Who's hiked in Zion and Bryce Canyons? Help a Huck out.

There is a hike that I have only seen in photos. It's a slot canyon with water in it and you hike for about 8 miles wading. I know there is a hike called the narrows in Zion, but a friend told me there was one in Bryce Canyon.

My friend may have been talking about the narrows, but that is described as a two day hike of like 16 miles. I am looking for something cool that I could hike through with kids and their grandparents and make it through in a day. My parents are tough and can handle it.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Not sure about Bryce but for sure check out Angles Landing in Zion, outstanding views and somewhat of a height-rush in some spots! Only takes like 2 or 3 hours !

Ive spent a lot of time at bryce and what you are describing doesnt really ring a bell. there is a ton to to around bryce, but no real water slot canyon type hikes. some spots in the narrows would be good for kids and grandparents and all that stuff, but it really depends on the time of the year with the water levels in the canyon

Thanks for the info. We are planning on hitting it up sometime this summer. So can you just do part of the narrows, and what are some other good slot canyons to hike while we are there?

could definately be hidden canyon at zion. It is a slot and has a very shallow stream running through it. The one thing about that is that it is not deep enough to wade through (at least when ive been). It was an extremely fun hike though, however I would be careful with kids on angels/hidden canyon. there is also another hike called observation point (pretty sure its the longest in zion) where you have to cross/wade through a stream a couple of times to continue on the path. Maybe that is what youre talking about, but I wouldnt recommend it because it is extremely long, strenuous, and pretty boring for most of the hike.

Maybe the Subway? Which is also down in Zion. The Narrows you can hike as either the full 16 mile (from the top down into Zion NP) but its an overnight trip. Or you can make it a day trip and just hike up from the bottom as long as you want. It splits a couple miles up and you have an option to explore another, smaller canyon to the right. I would plan on doing it in the summer instead of fall/spring so the sun stays in the canyon longer; it can get crazy chilly once the shade hits.

In Goblin Valley State Park there are quite a few. Bluejohn Canyon, the one where Aron Ralston cut off his arm, is there and it's awesome. The rap at the end is so fun. It's a great slot to drop. There are a ton of others around there, too. The Robbers Roost area has an awesome campsite and a bunch of slots around it. White Roost, Mindbender, Not Mindbender, the Spurs- check them out! Google Climb-Utah and check out that site.

i am pretty sure you can cheat at getting to observation point by driving up to that zion ponderosa ranch place and coming through the back. im pretty sure thats what i did, drove a long ways then hiked a half mile or so in. i could be wrong though, could be some other point down there.

I actually think that youre right, I did see another trail going off to the backside. I really wouldnt recommend that hike though because angels is just as good of a view but the hike for observation doesnt even compare, its really pretty boring

Thanks again for all the info. I am going to keep checking this. My friend described something that was similar to the narrows, but half the length. I went to climb-utah.com (which is awesome by the way), and so far haven't found anything like that. Definitely nothing in Bryce. I'll keep checking it out. I'd like to ditch the family and do some serious canyoneering. :-)

The narrows are probably going to pretty high right now. Any river is going to high right now. I would give the narrows a week or two at least. I just got back from San Rafael and both upper and lower black box canyon we're running too high to attempt.

Thx. We are for sure waiting until summer. My kids don't get out of school until end of May. Might even wait until mid summer.

im real interested in getting down to southern utah within the next few weeks, any suggestions on where to go? i've heard goblin valley is great.

any good websites that show all the hikes too?

Goblin valley will be great right now, check out a place called little wildhorse canyon, its really close to there and its pretty awesome. that whole area has a ton of stuff going on. not sure of any websites, but if you google little wildhorse a bunch of things should pop up

Moab/Zions and lower elevation stuff go spring and fall, its already in the 90s down there and gets super hot. Bryce is a lot higher and colder so you can go mid summer if you want. it has snowed on me down there in may and september before so its definitely a lot different from the other places

Goblin Valley is great for some day time shenanigans, but it's not a place I would spend more than a day at. Hit up the San Rafael Swell if don't want to deal with permits or restrictions. Hit up Capitol Reef and Escalante for the best all around arches, slots, gulches, and canyons. Those are just some places that are typical bad ass desert terrain. South/Central Utah also has a ton of legit mountain ranges. All together it is simply too much shit to see.
