Who has insurance?

If you do, and its your parents, super fantastic.

Since I do for one more winter, and many of my friends have been or are facing a similar dilemma, I'm wondering how many of you cope with this issue, and what you do about it.

If you're not covered, how hard are your riding? Honestly.

Recently a BMX rider from SLC who won the X-Games crashed and last I heard, and recently, thank god, has started to respond. Previously he was thought to have suffered extensive brain injury and haden't regained consiousness.

He doesn't have health insurance, insurance companies say he is "uninsurable". This type of intensive care can cost over 100,000 dollars. Please donate for his fund.

So what are twenty+ers to do once they graduate college?

Student Insurance covers you for maybe 6-12 months after you graduate...

Way shits looking, employer based health insurance could become even more inclusive...

Thoughts?

I am fully insured by my own means. My life is most definitely worth it. Hope that guy gets better too.

My student health insurance expired the minute I graduated, and since then I've been on a really basic plan thru Blue Cross (now called Anthem I think) with a $1000 deductible. It basically only covers medical emergencies, such as trips to the emergency room after lawn-darting off of a 40-footer, but it only costs me about $40 per month. Considering I'm only 23 and don't have (and never have had) any major health issues, it's really all I need for right now.

man you Americans get it tough. In NZwe have something called ACC. You hurt yourself skiing-Covered, you trip over and fall down stairs-covered, even if your wasted and hurt yourself, all covered by the govt.

america can fuck up something so simple.

"america, where the rich get richer and the poor get...well fuck the poor"

This is why im shit scared to come live/work in america, and even if you pay insurance whos to say your actually going to be covered.

No offense but not having universal healthcare is like living in a 3rd world country.

to be honest you gotta find a job that gives you insurance, even if its in addition to your job you already have. its not worth the bills. a visit to the emergency room is very expensive, forget about an admission or a surgery. your talking instant 5 figures.

some insurance ideas are

Fedex/UPS - 15 dollars an hour and Good shifts too for those in school or with another job

Anything for the state - Hard to get, tend to not pay much but bene's are sick

Starbucks - sucks shit, but you only have to work 24hrs to get insurance

now me... i work in an emergency room. so i have sick insurance. and then on top of all my coverage, i actually get an employee discount haha, just like an employee would get their coffees half off at starbucks.

I don't think I'd go into a terrain park without insurance. I"d be scared just to get on a chair lift.

Honestly, I would say having to wait for several hours to see a mediocre doctor for a 5 minute diagnosis and treatment for free is like living in a 3rd world country.

I am covered by my wife's insurance (yeah, I am that old....). She is a school teacher and it's a great plan with really good coverage. I will say I would be extremely hesitant to do anything in the park without coverage.

I blew out my shoulder this past summer. I had my own coverage at that point. The bill was over $1000 just to have my shoulder put back in the socket and for the IV painkillers. I only paid $87. I can't imagine what I would've done had I not been covered by insurance.

I didnt have insurance in august, and ended up in the ER. For a couple bags of IV, and blood tests in costed me $1,340.56. Luckily I got insurance in September, because I had to go back to the Hospital. Ended up staying for 5 days, and the bill was over $7,000. I didnt have to pay anything for that, but if i didnt have insurance, id be running to the carribean.

Not sure what kind of shit you people here about america, but honestly if you have insurance it is not that bad. Particularly having lived most of my life right outside of boston, having to pay for health insurance is not so bad when it means you are able to go see amazing doctors in amazing facilities.

and if you have decent insurance you will be covered, not once have I gone to the hospital wondering whether or not it would be covered. paying taxes out the ass for sub-par health care sounds much more like a 3rd world country, but either way as far as I'm concerned we both have some kind of health care available to us so we should all just be happy about that.

Yeah, I graduate this May and will be kicked off my parents' plan. Since I've had knee surgery and a bunch of broken bones and shit, I am "high risk" and it will be at least $10G a year.

work for the government. i fight fire over the summer and still get insurance. i dont think feds have insurance for seasonal work but since i dont take the insurance cause i'm still on the parents i get $400 extra a month

no offense dude, but if you want to ski, you have to pay insurance. Why don't you cut some expedatures and invest in a health care plan that is right for you. Spend the money each year/month and you can rest at ease knowing that your covered. And don't play the whole 'I don't have enough money bullshit either" because if you have the money to ski, you have the money to buy insurance. And don't expect the government to pay for it either. Because our government is the people. So you expect everyone else to pay for you to ski? My parents work hard for their money and they shouldn't have to give it away to people that are too fucking lazy to buy insurance. And plus no one should have to shell out hundreds of dollars each visit to the hospital/doctor to pay for the unensured people.

And to the people who are critizing America's healthcare system, just wait till your older and you need a vital surgery and you come to America to get it because your country puts you on a waiting list and hands your life over to sub-par doctors.

As of 8/13/08 I have no health insurance cause I just graduated from college in May 08.

I ski really hard about 120 days a year and will be competing in some big mountain events so its pretty sketch not having any insurance.

Hopefully I will be making enough money to buy some insurance, although I have heard alot of bad things about people's claims being turned down because they were injured while "extreme skiing"

I would check out ehealthinsurance.com - When I was laid off in March and lost my insurance, I got a plan to cover anything catastrophic - High deductible and high payout. You really want to protect yourself from a huge bill from something major - I had something like a $3500 yearly deductible with a max payout of $5 million (through Assurant, I think) knowing that the only reason I would use it is if I really broke myself off. I was paying around $75 a month for the coverage.

For small stuff (prescriptions and whatnot) go to urgent care.

last year i moved to nh to ski and i didnt have insurance cuz i got kicked off my dads after graduating from college...and in mass you have to have health insurance...plus i wanted it. so i straight up bought it. cost me like $340 a month or something ridiculous b/c i wanted to keep my own doctors and not have to switch and stuff. but now i have insurance through my job so its all good.

but def get it. one of my friends didnt have it and worked himself n a jump....landed on his back/side after overshooting a jump...he landed past the landing on the flat. we think he broke a few ribs and had some internal bleeding b/c he couldnt move and had like pools of blood under his ski you could see and he cried every time he had to take a shit for 3 weeks b/c it hurt so bad. it hurt him to breath and talk and move. he was out of work for 3 weeks. he refused to go to the hospital b/c he didnt have health insurance and couldnt afford it.

i lose my parents insurance on my 24th birthday which is in two months. i am very scared of this since i have had a ski injury pretty much every season for a few years now so i know my insurance is going to be really expensive.

I live in this wonderful country called Canada. Sure, I might have to wait for an hour in the hospital when I break my arm, but is an hour not worth $1000? Plus we pay less in taxes compared to what you guys pay in Health insurance.

Here in america you still have to wait an hour in the ER when your arm breaks. Hell, I had to wait all day.

Its bullshit to assume that just because someone can afford to ski, they can afford insurance. My parents have never really had much insurance, meaning I have never really had insurance.

Anyone have any tips for getting on a plan for me? I'm 18.
