Who's doing a season in France?

Alright chaps

So I'm new on here...working my fist season this winter. Just left school and now on my gap year so im pretty stoked!

Just wondering if any of you will be joining me in the Alps this winter? If so, what u working as?

agreed, even if your from the UK and france is close and quite cheap you'd still go to Whistler or somewhere to do a season and work.

Haha should have seen that coming...but you gotta love the french and their euro pop.

Has anyone here actually been skiing in europe.....?

my bro, rastafarider, has just done a season in val, my advice would be go to a big resort, if your serious about skiing then espace killy, verbier, portes du soliel or if you just want to be on it all season then the three valleys, skiing not great there.

BUT WHATEVER YOU DO DONT WORK AS A CHALET GIRL, COMPLETE WASTE OS A SEASON AS YOU HARDLY GET TO SKI, IF ITS A POW DAY THEN YO YOU WONT BE OUT TILL 1030 MAX.

GO IN NOVEMBER AND GET A JOB IN A BAR, BEING A GIRL AND IF YOU ARE HALF GOODLOOKING THEN YOU WILL DEF GET A JOB,

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO AND I CAN GIVE YOU SOME SUGGESTIONS OF WHERE TO WORK?

I'm going to Avoriaz for my second season, I don't know if I will be working though. I didn't work last season, just worked my ass off in the summer season, and living off that money in the winter - that's great because you can ski whenever you want!

Cheers for that...yeh i was thinking along the lines of val or meribel (it may be the 3 valleys but skiings pretty decent there? if not then i'll just have to be on it!!)

Haha well i WAS thinkin of waitressing/ chalet girl work but u may have changed my mind....

where u been in portes du soliel? I was in avoriaz in april...it kills it but could be hard gettin bar work there

So u just skied all day every day for an entire season?! thats awesome....but i definitely cant afford to do that

Avoriaz is cracking place though...did u ever try finding work there?

go to Italy nice people quieter slopes and awesome food, if not you should go for a day or two you will se the difference, when i was in Italy last month i skid into France hahah what a change was quite funny. the resort i was onthe border so it ran right down the middle of the resort. im hoping to do a season in j-pan but if not it looks like it might me Europe.

Val D, Tignes, Meribel, Morzine. All great places and easy to get work as they're very touristy. Morzine over Avoriaz cos its a bigger town not a purpose built resort and they're literally two lifts away from each other.

never been to portes du soleil, but they have a sick park there and a big area cruise on. off piste kills it as well

Youll find that the same sort of people will be doing seasons in val and meribel, public school kids. the ones who go to ski generally go to val and the ones who dont go to meribel. Nothing wrong with public school kids, i was one of them. If you are not into that then portes du soleil is more up your street.

waitressing is alright, as long as it is a restaurant, you just dont want to work for the chalet companies, they pay shit and when you apply you dont choose your resort, they choose for you.

the main advantage of working in bars is you meet and become friends with the big guns in there resort, the managers, they are the guys you want to be mixing with, not the twats in the chalets

if i was you then i would choose from val, verbier, st anton, portes du soleil and laax

rant over

No I didn't try to find a job, but I don't think it's that difficult to find work - all the people I know who tried to find a job got one, and none of them spoke french. They worked in ski-shops, bars and cleaning hotelrooms.

ha i m from bloody switzerland.. and the chalet girl thing..unless u arent chinese or japenese and u wanna work for a few dollars a day good luck

she ll hardly get a job as a chalet girl since most of the ppl who live their bring their own ppl and IF they need some1 they get payed shitty..most of the employes are asian.no offense

I've never done a season in the Alps, but a lot of my friends have and most have had a wicked time, even working for Travel operators as Chalet bitches/reps/hosts/dishwashers etc. You don't get that much cash, but you do have a wicked time.

Exactly. as long as i'm there with sun snow and... skier guys, im happy ;)

would rather be a chalet bitch than a rep...18 hour transfer day- no thank you!

u maybe gona do a season soon?

I've just finished a season in Colorado and am heading for NZ tomorrow! So yeah.

Probably be in CO again next winter, but maybe in Verbier.

For help on seasons in Europe check out www.natives.co.uk, lots of good info and helpful forums.

im not saying you wont have fun, but in my view you will have alot more fun if you work in a bar or ski shop

if you are serious about skiing then you will get alot more time if you do bar work or a ski tech.

I would say that if you went out in november and looked for a job then being a good looking chick then you have 95% chance of finding a job, provided you dont have a shit attitude, most of the decent bars only employ blokes if they have got contacts with the place

your choice but it's a decision you definately want to get right. look at www.natives.com

Oh yeah: If you come to Avoriaz you don't have to be there in november to get a job, most of us arrived in the middle of december and some even came in january and still got jobs!

Probably ski instructing a bit and then working in a ski shop/bar in the evenings. The ideal will be if I get a ski instructing job at the weekends so I get a free pass, then work in a shop in the evenings the rest of the week and get 5 days to ski. A bit doubtful though! Probably will ski instruct more than I want to.

Man, for a first year seasonaire it is so much easier to go out with a TO and be a chalet host with all your travel, accomodation and food sorted, than risk not getting accomodation etc and be a bargirl. Really, once you get the job sorted you get quite a lot of ski time. It would take serious balls to head out to a resort on your own without a job as an 18 year old. Not saying it's not fully doable for some people, just that it's a bit tougher than it has to be.

yeah the truth is that it is a hell of alot easier to go with the TO's but in my view, you would have a more productive season if you worked in bars or ski shops as you normally do one shift a day either nights or lunches, so every other day you get a full days skiing.

Accomadation wise, i only really know about val, if you speak to the right guy then you can def get accom, my bro did the bar thing last season in val and the accom was never full.

another advantage of the bar/shop way is you meet a more diverse range of people as the chalet guys spend all their time with the people they work with

i suppose the choice depends on where your priorities lie,

If you want info on val then email me on oliver.carr@newcastle.ac.uk

i will give you a list of places to ring and see if they will employ you and i can give you the accomadation guy if you want + any other questions you might have
