Who picks the VOD?

Most of the time its you guys. VOD is based on high rated videos. Sometimes we will bump things if theres something awesome we want to showcase, but 9 days out of 10 its Top Rated
 
The code/critera must be a little more complicated than that. For example, is minimum time on the site or minimum number of votes part of the criteria. Would a video be top rated if it was an average of 8.5 over 100 votes than another that was a 9 over 25?
 
thats a good question cus if a video is a 9 it could have been voted by 20 people when another video is a 8.8 and voted by 200 people... but im sure time on the site comes into play
 
There's actually a pretty fancy algorithm that we created which picks the VOD. We spent a lot of time tuning it to make sure it does a reasonable job selecting what you guys will think is a "good" video.

It looks at a whole ton of different data. We won't release that because we don't want people to be able to game the system. :)

 
Sorry, I completely left out:

Jeff and the other senior staff can choose to over-ride the algorithm in order to add a specific video we want.

 
Yeah that's the idea... we tried to create something that has a blend of user ratings and staff curating built into it.
 
its actually not, the video now (vinnycash KOS) was just updated at 12est tonight, cats video was the day before. the dates refer to the date the video was added.
 
Yeah we've made some tweaks to the way its picked. First off, it is now totally automated.

Second, we have been making the rating criteria far more strict, so that it will do a better job of looking back over the last week/month and picking thee BEST stuff. Not perfect yet, but getting there. eheath you are correct, the date is when the video was uploaded not when it was picked.

It picks one video at midnight that is the 'best' video it can find. It can look anywhere from yesterday to 365 days ago, depending on if it finds top quality with a scaling minimum number of votes.

That vinnycash edit was pretty awesome if you ask me.
