I don't know much about economics eh? I'm a fucking econ major buddy. and yes world war 2 did essentially end the great depression. that was a different situation in that world war 2 created virtually 100% employment. this war didn't do shit to the unemployment level. and we don't spend 90 billion on military each year, we spend over 300 billion (358.2 billion just for the dept. of defense in 2003, to be exact). and it's not 10 bil more, it's 100 million on top of what we normally spend, bud. peace

The man is a moron, unemployment has drastically risen since he came into power, he lowered taxes but increase spending...creating a huge deficit. About the war did anyone notice that the reason for the war went from weapons of mass destruction to liberating a country...how stupid are you to buy that bullshit from the man. They havent found anything yet but they are trying to spin it as if we are the great saviors of the middle east. All we really did was create the next generation of terrorists by killing their families with our 'smart' bombs. I have friends over there fighting...and the sad thing is non of them wanted to go they realized it was a bullshit job. But they cant say no I wont go, they joined up so now they have to do what some pansy who kept his ass safely out of a war when he was his age by using his dad's money and influence. I pray nightly that this guy doesnt get reelected. He is slowly but surely destroying what america stands for. He tells people that they are unpatriotic for not support his decision to attack iraq, he rounds up innocent people because of their ethnicity and their relion, his support of corperate america and their misdeeds (several major people in his cabinet are Enron execs, hell he used the enron jet during his presidential campaign) is ruining the economy. He got his start in business thanks to the bin ladens, its actually a fact that they were one of his major financial backers. In my opinion 20 years from now once people have a chance to look back on his presidency we will see that it was the worst in history. Just think we spent how many 100s of millions trying to rid ourselves of clinton cause he got a blow job from a young chubby intern...who has really done the worse job?

The scary thing is that he'll probably get re-elected, unless something goes 'wrong.' For him, that is; his entire presidency has been a 'wrong' for the American people.

I'm glad that many of you think that George Bush did a 'great job' with Iraq. We went in there to liberate the Iraqi people, capture and/or kill Saddam Hussein, and capture any weapons of mass destruction.

First off: define liberation. Is liberation a state of anarchy in cities? No water or electricity or communication services? No? Then, is liberation a retired American general as 'interim governor' (read: military dictator)?

Second off: Saddam Hussein. Where is he? Is he dead? Does it matter anymore? GET OSAMA, GET OSAMA!!! INVADE AFGHANISTAN!!! (oh wait, we can't find the bugger.....) GET SADDAM, GET SADDAM!!!!! INVADE IRAQ!!!! (oh wait, we can't find him either... damn.....) THEY'RE BOTH HIDING IN NORTH KOREA!!!! BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO INVADE NORTH KOREA BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY DO HAVE WMDs AND OH NO, A DIRTY WAR LIKE THAT WON'T GET US RE-ELECTED!!!!

Topic 3: Weapons of mass destruction. Have we found all the ones that we 'knew' were there, and we knew the 'exact locations' of? Nope... So, scenario #1 is that there were no WMDs in the first place, in which case we were stupid, arrogant assholes with despotic tendencies. Scenario #2 is that there WERE WMDs but we didn't find them, and now they're scattered across the Mideast in the hands of who knows who. So effectively we've made the situation worse.

But who gives a fuck about Iraq, anyway? George Bush is supposed to be running OUR COUNTRY. Do you think he's been doing a good job? Homeland Security? What a joke. Do you feel any safer now? Do American troops in Iraq make you feel safe, while at home your dad is in danger of getting laid off and all fifty states are bankrupt?

1.) Historians that know more than you are currently debating the causes of the end of the great depression through dissertations. Therefore you can not say without evidence that WW2 ended the great depression.

It is true that the employment rate jumped exponentially for all demographics upon entry of the war... even black women. There was an especially large influx of women into the work force. When the men got back from war, though, they took their jobs back, and by so doing the replaced the majority of working women. If you are arguing that the depression was resolved by employing the unemployed, then there should have been a depression shortly after the war as a result of the women that lost their jobs.

