Why can't skateboard movies be filmed like this?

you must of never actually seen any real skateboard movies because although rollerblading is sick (im not hating in any way) there are dozens of skateboard films out there that bleed way more creativity than this does.
 
yea..if u could do that on skis---OMFG that would be soooo chill--they should try switch-ups on that chain...ballin!!
 
I disagree! There is something between fun and silly filmmaking and serious, pointless philosophy and narration. While I love the fun style, I also dig the serious style SO much more. Not the gay narration shit, Im talking about ski porn still, but done in a good way, like the Picture This! teaser. Serious, no random philosophy thrown in to make it seem immaculate, and techno music! yaaay!!!

i like it and i dont really see much of a difference from that vid to some of the newer skate vids around

even bag of suck is pretty creative and its not that new
 
I agree as far as the filming style. it seems EVery skateboarding movie is all fisheye follows...i like seeing that long lense stuff
 
I dont mind fisheyes as long as they're creative, like the ones in that teaser.

and Bag of Suck was creative, but the filming wasn't at all. Im talking strictly filming here.
 
Skateboard filming is pretty lacking. There's like three shots without a fish eye and the rest are follow cams. I like watching skate videos but they get so fucking repetitive by how everything is presented.
 
fisheyes piss me off at least in skate videos because 75% of the shots in a skate vid are the same, i mean on the ground fisheye follow cam, its gets annoying as fuck, cant they get some creative angles at least i mean seriously
 
Dude that was pretty dope trailer. Really enjoyed the editing of it. Just for thought not trying to be hostile or anything, but if yall are so damn annoyed by the filming of videos why dont you make a video yourself. I know it wont be mainstream or whatever but work with angles and shit and see what looks cool instead of follow cams and fisheye lenses
 
Tankaskier, you and I should get together and start up some shit. I know it's not entirely realistic, but I dont think I've ever disagreed with anythinkg you've ever said about filmmaking. We're on the same page, and that trailer was sick. Stands out in my mind like the mack dawg does; unique and creative.
 
baker 3 is one of my favorite skate movies.

I don't know man, I think skate videos that are just an onslaught of clips are way more fun to watch than interviews and people walking up stairs. But, there's room for al the different styles for film making. It seems like people watch movies for differnt reasons. I watch skate movies for skateboarding, and the random shot of a hobo getting pissed on; Not for any sort of special ed limelapse experence or artsy bullshit. If that's what you're into great, I couldn't care less. Don't forget action sports cinema has roots, go watch future primative.

However if you're looking for docu-skate movies with pretty birds check out the transworld films.
 
well there is always the problem of us living really far apart...so I dont think its possible. At least you're able to enjoy the Hungry Sloth creations from afar.
 
Ty Evans is sick and all as far as skate filming goes, but I think hes sooo overrated. He has the cinematography skills of every 16mm ski filmer out there...why is he so special?

even with most of those shots, they didnt look that good. I've seen better colors out of a DVX and he was shooting an HVX! He also used weird skater techniques like zoomed after a trick or something....

in short, I think that was only reputable because it was shot with a nice camera. The actual filming was nothin special.

Just about any car commercial. Like the Mazda ones or the Nissan shift_2.0 ones I really like also. abstract filming.

anybody can hold a fisheye up to a rail or do a handheld dolly shot...I garuntee if he didn't shoot 60p that wouldn't look so hot.
 
depending on the mood Im in, I generally prefer the serious edits over the funny ones.

But I do agree with you, I hate the stereotypical skate filming. I would rather watch an hour of MSP slow motion than that shit.

the average 16mm filmer also has the skills in which the guys who filmed barely dead possess.

there isn't much of a difference between ty and the barely dead guys, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

one advantage of the barely dead guys is their tilting, which is definitely unique. i would say ty uses more realistic colors where as the barely dead guys exaggerate them a lot, both good techniques, but i think ty's are just as pleasing to the eye. and you say "skater techniques" ya...ty pretty much invented all of those techniques and expanded on them making them work better. the techniques actually emphasize some of the tricks a lot of the time which is definitely relevant to what is happening in the picture.
 
I liked this one, the interviews had some serious message and informative things that it got across. Like the downfall of skating from mainstream xtreme right guard, mtn dew, taco bell, travis pastrana, dbl mcwhoppercorked 1260 back flip, shaun white, dr. cashittymcwarbucks thing that skateboarding/fmx/bmx/snowboarding/skiing has gotten into.
