Why bigger skis?

its so crazy graphics can fit on them and make people seem cool..

Stop the fat ski movement.. just cause the next generation of americans are obese.. doesnt mean our skis need to be

they are fun in the powder, you feel like your skiing a groomer with 3 ft of snow underneath you....why should we get rid of them?? they add a new taste to our sport, why put out the fire?

Stability, speed, float, style in air. That doesn't mean you should get bigger skis than you need to just to look hard. The problem isn't what skis companies are making, that they're too fat or too stiff or two long. That's not the issue. The issue is dumb kids buying bigger skis than they need for no reason. Most people don't actually need to go past 182cm for any purpose, really. But if you ski deep stuff fairly frequently, or you weigh close to 200, you will.

personaly i like longer skis, more stable on big jumps and easier to land switch and theres not a big difference on rails. also with more kids center mounting they need a bigger ski. but half the kids today bought em cause evryone else is doin it

Werd... I'm 6'2 210 or so and 185ish is perfect for me for most things, maybe a bit longer and wider for pow. But if you're 5'8 on ANTs? Come on. It's unnecessary.

I understand all the benifits to it, and I personally only ski skis above 180cm...But I am 6"2'. But, it gets silly when short little 15 year olds have 185cm skis with a 100mm waist, who only hit park and on-piste.

That kind of attitude is pretty stupid... if you buy skis so you can brag about it to your friends and look "ballsy", I think you're a moron... but hey, to each his own. Buy what you want.

the camber in skis is made to support a certain weight, if you take a ski that is too long, you won't use the whole edge effectivly because you don't weight down the camber enough under your feet.

if u take a ski that is too short, the camber wont support u and there will be too mcuh weight right in the center of the ski and you won't be using the rest of the skis effevly cuz you will be sinking down the center of the ski.

most ski shops have charts for each ski company to know what length is right for you, its different for almost every single model of skis.

ya, skis are too fat, and too short with the exeption of the fat twins now, go to any ski shop and tell then that you ski at *fill in local mountain* and they will sell you a ski that doesnt come past your nose, probly a mid fat, carving ski. I like a longer ski cause they are faster (generalization, i know) but short skis still suck, theres no way around that for an all mountain ski. For spins, a shorter ski is great, less rotational inertia, ie easier to spin, fatter skis are better in powder, easier for landings, but are unnesecarry on groomers. I ski 168 scratches for park only, and 179 fujatives for the whole mountain and jumps. frankly, the fujatives are faster skis, even when both are freshly tuned and waxed, id rather ski a longer ski on the mountain, its just faster..

So, I am looking at a pair of 182 foils for myself, a 5'11" 155 lb agressive skier...too long? that was my thought, but I had people on this site say they were perfect. Hook me some feedback

Cheers

Its not just an image. If i saw some dude ripping with ANTs and he was like 5'8 5'9 i would give him props, but if he was gettin his ass kicked down the hill by them, and then its "unnecessary".

There are exceptions to every rule... a little guy in whistler who rips and wants to buy 190 Gotamas, and can handle them, is one thing. But that's not what we're really talking about. It's more the little kids buying them to LOOK like they're the exception. And anyway, I'm not even ranting against that really... I think it's dumb, but people can buy whatever they want. What I was saying was, people who say "Ski companies are making their stuff too big and fat" are kind of missing the point... they're making what people will buy. The problem, if there is one, isn't with the company's design and production; there are in fact people who need a pair of ANTs. It's the consumer.

SO what'll it be, I have been skiing all my life and would think that i would be able to handle long skis but the longest I have skied on is 169, for a 5'11" 155 lb guy, using these skis for all mountain, and booters (I have park skis) ARE 182 FOILS TOO LONG?

I complety agree with everything you said, people buying skis to look "cool" is so fucking stupid, buy skis that are what you need, not what makes you look cool.

Hugo Harrison is 5'6/7 and he rides 195.

it all depends what you are skiing. if you ski what the ANT are made to do, anyone should ride it.

Johnny law is 5'9 maybe at the most and he rides 194. dynastar send him 186 for jump skis but he doesnt use them because they are too short

I made an exception for you Brian don't worry,

"There are exceptions to every rule... a little guy in whistler who rips and wants to buy 190 Gotamas, and can handle them, is one thing. But that's not what we're really talking about."

haha oh shit i didnt finnsih reading the thread. whoops. and hey im downgrading to the 183. i want 190 but i would hate to throw those through trees

The 182 is plenty of ski anyway... are you going to get them at mad dogs? 52% off?

190? but ur a tiny little man.... oh well i guess if u can handle em go for it. 183 might be a better idea, and it's good that ur getting those, but that's just my opinion.

longer skis help you go faster and get more edge.... and when you spin the longer skis help pull you through your spin more

long wide skis are better than short skinny skis in every category. faster, more stable, cooler looking, basically everything that matters. i have made'ns and i ride them most of the time, park, all mountain, whatever. and yesterday i swapped my buddy for his ar5's for the day. let me tell you, they sucked compared to my big sticks. shittier riding switch, shittier in the air, shittier on rails, just generally shittier.
