Who killed punk? I'm gonna go with Green Day

Don't get me wrong, Green Day is a pretty cool band, but their just too poppy. I mean, Green Day is the band that pretty much got me into punk, but their also the band that opened all those doors for bands like NFG, and Blink 182. If they hadn't fused so much pop, and hadn't revealed the fact that if you say your punk, the general public will think you are, because the general public doesn't know any better. Runners up for this are Nirvana (come on, I know your sick of hearing about how they changed music forever....well, they did, but for the worst) and the Ramones. Yeah, I know, how can I be blaming the creators of punk for it's downfall, well, here it is: the Ramones were tired of stadium rock and wanted to get back to 50's bubblegum pop, so they formed and started writing songs that sounded like that. Of course, what struck everyone was their speed, and their attitude. I'm gonna stop myself here before it turns into a rant/history lesson.

i dont know about nirvana changing music for the worst. i mean, i know musically speaking, they were worse than the glam rock and whatnot that was prevailant at the time, but who really likes glam rock? i mean like it as more than a joke? im glad it got rid of that stuff, but at the same time they did start the three chord revolution in ernest.

punk as a genre has never been musically 'good' however, so thats a tough blame to place.

I odnt think green day did. honestly, Warning was marginal, idk about international superhits, and American Idiot is marginal. not horrible mind you. I think Blink 182 is much more at fault then Green Day. like blink 182 started making bad cds before greenday started recording bad cds.

To anewmorning: the Ramones started the three chord revolution, and since i dont have time to look up ernest to find out what it means in the context you used it in, im gonna stick with that answer. and while punk never nessesarily required talent, it did follow a certain guideline, that it be fast, and that it have a very 'fuck you' attitude. So, actually, the more complicated a song is, the less punk it is. and to jaross: you may blame Blink 182, but Blink 182 could never have been if it weren't for Green Day. I mean, all those 'pop punk' bands worship Green Day. and this is something i meant to include in my original post- Johnny Ramone dies, and all MTV can do is run a special on Green Day new album? wtf is that?

who likes glam rock? bowie is fucking amazing (at times), i wouldn't diss on him. t rex (bang a gong) is good and i at times like roxy music...so don't drop glam rock completely.

^ true man ... punk is the shit..it comes in many fourms pop hard core emo... and they all have good parts about them. I'm not a bit fan of green day but i wouldnt blame them for any thing.

---------------

Is it something i said so fuck you to.

I really don't think it was Green Day really. Sure Dookie was a huge hit, ut after that album they kind of seperated theirselves from punk and started to just do their own thing. If you want to place the blame on who ruined punk it would be like NFG or Good Charlotee. But it is kind of say that punk has been ruined, there is still plenty of punk out there that no one knows about and is good.

no the thing that killde punk was fucking using the same chord in different places to make a whole cd

yeah im going to go with laterails on this society did kill punk, big clothing companies exploiting 'punk' style, record companies, but punk isnt fully dead yet

Member # 1551

^^ yes and the majority of todays society dont wanna hear a song about someones fridge that leaked freon and killed 3 people, they wanna hear songs that they can relate to and sing along to a nice tune about a girl breaking up with them

My time is winding down.............just wait for it

i have never heard a song about somthing like that shit. maybe like one anti-flag song but i dont even know about that....

if you're refering to politics being in songs in general, alot of people do want to hear a song about that. Hearing songs about girls is pretty fucking boaring. it is like, who the fuck cares what girl you are going out with or what girl dumbed you or whatever. It is possible to make a good sone about girls/ whatever, but it doesnt happen too often.

and no, punk definatly isnt dead.

the fridge leaking freon and killing people was an example

there is no such thing as one band killing punk or any genre, your all a bunch of pussy faggot ass whores! there is still great bands of any genre (except country) no one ban can ruin something just the gay bands that copy it. and how can blink 182 or green day kill punk when they are stupid ass bitch music mainstream shit to begin with!? and whoever hated on the ramones fuck you. in fact fuck you all except lateralis. eat shit and die!!! and if want good music then a guitar/bass/accordiane/drum/bagpipe/spoon/ or whatever instrument you prefere and make your own form of music art but apparently some group diobolicly ruined your precious punk.

I agree that it was Nirvana, but they are still one of the best bands ever.

They just put it into the mainstream more than any other band.

