Why do ski movies such so bad in comparison to snowboard movies?????

i have been asking myself this question for many years, ever since i saw movies like afterbang, true life, the resistance, and then again today after watching thats it thats all. im my opinion i really only like one ski movie this year, turbo. i thought everything else was wayyy to boring or slow. i just love how snowboard movies have such a sense of fun to them, i get so much more amped to go ski after watching a snowboard movie than a ski movie, anyone else fell this way too?

i think we need to see ski movies made similar to how snowboard movies are made, not copy how they do it, but put our own take on it, i would way rather watch that than watch pretty much every other ski movie that has ever come out

whats wrong wit ski movies? the level of skiing and the creativity that pollard, mahre, fujas are taking skiing in is way more excited to watch than any snowboard movie.

yea sure, snowboard movies are good, but it just seems like they have run out of "new" stuff to film.

skiiers are progressing so much faster than boarders!!!!

I definetly agree. Recently skiing has absolutely exploded. Ski movies are way better than snowboard movies, except for thats it thats all. That was a pretty god damn epic movie

skiing is not snowboard bro, there are lots of things that are different but still we look to do all the stuff snowboarders do because is more creative than oldschool skiing and we try to get the sport to another high creative level than snowboarding and as I can see todays movies are doing it.

Agreed, Thats it Thats all put any ski movie ever made to shame. But they had a $13 Million budget, a ski movie with that kind of budget would destroy all.

It's all a matter of opinion I guess. I loved Turbo as well but I still think of both snowboarding and ski movies as equals when it comes to getting me excited for the season.

Although I do agree that some snowboard movies (not all) have excellent flow, and they are always entertaining where as some ski movies (again not all of them) have points where the action isnt as engaging.

I don't want huge tricks, I want some good editing, good music and some unique / stylish moves.

because lots of skiers are concerned with "getting hyphy" and appearing super baller. Lots of snowboarders are concerned about having fun and being with their friends. Granted, there is some overlap on both sides, but that is what I believe is the main difference.

I agree. If I want to get stoked for skiing I'l watch Thanks Brain, Stack Footy, or Mtn Lab 1.5 over any ski movie. I like what guys like Scott Stevens are doing because its creative and fun and most of all cool looking. Im glad to see guys like Andy Parry and Will Wesson start to film more like this with Head for the Hills and now Traveling circus. They may not be throwing crazy double corks off massive jumps but IMO the little jib stuff that they do is way more fun to watch then Switch 10's in the backcountry. (although maybe not as fun to do).

I guess my opinon kinda dosen't count, casue anything that invovles snow makes me pop a half chub, but even watching a Warren Miller movie and seeing a guy like Billy Poole straight lining some hairy shit or seeing Mahre ride a couple thousand feet of steep vert switch makes me excited about the way skiing is heading. I thought CLAIM was a pretty decent movie, but That's it That's all does rock.

I always see threads like this and i couldn't disagree more. I think that the recent Poor Boyz, Pollard/Pep/Mahre movies and Level 1 are all consistantly better than Mack Dawg (same thing over and over) or other comparable flicks. I know I am somewhat biased because I am a skier but the editing and music is usually better too. I don't know why so many skiers are convinced that snowboarding is so much cooler. If you really think that you are more than welcome to buy a snowboard.

I agree.

I think that (not all) but more skiers are worried about looks, rather than fun.

And in snowboarding movies its all about friends, happy things and just fun times.

That isn't to say skiing doesn't have those things, just snowboarding movies show it more..

Its hard to explain...

Either way, I love skiing and would never switch to snowboarding just based on who has better movies.

It's true though. Right now skiing is progressing faster than snowboarding, at least with tricks. There aren't that many possibilities as far as new grabs and grinds on a snowboard. But with two planks, there is twice as much possibility. And as skiing progresses and becomes more popular, there will be more money in the industry which will lead to bigger budgets for ski movies which along with all the new stuff that's coming up will make skiing movies as good and better than snowboarding movies.

i think the tricks and stuff we are doing have far surpassed snowboarding in creativity and style besides thats it thats all from what i've heard (all ive heard is that everything is HUGE in that movie), just the budget for ski movies isn;t as high and we can't pay the $$ to get shots as sick as they do.

tricks ain't shit. Big mountain is where its at, snowboarders cannot come close to the level of big mountain rippers. The only big name snowboarder who rips big mountain is Jeremy Jones, and at that he is not near the level of Seth Morrison.

