probably some classical guitarist. i have this album of a guy playing solo guitar arrangments of paganini's caprices... its pretty crazy. if you dont know, paganini is widley regarded as the craziest violin composer ever. he also compsed some sonatas for guitar.

Nick Drake's guitar work was super tech, it hurts to listen to it sometimes, just knowing what went into playing what you're hearing. Steve Howe from 'Yes' the guy is a genious, if you ever get ahold of some of his music and just glance over it, it blows your mind, that is if you can read music. His usage of 40+ different chords in many of his songs, confusing ass progressions on top of some crazy finger picking... They're both mainly acoustic, definately on top of the list though.

i went to a bright eyes show and this guy he played with called m. ward was just incredible, it was amazing

i also saw the band yes a week ago or so and their guitar player, i think its steve howe or something, is amazing

ok you guys are definately all forgetting ERIC JOHNSON. he is so hardcore. all of his songs are perfect guitar. ridiculous. umm.. yngmie malmsteen... if you've never heard malmsteen i suggest downloading it RIGHT AWAY. it's electric. he plays so fucking fast. i really suggest getting some eric johnson and yngwie if you haven't heard them.

yeah, there is a reason why malmsteen isnt on my list.

He's not as electrifying as hendrix or townshend, he doesnt have the innovation of paige, the smooth of BB, etc. Yes he is an incredibly fast guitarist, but that was not the categorie. Garcia was not a technical guitarist, yet he is considered to be in the top 10 best guitarists. Why? Natural timing, smooth style. Its actually a flawed question in itself, there are different types of guitar, maybe for technical malmsteen would make my top 5.
