Who Is The Greatest Skier Ever, and Why Is It Candide Thovex?

extremely sick edit, was watching strike 3 the other night and it is nuts he is still on top of the game and throwing down like this

he destroys pillows. he had some prehopping and ninja landings that were OO.

I hope we get more than 60sec of Candide this season

His style is completely unique from everyone else. Steeziest freerider to ever live. He is the living bird skier man.

The 5 that he does on the monster hip is like honestly one of the craziest things ever done. So effing big

Dude is an alien monster at skiing but I actually fucking hate the ASMR-type audio in his videos. I totally get why they do it and it's a unique perspective but it's pretty goddamn annoying to do all the time, just gimme some nat sound please.

Bruh I legit had an orgasm watching that shit dude. Like if god could ski he would look up to Candide. Just an absolute legend on skis.

Sometimes I hate drones, but we need them since there’s no filmer who has a chance at consistently keeping up with candide.

I'm a supporter of drone follow cams in the backcountry, candide uses them pretty tastefully I think. what I can't stand is when the drone is doing donuts around the skier makes me want to puke

On a more historical approach to this, candide is only the greatest of the last 20 years. If we go way back, it begins with Jim McConkey(Shane’s dad) who pioneered heli skiing in BC along with operating the ski school at Whistler. He was regarded as one of the greats during the 60s. Then in the 80s, you could say Glen Plake and Scott Schmidt were taking the freeriding scene to a whole new level(the 70s were a weird period in skiing that I don’t know much other than the rise of hotdogging). Then when the 90s came along, those like Mike Douglas and members of the New Canadian Air Force helped to further the sport. Mike Douglas for one, pioneered the D spin. Other accolades included JP Auclair and none other than Shane McConkey who later in his career really embraced ski BASE jumping. Now as the 2000s came along, a new and more extreme era of skiing also appeared on the scene as those from the near past influenced an entirely new era of skiing. Another big influence were the boarders in the 90s and trying to implement their tricks into skiing and we all probably know quite a bit about the 2000s and beyond in terms of skiing.

im obviously missing people in here but these are some of the names that came to my mind. One thing that sets the greats and greatest apart in my mind nowadays(given some circumstances) is being able to stomp huge airs and with tricks involved. One thing in which Candide associated himself with the most. With the creation of social media however, skiing has gone so many places in recent years, most don’t realize.

on another note, is candide the first skier to "octograb"? at about 2:05 in this video?

He has the same looseness and sporadicalness as a modern swerve skier but but unlike them he has such a smooth style and is able to look good on any terrain at any speed in any condition

Seriously, this guy is almost 40 and still skis like this jfc

39 years old and skiing as hard as he does is GOAT-like and even if he didn't he'd be the GOAT.

I don't think you can argue he isn't after looking at his resume. He's probably going to be the only person ever to win gold in every x games discipline and the FWT

My take, depending on the metric:

-Pure skill: Markus Eder probably, although Candide is def top 5

-Impact: Tie between McConkey and Candide

Longevity: Candide, but Mark Abma is a valid contender.

Project Success: Candide hands down

So yeah I guess it really is Andri Ragettli huh damn

Pure skill depends on the aspect, Markus is only really a big success in big mountain AFAIK but candide dominated park, pipe, and big mountain

Lol kind of looks that way. I don’t think he’s done anything but a tail grab since about 2005 tho…

andri ragettli is GOATed. Candid sucks ass.

First off nobody knows or gives a fuck about aNdRi rAgEtTli. He’s just another stupid park skier that started a YouTube channel because nobody else would recognize him. Candide on the other hand is the real GOAT. This is cause he is just absolutely cracked at park and big mountain and freestyle so why don’t you and your quadruple xl hoodie go shove a look pivot heel piece dildo up your asshole. Good day to you asswipe.

Nah that's just the perspective. Charles Gagnier was the first I think.

No I did not know. I did a quick google search with no luck, that's why I said AFAIK. Thanks for the info though

yes I know the Gagnier bros named/popularized the Octograb at Xgames/US Open back in the day...Im saying it looks like Candide might have been doing em way back when.... I still cant tell if he grabbed both hands or not, but he damn well could have.

Idk man, I kinda disagree with you as well. Markus is crazy skilled for sure and has a deeper bag of tricks than most big mountain guys, but he never really won any significant event when it comes to slope, big air or pipe whereas Candide won X games gold in all 3 disciplines in addition to his FWT title. So as he said Candidate dominated anything he touched, whereas Markus only ever dominated big mountain.

Different eras so never fair to compare anyway, but Candide's resume is more impressive than Markus', and if there's one category where I'd give Candide the top spot, it's certainly overall freeskiing skills in his era, no one can really touch him when it comes to how well rounded of a skier he was in his prime, but if there were a contender, it'd probably be THall and not Markus imo.

Nah bro your tripping, did you watch Andri during the xgames slopestyle. Candide is the GOAT of skiing I agree, but the GOAT of freestyle skiing is Henrik Harlaut 1028435.jpeg

was thinking about this today

JP Auclair should absolutely be considered for GOAT

- pioneer of the sport, first person ever to be seen with a pair twin tips in public

- one of the first street skiers in the early 2000s

- slayed gnarly big mountain in PBP movies in the late 2000s

- RETURNED to street skiing in the early 2010s (mad respect there) and released one of the most iconic street parts of all time

Didn't win a crazy amount of medals or awards but JP was there from the beginning as absolutely crushed it in the streets, BC booters, big mountain, etc. Go watch his revolver segment. It has all types of newschool skiing and he crushes it in in all of them.

JP Auclair literally gapped a mountain village in 2001. The fact a mortal could stand on top of an insane jump like that and nail it makes him the GOAT in my opinion.