Green Day came around too late to kill it, they might have put the nail in the coffin, but Nirvana started it, unintentionally and u can't blame them, but thats what happened.

They pretty much fucked up all of rock actually... they spawned bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and further down the road, Silverchair, Green Day, Our Lady Peace, and then pretty mcuh from there on, there has been nothing good coming out of mainstream rock or punk...

Nickleback, Jet, even bands liek the Strokes and shit suck... all new rock bands are Nirvana wannabes

punk isn't dead

cause true punk still there

it's just like old hip hop and stuff...

as I know old rap and stuff were not yo I'm a gangster I got shot 9 times so I'm cool...

punk was about revolution, nihilism, and there is still plenty of people beliving, signing and trying to promote this stuff the Proletarian uran nihilist kids, mostly know as punks still exsit. It's just that people have seen money in it and try to corrupt it, but it's still alive.

and I would say that green day and Blink put that label of pop-punk. Nirvana just ended the rock'n'roll era to what we are now the pop punk stuff.

You cant blame a band for going big what nirvana did was play the music they knew and loved the fact that it caught on was not there fault in fact Kurt Cobain was very upset at the fact that they had become too mainstream and in aletter to his fans right before he was murdered by Courtney Love he said how he was breaking the band up due to the direction the public took the music! So to answer your question MEDIA and little kids tryin way too hard to be punk is what killed punk!

Pete is currently sulking around Mt. Hood, shooting with Poor Boyz Productions and hitting on Kristi Leskinen. She hates guys, Pete lamented, so it’s not going good. Apparently Canada isn’t the only thing that’s tough for Pete to get into.

Media... yes, that probably the real reason for pretty much everything thats wrong with the world today to tell u the truth!

God, that bitch Courtney Love was Djing on my favorite radio station last thursday, I wanted to reach through my radio and, god, I don't even want to get near that filth queen. And- The Damned started punk, and they're still going to this day...

I never said anyone killed it on purpose, I'm just saying that they've 'killed' it by misrepresenting it. I probably should have mentioned that earlier. And I am aware that there is still good punk out there, I'm a huge fan of the Virus, and A Global Threat and whatnot. I'm not stupid, I know what punk is about. I am one of those kids you see with the leather jackets and patches and safety pins etc. And whoever said the Damned started it, I hope your kidding.

I beleive that real punk is dead, because punk was a culture and a way of life. Now its just a style. The bands didn't kill it. It was time. Overtime everyhting evolves and changes. Punk is gone, but the Cd's and records are still around. Even if bands may be still producing teh same punk sound nowadays, its not the same. Who knows... Maybe it will come back one day.

it was all Crass's fault!!!!!!!!111!!!1!!!

but serously, it was mtv, the media, and record companies.

i dont believe anyone killed punk. and i dont even see what kind of music you play as a sign of whether your 'punk' or not. punk is about ideals. some of you people may call antiflag pop-punk...but man if youve ever met those guys..theyre as punk as you can get...not only in the fuck you sense..but in that they believe everyone has rights and noone can take that away...its not all that superficial bullshit like record labels and clothing...nothing can kill real punk mentality.

green day definately. they use the same fucking chord progressions in every song. it pisses me off that bands like that have labels for putting 4 chords together and doing it for 10+ years.

but this is some good shit \/

It was the media, I bet you have these people wouldn't have a problem with Green Day if they were still underground like they were in the Lookout! days. And about the 4 chords...Ramones, Sex Pistols...it was there since the beginning.

greenday definatly brough pop punk into existance with dookie. though I put most of the owness on the media/ record labels/ mtv/ us as consumers in general. The record label picks up a band who they think will sell millions of albums, then promote the hell out of them on mtv, we as consumers buy them and the labels bring more of the same because it is making them rich. as with everthing else in the capitalist society in my opinion. I know it is not really this simple, but it is a fairly accurate generalization.

well you obviously don't listen to alternative music. i've probably only heard of half of those bands, but i'm sure they're good in their own special little way.

CHECK IT

Just to clue you in on a little something, that band that you linked to is what is commonly known as EMO. EMO, is a spinoff of punk where sissies bitch about losing a girlfriend. Normally, EMO bands have lead singers that can actually sing. That band's lead singer could not sing for shit. I'm aware that most of the bands on my list have lead singer that also cannot sing all too well, but thats because it's a list composed of mostly street punk and 80's hardcore bands, where the quality of the music is secondary to it's raw energy.