That was the very abbreviated version. I know people that have written hundreds of pages on this topic.

2.)I confused the defense budget with what % of it would provide essentials for everyone in the world for 2 years.

3.) The estimated cost of the war and reconstruction has ranged from 100 billion to 300 billion, and will probably go up exponentially if we attempt to restore the oil refineries. When I said 10 billion, however, I was going with the 90 billion dollar budget and the lowest estimated cost of the war (which was provided by a previous post).

Not that these numbers are really relevant. The war is going to cost, at the most, around 32 dollars extra per person per year... obviously a relatively insignificant number.

 
Both of you are correct in both assumptions...1)Recession follows war initially (because of a return to consumer goods within industry and the costs of retooling the industry to produce them), but 2)the by products of war can cause a great boost for the economy ('POTENTIALLY')-SV Hucker is actually agreeing with you sundown hes just stating long term. Both of you are well versed in economic theory however the practice of which is something else entirely. Therefore, neither of you are right or wrong because you cant prove conclusively one way or the other. It has not been determined in the short run that we had a recession due to war because we were already in a recession before it and secondly it hasnt been enough time (long term) to understand how Iraq's 'potential' investement through war will yield returns (if any). My 2 cents: Bush is surrounded by power hungry morons in the defense industry and contracting business. (look at the ties to bechtel and haliburton and the defesne department). He listens to them for advice rather than going on a sound economic plan. If he were really a 'good' or rather 'smart' president he would worry about the long term condition for our people by NOT cutting taxes. Cutting taxes drastically reduces our ability to combat both terrorism in both the short term and long term. The government needs money..plain and simple if it wishes to have an army/social services ect. or whatever the hell they want to fight terrorism. Goverment has a huge potential to supply economic stimulus to the economy by spending it for its citizens and investing in capital. If they have no money to invest than nothing is achieved. Unfortunately wherever Bush learned math didnt teach him that two negative numbers dont make a positive if you are adding them together. Deficit-money to spend from taxes = less money and less stimulus. All republicans conservative republicans are greed and money hungry idiots who know nothing of economics other than keeping their money safe after their family hands it to them.

 
u see i would read those if i wasnt lazy, but i am. All i am gonna say is at least 66.7% of the goals what they used to JUSTIFY the occupation and war have not been met. Is that really a success? Not to mention the other 33.3% is HIGHLY debatable.

It is my opinion that the best way to control boom and bust cycles is to cut taxes and increase spending when in a recession, and raise taxes/decrease spending when on a boom.

You shouldn't generalize people that have chosen to generalize themselves by falling into the trap of bipartisanship. It is the black vs white, liberal vsconservative thinking in this country that worries me. Mature thinkers should grow out of these dichotomal habits as they progress through life.

What you just said is no more accurate than a republican claiming that all democrats are ashamed of their wealth and aspire to socialism, which is the antithesis of the aspirations of advanced beings according to John Locke.

 
Locke had some good philosophies, and pretty much invented liberalism. But there is something called 'extreme liberalism', which i believe is worse then a hearty conservative. So i do think, there are worse ppl then bush, because at least he gets things done.

Republicans' excuse for a record tax cut in '01 was that we needed to give back the surplus to the taxpayers. Now, while running a huge defecit, we have a $550 billion tax on the table to 'stimulate the economy and produce jobs.' When is cutting taxes not the answer? When taxes are zero and we have anarchy?

 
or if we hadn't spent the whole surplus on a record tax cut . . . haha oh man imagine the uproar if clinton tried to raise taxes in the late 90s boom period. for all the faults the right finds in clinton, not raising taxes is rarely mentioned.

 
I wasnt oversimplifying just being sarcastic...I dont believe all of them are...just thats teh way they tend to act sometimes. IF we want more social programs the money has got to come from somewhere....do you honestly see the consumers using their tax dollars to highten the economy though?