No. Seth gets too much credit. He is an incredible big mountain skier, but the stuff that jeremy jones rips is so much more technical than Seth. Seth can just huck. But I agree that in general skiers are better than boarders at big mountain.

i agree that snowboarding cant compare in the big mountain side, but personally i dont really like to watch big mountain stuff, i find it kind of boring to watch, personally i love to ski big mountain, but watching it is something totally different

and i think movies like reasons are why ski movies arent as good, it was pretty much the same set up as yeah dude, except with talking

the only ski movie i have seen that can compare ski wise is teddy bear crisis

I do both fairly good and always find that snowboarding is more fun but thats just my opinion and I feel snowboarding videos are also better because I feel switch ups are lame.

what has pollard progressed in the last 3 years of his skiing, I seriously don't get why people are so stoked on the whole nimbus thing
i personaly like real tricks, or if they are gonna be small rotations and stuff then add some style, not a saftey grab

here is my opinion,

Look at Forum or Against em and That's it That's All.

They both have a lot of fun lifestyle, you learn about the riders and it seems like you get a little background on them then see that it affects how they ride. Where as in Turbo you get straight riding to "ballin" song, for purists this format shows the technicality of skiing but lacks any personality really. Banger after Banger.

Reasons is getting there with some personality, but it still shows more of the Banger after Banger to a cool song deep underneath its story. I Ride Park City is also very sick, shows a lot of style to the shots and some fun jibs. Down with People and Double Decade, all these snowboard movies have personality and actually funny. Have you seen the credits to Down with People?

I'm not dissing ski movies at all, no hate, i love them, Head to the Hills is an insane film along with Get Lucky and Turbo. It's just more like oh my moments instead of actual wow that looks like a ton of fun moments.

And if someone already said this delete my post i didnt read above my own, noob move sorry.

I wouldn't necessarily say more experience. I mean look at how far back all of the Warren Miller films go, and other stuff like that.

As for more cash, i totally agree with you. You can see it in todays society how many more people know about snowboarding than skiing, or if they do know about skiing they don't know we can do just as many tricks as snowboarders. Even in the gaming world, there is no GOOD freestyle game, I mean sure they put it in SSX on tour, but thats a snowboarding game to begin with.

So, my main reasons are that snowboarding is "bigger", in terms of business wise, to larger companies. So much more money, making even more fans, making even more money. Thats what it all boils down to.

ahhhh picture this is probably the coolest movie ive ever seen. thats it thats all was pretty fucking sick too

Seth gets credit for being fuckig insane..and I don't think he can evr get enough credit for that. He also consistanly has big mountain segments that leave you saying WOW the whole time...no snowboard movie does that.

oh wow you hippys make me laugh. You guys can't understand that someone can have fun and be as stocked (if not more) as you AND love the sport? I like to dress well and look well on the hill and i fuckin love skiing it's my life and it might be a reason why i like to look nice while skiiing. So please guys just stop saying that people who dress well hate the sport and just go out there to look cool, fuck if they didnt like the sport would you think that they would go freeze their ass off in january? But I do agree that some people are posers and they just dress well and don't even ski they are just posers but that's a minority. /end rant

Yeah, but that means shit all if you lack talent. Seriously, money doesn't make a good film. It's ideas and perception of the editors and filmers along with creativity of the riders.

Robot Food didn't have a shitload of cash, but they had really visionary directors and editors along with some of the best and most talented riders on the crew.

Forum's Resistance and True Life were amazing flicks because they had the dream team back then, along with cool ideas for video parts and transitions from part to part. But that was pretty far back still. If you want to check out boarder films further back check out Whiskey Diaries, or TB10 (optigrab), they didn't have 'experience' as much back then but they made some really awesome films.

