I'm certainly not jealous. I'm happy to say that I work my ass off to earn my way, and I certainly pay my way in taxes.

It costs pennies for one person, but there's plenty of people out there that are abusing the system that's meant to help people that really need it, and he's perpetuating that. That costs not only the people that pay for the system (myself included) but the people who might actually have found themselves in a shit place and need it to help them out.

 
Do you really think that many people are living off of food stamps that don't need it. I mean its not like he's collecting wellfare or anything hes just getting some decent meals for free. Its not like hes living like a king hes just skiing and living in a car. Must have worked jobs to get his skis and car so he paid taxes on those so hes entitled to tax payer benifits like food stamps.

Plus what do you even get with food stamps I figure its just like soup kitchen fair or is it actually money for the grocery store??
 
yes millions abuse it in this nation.

they give you couple hundred dollars in the form of a gift card that you can only use to buy uncooked food with aka no restaurants etc.

these people also get groceries from food shelters for free, which in my experience have some pretty shitty food.

when you are not activley trying to participate in this society, but activly trying to benefit from it you have become a leach- a parasite to this country. We should fucking deport people like this and replace them with hard working mexicans who would gladly pay their taxes and not collect welfare just to get their green card.

Living off the system isn't that bad. I remember when I lived in France some people would decide to live off the system for a year or two and just party, ski bum, or do a bunch of other stuff. I agree doing it more than 5 years is kinda extreme but for a year or two, it's alright. Also to those that say that this is what is wrong with our country... u r fools, there are much much worse things to do. And don't pull the argument "what if everyone lived off the system?" that's just bull it won't happen unless the system starts giving out lots and lots of money.

Seriously who doesn't want to not work and just ski everyday and get free money? That's the life.

I'm actually an American citizen too.And you don't have to bust ur ass that's why we live in a developed country. (I work 2 jobs and go to college so don't worry I don't use food stamps etc.) I just think it's not that bad. If you wanna live off the system for a few years, great, have fun. I don't mind giving up a few pennies to help u out.

Dude didn't I just say I work 2 jobs and i'm in 17.5 credits at CSM. I think that is working kinda hard but I still don't think I bust my ass (I could work harder if I wanted to). I just don't need to. You have to enjoy life a bit, not work all the time.
 
They don't get it. maybe a decade or so getting shit on in the work force will change their minds, maybe they'll be delusional their whole lives. Whatever, let them work hard, put in long hours, put off hobbies and family, maybe at 65 or 70 and they retire they can go on a cruise or some shit. It isn't the hard work that makes America great, it's the freedom.

Dude im a Student I work my Ass off every free day i get 55 hour weeks and i still get food stamps. Ive got plenty of money but i still do it every fucking penny counts. Food bank and food stamps is a social service that is available thanks to our capitalist ways here in north america of spending money and wasting food. Theres always plenty of food available in these places if one person takes its not like theres not enough for another, ITS ALWAYS stacked to the tits. WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!! to judge who deserves and doesnt deserve to use these services made avaible to us. If you are ressourcefull enough to get the fuck off your lazy ass and go get yourself some food stamps or hit the food bank, then YOU WIN! :). So yeah this kid has money and he can spend it however the fuck he wants and live the ski bum life. Thats great im happy for im. But nobody absolutely nobody has the right to judge weather he has "legitimate entitlement"with all due respect... please suck it mr self righteous

Let me clear this up for you then.

NO ONE deserves food stamps. I'm a student, with about 60-70 hours of school/hw a week, and still am able to pay for MY food (and some of yours because I pay my taxes, you parasitic fuck).
 
Off my lazy ass? I work 60+ hours a week. I started my own business two years ago and all my income is earned by my own merit. I pay my rent on a studio and a house every month. Sometimes when business is slow, I eat rice and beans and PB&J to save cash.

But I don't look for handouts... because I'm a fucking man and I can make my own way, one way or another. If I had to get a second job, I would, and I did plenty of odd jobs to get my business to a level that actually supports me.

You're going to school, and hopefully you plan on doing something with yourself to give back once you are off food stamps. I can see why you think you need them, and at least you are doing something productive, and it's great that you're working hard. Living off of the hard work of other people so you can have fun however, is wrong... which is what OP is suggesting. It's called freeloading, and it's something to be looked down upon.

 
you might want to think about getting a warmer sleeping bag or at least doubling up too. lots of stories of friends waking up in the morning to find the water in their water bottles had frozen. if you're doing it in the depth of winter (at least in places worth sleeping in), its gonna drop to -30 some nights and you gotta be prepared for that. also move to a mountain thats gnarlier than hood if youre going to live in your vehicle. Might as well go somewhere where you can log bigger vertical and ski gnarlier shit while you shiver everynight, haha. get a carbon monoxide monitor too. dont die
 
oh also a remote car starter is for sure a worthwhile investment. it doesn't matter how warm your sleeping bag is, you still have to get out of it in the morning. Trying to get dressed super fast sucks and same as trying to change in your sleeping bag. Remote starter, put your base layer on the dashboard and when you wake up just push the button, wait 15 mins and you will have a toasty warm car, with warm clothes.
 
