Why are movies so expensive?

All ski/bike/unicycle/snowboard/skateboard/etc. movies all so goddamn expensive? anyone got an explanation?

little guys pay more for smaller quantities, plus they sell less and need to survive and keep the business alive.

Hollywood movies make an absolutely rediculous amount of money in the theaters. True, these movies cost more to make than ski movies, but they have a far larger profit. Since ski movies make money only from the DVD/video sales, the prices have to be significantly higher.

classic law of supply and demand; they're expensive because we continue to buy them at the current price, so they continue to make and sell them at that price.

i dont think thats the reason^. its more because it costs them a ton of money to travel around the world filming shot and renting helicopters and stuff so they need to earn money somehow.

dude theyre not getting rich off these movies.

16 mm, travel, and paying athletes, and then selling the movies to a pretty small group of people, does not equal huge profit.

oh yeah? well me and my friends have been bathing off the southern coast of st. bards, chilling with spider monkeys. tripping on acid gave us a whole new perspective on shit.

also, they don't have a ton of people that go out and buy the movies, with hollywood dvd's they have a shitload of people that will go out and buy them, but with ski movies, only a few kids will get them

tru dat^. a lot of people have made good points

And get this, on the news the other day they did a big story about old people dropping dead from heat exhaustion. They urged my community to donate fans to keep them alive!! the deman is small there for the price is higher. here is a diagram....

demandcurve.gif'

this shows that the less quantity demaned the higher the price will be.

as mentioned it takes these guys like a year to make these movies all over the world travel, helicopters etc, they would go broke otherwise - like i think less than 1% of the world could name the title of a ski/board/skate movie.

So they gotta jack the prices...and we still gonna pay it

i dont think they pay the skiers. the skiers sponsors pay the skiers when their logos are in there

the dvd's they burn them on alone cost 10-20 bucks or something plus they still have to cover costs cause 16mm is damn expensive

ya it costs alot to make the movies and they have a smaller niche to sell them to, so the price is higher. i think its worth it, i would die inthe summer if i didnt have my trusty ski movies

i dont no if anyone said this cuz im too lazy to read all the rest but i think along with all the other reasons about paying athletes, travel etc... is the fact that these guys risk it everyday they film to make these movies. if i was doing the stuff they were, i would for sure like to get something out of it.

I think some of/most of the film production costs would be covered by those 15 different sponsor logos that show up at the beginning and end and middle of every ski movie you see.

They don't just put those logos there for nothing.

These companies pay for this.

the athletes don't get paid I am pretty sure. It is like magazine picture, the skiers don't get paid by the magazine for shots, the sponsors pay the athleets for the number and size of pictures in mags.

It's funny a guy from 2 plank would put that. Did you even watch the movie you made before you put it out? It's terrible. Just because mommy and daddy are rich, doesn't mean you should make a movie.

^ haha the only reason I said that was to find a good way to call this thread starter a post whore.

No. absolutely not. Not even REMOTELY the case.

Shooting a ski, bike, snow/wake/surf or whatever action sport movie is ludicrous. It's expensive, hard work, and requires more dedication to the cause than pretty much any kind of filmmaking I've come across. The budgets are low(even for the biggest companies, especially when compared to "legitimized" hollywood filmmaking), the time constraints are ridiculous, the locations are mind-numbingly difficult to find, access, and shoot at, scheduling it is a bitch, travel and film expenses are stupid, and on top of it all, you have to depend on weather to provide you with decent enough conditions to shoot.

Add to that the fact that you just don't sell that many copies, and that sponsors don't necessarily cover all your costs, that you don't generate any kind of revenue from theatre showings like Hollywood does, the cost of music or the lawsuit/editing changes you're likely to have to deal with if you don't pay for it, and the fact that at the end of the day, movie makers might enjoy dinner and a beer, and you have a recipe for high movie prices.

So the next time you're sitting on your ass watching a movie, think about what goes on behind the scenes during the making of that movie, and then maybe you'll stop bitching about how expensive it is. Greed? Only if you define "greed" as "unwillingness to forgo eating, and other basic needs".

Bahahaha... or, you could call it the 'elitist snob' cult. Anyways, my family already owns a country club, so no thanks.

From my days of eco I don't think that is how the law of supply and demand works...

Haha, you guys have no idea of the price comparison between ski movies and the movies you find in a video store. Let's just say if ski movies where as expensive as regular movies, you would have spent enough money for a new pair of high-end skis after your 5th ski movie.