Check out Blank Paper Production's 'In Short:' one of my favorite flilm in recent years. They don't have a huge fan base but they do have the ability to make a unique and fresh movie.

I'm not saying that skiing doesn't have their fair share of awesome flicks. TBC, Idea, and even some of the earlier pbp films are all amazing. Boarding has just been around for long enough for the become an art more than just a yearly video recap.

This is making me super angry. I have searched thats it thats all and i still cant find it. Under everything.

The problem with ski films is definately not a lack of talent, innovation, or progression. The problem is that most or all ski film companies have a recipe for their movies now and they use the same recipe each year. Yes there are some new tricks and the skiing progresses but the presentation doesnt seem to. Ive seen Turbo which in my opinion was talked up a little too much on this site. I thought some of the park skiing was sick but it was the same format as all the other level 1 films and no new innovative filming or editing. I thought the sickest shots from last season were sammy's paragliding shots from joss, andreas' paragliding shots from the ACG sweetspots (also in reasons), Jossi's cable cam shots in 44 days, and some heli shots like the ones from Thats it thats all. I would like to see more stuff like that. I mean you dont have to go all out and spend the money like T.I.T.A did but I think the companies can afford to do some of that kind of stuff now that skiing has grown a lot. Snowboard videos do a good job of making epic scenes but at the same time having them be fun, exciting and more personal with the riders and thats what I want to see a little more with skiing as opposed to making everything "epic". Dont get me wrong I love a lot of the ski movies out now but I think with the talent, style, innovation, and personality in skiing today that they can showcase it much better. imo

Normally I would disagree with you and say that recently ski movies have been better than boarding movies. However today I watch Thats it Thats All for the first time and it was the most incredible movie I have ever seen. It was truly mind blowing, the nature heli shots, travis and jones ripping huge lines in AK with follow shots by a heli, everything about it was so awesome and huge.

Ok, I havn't watched any snowboard movies in the past couple of years but, as far as saying ski movies follow a basic plot year after year and that they lack personallity and fun I think is wrong. Take Hot Lunch for example. Even though its crazy short its definitley in my top 3 favorite ski movies of all time, up there with tbc and 1242. Mainly because when you watch it you see them just messing around on the hill, doing butters and front flips off what ever they can find and then just jacking around in mammoth, not trying to throw massive doubles or huck 12's. I loved that because it was refreshing to see a ski movie with tricks I can actually do or see myself doing. And because it reminds me of what most people are doing when they go into the park-just messing around with their friends. Head for the Hills is another great example of this, just people out filmin themselves having fun on skis. Yes some movies feal repetative but they still get you stoked for skiing every winter dont they?

I thought hot lunch was sick. Got me super stoked for skiing. It made skiing seem a lot more fun. I just think that as far as the other big name companies go I think they need to step up their filming and make a movie that is different than the rest and progress the filming as much as the skiing is progressing. Maybe its just a lack of funds... if so then they are probably doing the best they can with the funds they have.

Seth is sick. But it's mostly his cliff hucking that really wows people. Jeremy on the other hand is super tech. It is Seth's guts that get him noticed, and Jeremy's skill in ripping the craziest lines. Balls and skill are different. Not to say Seth doesn't have skill. He is still crazy good. Just not up to Jeremy's level.

what ski companies need to do, is give a camera to one of the other team memebers, and let them film whatever the hell they want, random shiit, having fun, while still having a dedicated *professional* filmer...

That way there would be Crazy sick, good shots, but also shots of a bunch of bros just shredding and fucking around...thats what a good movie would look like

tell the filmers to have fun too!

Also, Hot lunch is absolutely sick, and i loved it, probally my top 3 videos of all time...and Traveling Circus is way sick too!

For skiing we started off with warren miller and people shreding powder with their skis as close together as possible...for snowboarding they started off filming in the park. T

skiing had to progress...snowboarding started off with a modern mindset.
