Who skis with a knee brace or some type of brace

i ski with a knee brace pretty much every time i ski unless if its in my backyard but i tore my meniscus last year and started to ski with a brace and have never skied without one so should i try a day without a brace even if it hurts is my knee just weak or do i have to have a brace on every time i ski??

I dislocated my patella and sprained my MCL playing football a few months before ski season so I skied with a brace like one time before it started sliding down and bugging the shit out of me so I just found a good natural remedy before I got surgery in may after ski season.

I tore my Achilles last year and occasionally ski with compression wrap if it's sore. If you just try one day and take it easy until it feels totally normal you should be fine

Had a friend who tore their ACL skiing two years ago and he always skied with a brace after that, said he felt nervous skiing without it but he forced himself to do it and eventually got over the mental block

I tore my ACL, got it fixed a few weeks ago. Surgeon is telling me there is little to no evidence that a brace can prevent an ACL tear. All they do is make you feel safer in your head.

I was told the same thing for ACl, MCL and LCL last week. However, I'm getting a fitted brace just incase.

I dont like relying on braces. Instead strengthen your knee. Always using a brace will just keep it weak

Keep strengthening the surrounding muscles like youre doing, dont forget about your hammies. Also dont stop doing your pt exercises. If they get too easy add reps or weight.

Also stretch and do other injury prevention exercises. And always get a good warmup before lifting and skiing

PT and Strengthening.... Braces are "Old School" Quoting my Physical Therapist who is younger said his teachers were 50/50 on braces in school. That a weak knee in a brace will still move east an west ( which isnt what we want ) Proprioception is the sense of neighboring body parts an knowing where they are in space an the coordination between. In more understandable terms your body knowing when to engage certain muscles an them being able to respond when called upon..

With that being said I will be wearing a brace strictly for the fact that it will remind me I am not invincible an DO NOT want to go thu with what I did the past 6 months.. I have been strengthening my knee/body to where I am now in better shape IMO than prior my injury. Strong knee in a Brace hopefully I get a few years before I tear something again.

Where I've found that a knee brace never helped with my pain, KT tape is pretty much a godsend. I apply two strips, so they cross above and below the knee (see image), and it helps with my knee cap tracking properly as well as provides some additional support. Since I started using it, I can ski longer and harder, and can even ski two days in a row again. Plus, because it's so low profile, I find it a lot more comfortable to wear. I'm still working on knee strength, but this is a nice aid until I get to that point.

I tore a lot of things in my knee one time and I'm 3 and a half years out from surgery now but I still ride with my custom brace 100% of the time. it's saved my ass more than once from a repeat.

This upcoming year will be my second year skiing with a knee brace (I have a custom Townsend). Got surgery on my ACL Feb 2015. I highly recommend using a brace if you have one, my knee is just as strong as my other one now. Eventually I'm sure I'll stop using but it is just reassuring to know your knee isn't going to snap on you. Best of luck OP!

I dislocated my knee last year a few months before ski season playing soccer. I strengthened it and skied with a brace all of last season and has no issues. Almost a year later I dislocated it again playing soccer. Now my odds of dislocation a third time are about 85%.

I'd like to know if anyone has had multiple dislocations but strengthened hard and prevented any other issues?or after a second dislocation jump to surgery?

Dislocated my patella 3 times. I feel my knee now is stronger than ever because after the 3rd one i put my head down and worked my ass off to try and prevent a 4th. Running skiing and anything active used to make it sore every time but i havent had even that problem in a while now.

@OP, what brace did you end up getting?

i got this brace at my pt doctor and it had 2 metal things on the side and it was padded all inside pretty nice but when it got sweaty it slipped down but worked better than ace braces id say
