Just curious out of the skiers on here who else is into snowmobiles? I haven't gotten into it yet but have been looking at the polaris RMK's and damn they look badass.

What are the best areas in the West for backcountry riding?

God damn love me some sledding and of course sled accessed skiing.

I had an RMK dragon before, thing was a piece of shit, fun to ride but shitty to fix. A few of my buddies have RMK pros and they seem to be better. The glue comes apart fairly easily in the front end though. Im on a scummy and absolutely love it. Would like to upgrade to the 3" 163 or 165 though.

I had a '13 rmk and it was like trying to throw around dead weight. Im more of a cat fan but the M series has serious throttle, belt, and pulley problems. Honestly if you were to go out and buy a sled i would go with a ski doo freeride or a shorter track summit. Their 163's lose a tone of power trying to move the track and trying to put a turbo one is harder than getting in your sisters pants.

Bear Valley CA, endless amounts of bc stuff thats fair game between us and south lake Tahoe via Ebbetts pass.

Wyoming has some awesome terrain. Big open pastures at 9000-10000 feet that normally has really fluffy and deep snow. As for exactly where that is, I ain't gonna tell ya!

used to have sleds back home. been meaning to get one out here for years. anyone ever tried a snow bike in the backcountry? was thinking a 250 or 300 2 stroke would be pretty sweet.

well yea no shit, their just either old as fuck and hard to find, or expensive as shit.

Youre going to need a 4 stroke. That low end power to get the track moving. Alot more weight to get moving than a tire.

2015 KX450F Timbersled checking in here. Got a 2009 Summit X 163 as well. They each have their merits but I'd have to say I'm somewhat partial to how insanely nimble the Timbersled is. Riding through trees and tight terrain is awesome on that thing

How is it with shifting? I feel like a 450 would be underpowered and have to shift all the time. Also is it easy to start in the snow?

Ive thought a timbersled would be pretty insane but always wondered how hard it would be on the bike and if it would cut it.

Also what length timber sled do you have? I would imagine the 137 kit would rob a little more power than say the 120 track but it may not handle deep powder as good.

well if money wasn't an issue i think a 610 banshee motor swapped into a 450 mx frame would be the best. fuck that would be insane haha.

I had one for years. Lots of fun. I bought mine to go out far and go skiing but ended up just riding and not skiing much.

They are also fucking money pits.

Get on that new SkiDoo 173 track 1000 if you want to get everywhere, get really stuck and probably fuck yourself up.

Just picked up a 1973 arctic cat cheetah 340 for $200. I have always liked the older vintage sleds. The thing rips for being 40 sumthin years old

The homies and I have 4 sleds, all ski doo 800s between the years 03 and 07.

Things are money pits but rad as fuck. Expect to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars a year in snowmobile related costs.

The skiing access is sweet but you'll find that riding the sled itself is just as addicting as skiing.

true story.

I used to have a strong sled ski crew 10-12 deep... we have all upgraded to newer machines in the last few years, and atleast 50% of the crew is now sled only. :(

Ouch,

Definitely not a poor mans sport. Ya gotta pay to Play.

What happened? early season carve too deep? or did she just get away on you?

Was a buddy of mine, got bucked off at the top of a big bowl, ghosted into a big tree

Not my sled, but a friend. Got bucked at the top of a big hill and it ghosted into the biggest tree. Wrecked 1 of everything haha

I am amazed by the magnetic properties of trees.... It can be the only fucking tree in the entire bowl, and somehow the ghost machine always finds it.

I feel like it's worse when I'm on it. The only tree in a gully and the second I look at it I end up smashing right into it.

Yep! Its so fun to find yourself at the bottom of the progression curve again. Learning how to carve a sled is just as fulfilling as learning how to carve on skis.

Also, apparently the new Doo 850s are the best thing since sliced bread. Anybody ridden one? Looking to demo this year.

Goalssss

Similar story here. We used to ski every single day we were out, all 5-10 of us, wore our ski boots on our sleds all day, towed or doubled sledless buddies out. We soon found that sledding was so much fun and way less work. One major downfall was that we built great racks for our skis and started putting our ski boots in our tunnel bags and wearing regular boots up. We ended up sledding all day as we had very little holding us back now. However over the years the skadoogas got legit and we learnt how to sled. We soon found ourselves exploring untouched terrain in places we never could have accessed before as shitty sledders.

Interesting thing is now were moving back to skiing. the sledding addiction is wearing off, the zones we've found from getting a little more gnarly on the sleds have re-invigorated us to ski and it's much easier being set right up now. The crew has tightened up now as we can no longer get the shitty sleds/sledders into these zones.

Looking forward to a great season now.