I agree with you sorta, we shouldn't judge him but food stamps were put in place for those in need and not those to "pimp the system". If the government paid for the food that was given to people on food stamps in such a way that NONE of tax payers money went to them, then I see it being perfectly fine. But the fact that people such as myself pay for those food stamps through taxes is wrong to take advantage of them when it is possible to still live the "ski bum life" by working even a 15 hour a week job to pay for food. Now its nothing agaisnt you or him, just the way i believe it should be handled.
 
Oh so the 9 to 5er is the one without a future? Sure ski bumming would be pretty fun to try for a season or too, but if I ever do it I will do it by my OWN means, not by leaching off society. Getting food stamps when you are perfectly able to get a job is not sticking it to the man, its just lazy and stupid, and you should be ashamed of yourself op.

And actually, OP owes a lot to a lot of people. He didn't pay for his schooling. He didn't raise himself. He is the product of MANY people's money care. To say that he doesn't "owe" society jack shit is pure ignorance. You would have to be raised by wolves in the middle of nowhere in order to legitamately make that claim.

The cost to raise a child to 18 years old is roughly $300,000 dollars. Not including college if OP went. In the U.S., public school costs between 7,000 to 18,000 per student, per year. So yes, if you want to get technical, OP does owe society something in return.
 
Well, since society does a pretty good job at keeping someone from showing up in the middle of the night, killing the OP and taking all his stuff, ya he owes society something.... Anyone who does not think society OWS them anything needs to come to terms with Leviathan.
 
I just camp out of my cars on Friday-Sunday. Not to bad. I have an Xterra so it's cozy for one. I have room to hang my stuff and sleep. ALWAYS pack extra socks
 
Not at all, what that sentence merely says is there is no possible way for the government to pay for the food without using our tax money. Therefor what OP is doing is not right, at least to what I believe.
 
No, the sentence that I quoted does not say that, it says something relatively stupid, hence my comment. To even suggest such a scenario is, in my eyes, a sign that you have not fully understood how a state/government functions, and justify it's existence.

I don't agree with OP's method of getting on food stamps, and the way he plans on using them without making an effort to work (or so it seems) But I'm currently on them, because I can't afford to buy what I need to stay healthy. I've got a lot of digestive issues which forces me to have to eat a certain way. (BLAH BLAH BLAH BILLY YEAH PALEO IS COOL SHUT UP.) Stop judging people based on whether or not they take aid from the government. If you're gonna judge them in some way, at least remember to distinguish between good and bad reasons to be on food stamps, and get angry accordingly.

Also, in this spirit of the thread... I lived in my car/boyfriends car WITH HIM (and we're still together, wtf?) off and on for 2 months last winter. Fucking sucked in some aspects, definitely was worth it on pow days, and for the simplicity of life. I gained some weight because I was eating shit all the time. Find ways to keep your diet good, and it'll help everything else. A little stove (pocket rocket, jetboil) can be magic when you're in a parking lot late at night and you're hungry.

In terms of sleeping bag/etc... I'd make sure you have extra blankets or another sleeping bag. We had like 19 blankets as well as a sleeping bag, and it still got cold in there. Your heater will make things so much better though. I don't know where at Hood you're planning on sleeping, but a better spot will make your nights more enjoyable. We got the groomer cat wakeup call every morning at like 4am. The first few times, I thought it was the apocalypse. Lawl.

 
youre wrong. it is the governments duty to provide resources for people. for most of us this is simply a road system or police force. But in some instances we are talking about food and shelter. these are basic things that every human needs. so yes, there is a place for it in our society. it is not one that should be taken advantage of but it is still necessary.

i know serveral good, hardworking, and intelligent folks that are just straight up poor and need help. They're working, going to school, donating bodily fluids, and even find time to volunteer at homeless shelters. And they collect 250 dollars/ month for food. So there are ways to utlize governemnt programs like food stamps or medicare and still make it worth it to the rest of society.

and fuck, i pay taxes too man i understand youre angst. but shit, thats the point of taxes, to go to government programs that better the country as a whole.
 
Nobody is saying that food stamps aren't necissary for somce people, everyone is just pointing out the fact that the OP doesn't really need the food stamps, is not trying his best to provide for himself, and thus should not be taking advantage of a service that should only be used by those who TRULY need it.
