Who would buy a book on ski media production?

I'm thinking about writing a book for all of those people that are starting up their own 'production companys' and stuff, and for people wanting to get into the videography/photography area for skiing.

It'll have detailed tips on properly exposing snow scenes with video cameras and still cameras, tricks of the trade (extending battery life etc), and what stuff you'll need to have, how to go about doing stuff.

It'll be very detailed, containing some of the techniques that professional photographers and videographers use.

All that kinda junk, who would spend $5 on this?

Make it generic snow sports, it will garner more attention. But it could, and will be published, whether you write it or not.

for sure, ive kinda just had to teach myself but learning how to do things properly would be sweet, i would buy it, thats such a good idea

It will sell really well if you include a picture section, preferably with naked women in the photos...just a thought....

good idea... kind of sad in my mind... but good none the less. doesn't seem like the area that should have a deatiled guide book to me.

i'd buy that shit. but its too general, why would i buy a book on both photography and video shit. you also have to realize that you'd have to decide to what level of professionalism you want the book to be. photography stuff is ridiculously expensive, i was in a camera shop today and my tripod legs (not very good ones) are going to be 200 bucks, the head piece is going to be 150 (also not good). so i'm saying most people aren't going to be that into it. i dunno i'd buy it, but i'm not most people. good luck. tell me how much it costs and i'll order one. and that kid who said it should be on snow photography/video - he's right. that way you can sell it in mountaineering shops, snowboarding shops, lame ass snow shoe rental places, etc.

hey man, I would definetely buy that from you. If you need any help at all with it, email me @ laxcskier@yahoo.com. I could write about the business aspect of it, like keeping a professional stance, web advertising, advertising, etc. Let me know what you think.

Seems like something that would be a good reference to have. If your able to do it and keep the price low (like around 5 bucks like you said), I think that you could sell a good deal of them. So, to answer your question, yes.

-Jason

i'd buy it for reference....like it would have to be extremely detailed...like how to shoot this kinda shot...how not to put urself in this situation...yeah...i'd definetly buy it for pointers..

for sure i would buy it its only 5 bucks. there are so many kids out there making half ass footy that want to know this stuff.

BigNastee, it'll definetly showcase that.

Also will include which kind of lenses/film/bodies you'll want to be looking into for it. I'll probably make a photography one first, for like $4, then a videography one for $4, and if you buy both you can get 'em for $6. They'll probably be like 10 8x10 pages EACH unless I get it done somewhere on 5x7 or something in which they'll be thicker.

I'm on the 5th page and still in the 'buyer's guide' type thing. And the part about explaining how snow reflects light and effects your photos will probably take a while.

^^ Huh? I think you're talking about it having eye candy. But what I can say is that when I get around to making the cover for the book, it's gonna be siiiiick.

If it's well made and is really detailed I would buy it for sure

Freeskiing is a lifestyle, and true skiers are the ones who live this lifestyle, not the ones who follow it.

^^ Thanks dude.

And yeah, I made the cover page yesterday, I was gonna go 'all-out' and make it look super cool, but decided to take it back to the basics with a black & white ski photo in the background, and the title (semi-humorous) in the foreground at the bottom, looks pretty cool IMO.

I think it's a great idea, but I'd do it as a web site. Have it online for free or set up a $5 paypal donation to see the site. Instead of waiting for everything to be done, just divide everything into articles and post them up seperately. More people coud see it and benefit from it. Because for $5 a book, you're probably not in it for the money anyways, just do it as a service.

Ask PBP or Plehouse or whoever to write short guest articles, or maybe have a Q&A with them. Maybe viewers could submit their own questions for them to answer. Involving snowboard companies is a good thing, too

A link page to FCP forums or 16mm / digital video forums or whatever else would help newbies, too.

I dunno, I'm thinking as I'm typing, I'm sure there's a lot more cool things to do. But if you stick to a book, a downloadable book in PDF format is a cheap alternative to a printout..

I want to make it a small booklet, like randall suggested, because it's convenient for reading at school or on the ride to the ski hill or something.

And also... if I made .psd files, people could just share it all over the world and that'd defeat the whole purpose of me trying to make some money to buy a new camera so I can expand my knowledge even more and write an even more advanced version.

Thanks for your support guys, I'll keep you updated.

Great idea Steve, but I agree with the guy who suggested a website instead - I think that would be far more effective. Kind of like a Shumways or DigitalSkate for skiing/snowboarding, with articles on equipment, techniques (both capture and editing), and a good message board system - that would rule. I only know one ski/snowboard photography/cinematography site, but I can't remember its name and it was actually pretty poor.

Or maybe you could do the booklet too if you really wanted. Seriously dude, I can see you have a goal for a booklet type thing, but a website would reach so many more people and you could update it all the time.

I hope you arent intending on making much money from this (im not saying you shouldnt do it though).

when i read the title of this post i thought- no fucking way. after reading the post, it soudned cool. yes, i would buy one if it had an ear catching title.

bigsky_gurl, I'm going to try to get a sponsor for getting it printed, so I'll get the printing paid for and they'll get a full page ad in the back of the book or something.

And yeah, I would like to make money on this, because I'm BROKE and people owe me money and I'd reaaallly like a new camera.
