Why are people so ignorant about skis?

My friend who isn't the greatest skier just came into the shop I "work" at and asked me to mount up a pair of Liberty Genomes for him. In case you don't know, the Liberty Genome has a 141 underfoot. He said he wanted to use them as his only pair of skis for the year. I feel bad for laughing at him, but he pretends to do research about it, and then he just buys the first pair of cool top sheets he sees. He did the same thing for a bike last summer, and bought a 2017 Norco Aurum (a downhill bike) that he wanted to use for trail and town riding. And just a few weeks ago, he came into my shop and tried to convince me that Surface Outsiders are park skis.

Of course I mounted the skis for him, and of course I didn't charge him for it, but he should really put some effort into not wasting his money.

I would like to try an entire season on the genomes too. Hopefully you did not kill the stoke this sounds awesome

I tried to not put him down too much but this is a guy that pretty much only rides groomers and the occasional black. He will probably still have fun because he won't know he is suffering. I just feel bad because his old skis were 2016 Line Tiger snakes, and that will be a big change to get used to.

where is this? dude should just change his life to go with the genomes and chase storms from now on

Whitefish Montana. we get some sick powder but not enough to justify 141mm...

Yeah he should embrace #skivanlife and chase powder all year long

I mean, those are some pretty dope top sheets. It looks like they are camber underfoot, traditional sidecut with tip and tail rocker so as long as they are not noodles he should be able to get by. I rock my CRJs with 118 underfoot on any day the snow is soft and can throw them around the trees and sketchy rocks etc pretty well. They dont do groomers though but its more the softness than the width.

He screwed up far more with the bike IMO. You can throw around fat pow skis and be ok but lugging around a DH rig just sucks.

While not the worst ski you could use in the park, you are just plain wrong if you think the Outsiders are a "park ski". Definitely a fun ski though, almost bought a pair a few weeks ago.

Why do they make skis which are 141? Unless you're a heli-guide and ski nothing but bottomless powder, I can't imagine those skis working for anyone.

Yeah, my shop has like 5 skis over 125mm underfoot and we might sell 1 a year to someone who actually needs that width.

I’m not even sure I could name 5 skis over 125... moment chipotle banana, moment ghost train, armada Magic j, liberty genome... what am I missing?

Armada Bubba and ARG, Volkl Chopstick

As long as your guy is having fun who cares how wide his skis are?

Most people are ignorant about skis because they don't really care, they don't geek out on equipped like we do. Same people that drive appliance cars and boring beige-mobile crossovers.

Because skiing something too wide on a groomer, and 141 is ridiculous as an all mountain, puts an incredible strain on your knee joints.

Lmfao I totally forgot about the Spatula I’m an idiot. I consider myself pretty well versed in skiing history I was trying to think of more modern skis since the guy was saying his shop currently stocks skis more than 125

Have fun "ripping the groomers" on your carving skis my dude, i'll have plenty of fun skiing my noctas (122mm) daily and whip out my 110 waist for low tide days.

It shouldn't matter to you what that dude wants to ski.

fr tho, how are you gonna say outsiders are too fat when [tag=224147]@Young_patty[/tag] skis deathwishes in park totally fine

I mean I've skied skis as wide as 116 on groomers and actually really enjoyed them

yeah adding onto the fat daily driver group, I currently have Kartel 116s and before that I rode a pair of 2014 LINE Mangum Opus's daily (124 underfoot) everyday. That man is going to have a hoot rolling around with those thicc skis.

Haha 124 underfoot? I'd never go above 120 for something that isn't purely for pow

In retrospect, did it work well?

Probably for people who are fat as fuck like me lol idk

Honestly tho if I skied a ton and had the money I'd be down to buy some ultrafat skis for the hell of it

I love interesting/unique products

Yeah the skis were actually super playful, I got them used so they were a bit on the shorter side for my height imo (178cm skis and I'm 183cm tall) so that probably helped with things. The magnum opus's had a really nice rocker profile, so it was pretty easy to kick out and pivot when you wanted to do tighter turns in the trees and I felt like the edges held well on groomers. Also the ski was pretty light, like I learned how to do blind 270s off on them haha

That's cool. My Outsiders aren't unmanageably wide but in comparison to your average twintip they are heavy as fuck. Jack Finn can deal with it tho so idk, hopefully it won't give me problems in the coming months.

To be fair you can ski park on any ski if you try hard enough. I’ve hit rails on Donner parties too, it’s not ideal but kinda fun at the same time

Spatulas aren’t actually that wide, I think they were only 115 underfoot.

pontoons and pon2oons are just over 130.

My hill is fully moguled up, even in the trees. I couldn't don't think steering those big boys around in anything less than 6" would be too enjoyable. I also ski with my feet real close together so I constantly chew up the tips of my skis with my lead change on my regular skis. I'd saw notches in the tips of my big skis if I used them on the daily.

Thats still not that wide, people thought they were crazy wide at the time but now thats a pretty normal pow ski width. Theres a huge difference between 140 underfoot monsters and 125.
