i learn by ear, except solos by powertab.

i'm taking up bass too. it's pretty sick

^ nice, when you've learned guitar first, bass is ridiculously easy. I've recently taken up the drums... They're a wicked instrument to play, but families/housemates usually aren't a big fan.

All the guitars I have these days are acoustics: Larrivée D-09, Martin D12-28, and a Lowden O25c. I've been playing for 27 years. Yeah, I'm old(er).

I hate tabs. Ive always hated tabs, because people can't actually play their instrument, they can play songs. If you can't do it by ear or by real written music, get some godam lessons. It'll make the music world a better place.

About tabs... simply put, tabs are simpler than real notation for guitar. Mainly because notation means figuring out where to play the notes exactly on the fretboard. Anyone knows the same note can be played in many different places. So basically if you're trying to learn a song you've never heard, you could end up playing the good notes but in a different area of the fretboard than someone else.

I know how to read music, yet I find tabs to be much simpler to write down music, simply writing the tempo above. You can't deny it: it saves the hassle from figuring out the schematics. Yes I'm used to it so, anyways, I use both, so I'm pretty neutral on the subject.

I first started when i was younger (can't remember how long acually) but i have a Washburn, and an old 1960's GHoliday that plays like its brand new. no scratches on it at all.
