Why all ski magazines suck

Hey, I think that in the ski industry, we need better magazines with more interesting contain about what we really want to see : I mean SKIING.

First, look at Freeze Magazine. When my new issue comes out, it takes about 4 minutes of my time then I leave it on the table and I say in head that I will 'Read the interesting articles later'. After these 4 minutes, I've seen all the pictures that we already have seen in a movie or in the previous issue. I've taken a look at the one or two good and new sequence that are sick and then it's over...I have to wait another months to see about some new pictures and maybe one new sequence (if the editor is on fire). I am only talking about freeze because it's the only magazine I have subscribed but when I look around the other mags like Freeskier or Skier, it's the same.

Second, the contain in each issue is soooooo boring. There any at least contain...Maybe the Editor's Note that goes anywhere, when you've finished reading it you ask yourself : what did I just read? or that Brad Holmes shit that is so stupid... This guy is seriously the most moron guy that doesn't make our sport progress at all...or in a good way. There are some articles that are good like the profiles on Hall Belanger or Pollard because it's what we want to hear...What the pros think about what and shit like that... Trips are also not that bad when it's nice backcountry KICKER not powder because maybe powder riding is technical but it's so boring to see...It's nice when you read commentaries about how was a backcountry trip like : we went to that kicker at 5 am to be the first people there and then we sessionned it we saw big 7s and things like that.

What I want to say is no more Holmes shit, more interesting editors note (at least if you have nothing to say, keep it better for the next issue!), to continue profiles on skiers, profiles on parks (not on mountains!) new gear for next year and all the new articles that comes out...How to wax skis....which skis are better for street or skis that are for skiers that needs stability...

Finally, my opinions is clear : more NEW pictures, more NEW sequences (just tell the companies to do better publicities! Oakley are nice but when you see a SEQUENCE with the product in the front it's more interesting and more selling!) Better articles! no more things that makes everybody reading it so bored!

fuck freeze..... there needs to be more content... i like the idea of transworld. even though its 2/3rds ads, they have like 3 feature articles that are really big.... a huge new, innovative photo section and a spotlight on a pro with a (usually) 6 page interview.... as well as up and comers, and newsworthy/trick tips etc.

Powder is where it's at for content; mostly I open Freeze to look at the pictures. Things used to be better when Jacquet was in charge. I think given time and expansion of the sport, either the existing magazines will grow with the movement, or new media (like, Axis, or hell, Newschoolers) will emerge to provide what's needed.

the reason transworld is 2/3s ads is because the skateboard industry is MUCH larger than the ski industry... there are more people participating in the sport, which means there are more companies to feed all the kids, which mean more ads in the mags, which means the mag can afford to produce more editorial content and it can be filled with more photos too. Because instead of having 3 or four main photographers, like a ski magazine, there are literaly dozens and dozens of skate photogs out there tring to make a living... not only does that mean more photos in general, but the increased competition for placement in the magazine creates BETTER images too.

Take a look at a new freeze vs. one from a few years ago. MUCH IMPROVED, and with a couple more seasons.. who knows, you might have your 300 page mag.

dude freeze does suck ass, Transwold snowboarding magazeens are like a inch thick and every page is a sequnce or dope picture, even the adds are intresting. Honastly it takes me about 3 mintues to read a ski magazeen and im completly bored with it but i can look at a snowboard mag for hours and its 100x more intresting and i dont even snowboard

 
Like Jibtech said there just needs to be more people in the industry, Photographers and riders, thats the only way the magazines will get better. Buy i personally think that those transworld magazines get boring after a day or two.

^I agree man, Freeze is sweet and I will take anything I can get. It's not as thick as transworkld but that's for reasons everyone else has already said. It's unfortunate but if you want to read more you'll just have to get several different magazines, between Freeze, Freeskier, Powder, Axis, Skier etc. I've got plenty to read.

and that euro magazine (can't remmember the name) is really good. and theres definitly more content than freeze.

sbc skier is good but its hard to read cuz teh articles are small print and they are really long. lots of teh pics are at my hill and a pro from my hill is a regular in teh ski mag. moss patterson

id put freeskier on the top of my list, i feel that freeze has slipped a little since they moved to transworld, but just my opinion. and Levin is right, once skiing reaches a markatibility level of skateboarding/snowboarding, then you will see a thicker mag with alot more content, since there will be more money around

Damn dude for some one ripping on ski mags so much you sure are a shitty writer. I'm hoping you are from Canada or something because I've never seen such bad grammar. Haha it was funny just trying to figure out what you were trying to say. But anyway I do agree that ski mags are lacking. I bought and issue of Freeskier of the shelf the other day because I'm not suscribed. But it literally took me all of about 15 minutes to read everything in the magazine. There is just no content what so ever. Axis is the same way. That last issue hardly had any text. I think they have the best photography and the best ideas they just need to elaborate on them. Freeze blows because it's written for 13 year olds. I like Powder just because they actually have some lengthy articles but it's too Outside magazine style lately. That canadian mag is packed with stuff but it's written by a bunch of monkeys apparently. I could write better than those guys. And who wants to only read about Canucks doing stuff in Canada. Yeah I love Canada and go there 2 or 3 times a year but you have go to branch out.

all i can say to this thread that's relevant, is the last freeze magazine i read had an article on how to cook pasta with pep fujas....what kind of a fucking idiot thought that cooking would be a nice addition to a magazine about skiing?? I paid money for Freeze, not House and fucking Home.

It's hard to believe there's only, Nate Abbot, Flip Mcririck, Jason levinthal,Jeff Winterton, and Chris O connel taking pictures... I think it has something to do with a little then which shot is better... sponsors have to play some kinda roll. And Freeze is getting better but seriously need some changes.

axis has the best photos even if they are all taken by matt lev. personally it's my fav ski mag but it's real short, real short. freeze sucks because they only publish a few photographers every issue, at least freeskier is more willing to even look at unknown people's shit.
