You paddled one Kev?? Also just tried a Riot Disco a while back, that was pretty wikkid too, a bit small for me though. I'm too tall, haha. Jodi, I'm coming paddling with you guys!!! Tim, No i haven't paddled it yet...it's tough for me to try things out. Since i paddle C1 style. It's looks nuts. The double edges look sweet for carving on a wave.

whats the biggest water you guys been on? I did an 18 day private grand canyon trip. If your in colorado shop alpenglow for the best in paddle sports. Even though crystal is a 10 it's way smaller than lava.

Yo Kev, yeah, it's pretty mad. Carves like a knife through soft butter, it's soooo smoove and responsive, love it aye, it's a phatt boat, 200cms long, quite high, lots of foot room so it's nice as. Pretty weird shape too but it's a play boat with a real high tail and nose so you don't have to worry about it getting nailed and you don't have to work to pull the nose up at all, it just glides over most stuff. I've seen guys do front flips out of holes in them, it's sooo impressive

Biggest water I've done is probably the Tongariro river in New Zealand. Usually runs at about 20 cumecs and the top section is a high grade 3. We did it in a rain storm, very very cold and the river was running about 60-80 cumecs. Kinda stupid but some of the older guys I kayak with had done it like that before about 15 years ago. was an easy high grade 4 and probably 5 in places. I thought I was gonna die aye. Some of the guys swam a lot and got pretty beat up in some holes. I did a lot of rolling that day, haha, was cool man. but yeah, pretty scary, huuuuge water, sitting in the crest of a wave with the next 2 or 3 in the wavetrain towering like 4-5 meters above you, daunting stuff when you go through the whole train vertically on your tail going 'Aw fuck aw fuck aw fuck!!!' Great experience though. Wouldn't do it again, haha. Not yet anyway, get better first. Can you guys handroll?? I learnt how to do it about 18 months ago, can do it real good now and with one arm, it's cool as.

all you guys yak, or do you have rafts too? I mostly raft, kayaking is super fun but rafting is way tougher. I have a 15 foot sotar and a small aire puma.

Dashboard Burrito is the best movie ever.

My bro has a Wavesport Frankenstein, I tried it out in the pool and almost drowned myself because the skirt was too tight to get off and I couldn't roll. Shit.

Yeah man, haha, gotta watch that aye. I think I know the boat you mean aye. There's some pretty grade 6's down here too. Have you guys heard of the 'Full James' rapid?? It's in New Zealand. They have the world champs for rodeo there coz we got the best play holes in the world, haha, sweet sweet, I'll try find some pics, it's mad sick.

And werd Jodi, kayaking is way more carnaging, technical and brutal than rafting. A raft goes over stuff, it might get crunched a bit but it goes over. A kayak goes through stuff and quite often under it too. The lower boyancy and size means you get biffed around all over the place. Eaten in holes, smashed in blowout waves and pressure waves and stuff, it's all good fun though.

This is just above them. You can seal launch into here if you want or there's a nice little grade 3 run for about 15-20 minutes if you get in up the road.

This is the wave on a pretty low flow day, not very impressive. We've done it probably 3 times that size or something. There's a huge rock just over to the left that you can't quite see in that pic but it's usually covered and wouldn't be in this situation:

I got dragged over it upside down a while back, ripped like 20 huge gashes in my skirt and vest and banged my helmet, haha, freakin' hurt.

yeah damn.. thats scary...

and for anyone in the area jodi and i were just talking. my cottage is on the ottawa river and a bunch of us are planning a huge cottage party there end of july.. last weekend possibly.. anyways.. anyones welcome to hit that up. 20 beds to sleep on. and well a hella huge amount of floor and beach.. so yeah. would be worth it. got rapids 5 min walk down from me.. bnut if u wanna get the real good shit u gotta drive a bit.

You're head is as empty as a Phatt Tim's underpants.

I'll agree with you that a raft can go over some stuff and what not, but try rowing a 15 footer full of gear. It probably weighs a few hundred pounds. It's easy to move a kayak around bad spots but a huge cumbersome boat is alot harder. And when you flip it's alot worse too. I'm saying that rowing a boat all by yourself is alot harder than paddleing a yak.

i went to this thing on the Niagra River for a class trip last year. we were in these jet boat things in class 5, the boats were real safe but i could never do anything like that. we went by a class 6 but we didnt go in it, the waves were giagantic!

uh...niagra falls is a class 6, so no, you shouldnt do it...and i dont think jet boats go through class 5, although it's totally dependent on the reason for the wave being classified that...weather it's that you get trapped under it in a kayak, or if it's just a huge fuckin drop....whatever...jet boats are sweet...and timmy, i'm so jealous of you....those look like some sick ass creeks

actually there is one river, maybee two that the ratings go over 6. But a class 6 in those waters is nothing. A class 11 is equal to a 6 in those cases.

class 11??? what kinda jewish rating system is that??? the highest i've ever heard is class 6...which is totally and completely un-runnable resulting in instant death and the wasteful destruction of whatever boat you take into it

Okay, there is a class system that goes up pretty high and then there's a Grade system of I-V but a while back they introduced a grade VI

I - Flat water with maybe a few ripples

II - Pretty much the same but maybe a big river with a lot of water in it and swift current. Looking at the beginnings of a few pressure waves but bid deep water with nothing to hurt you.

III - The beginnings of dangerous. Shallower stuff, rocks, big pressure waves, surge backs, holes, drop offs and little waterfalls. Nothing that could really munch you too bad but could hurt you. Need skills to paddle this stuff.

III+ - Pretty much the same but this is stuff that can't quite be called a grade IV but is quite dangerous.

IV - Pretty mean stuff. Very shallow, fast, technical water that would eat you in a second. Big holes, huge waves, undercuts and surging waves to holes, quick transitions, or really deep fast water with huge holes etc.

IV+ Getting pretty nasty. Pretty much the same but bigger and meaner. A GradeIV would nail you in a heartbeat.

V - Very dangerous. Very high skill level required. Huge water, or really shallow and incredibly technical. Never wanna go near it unless you're very experienced or like the sound of a bodybag. Dangeous stuff that would kill you.

VI+ Classed as being non-paddleable but with the rising skill and decreasing brain levels of todays youth, they are being done all the time. Guys like Eric Jackson flying into holes 3 stories big in a playboat with no paddle (Wicked Liquid III), crazy stuff. A grade VI would destroy you and rip you into little pieces and spread you around the ocean no worries at all. That's mean water.

And yeah, Kev, it's a sweet sweet wave. Usually get out there about 3 times a month when I'm back home, it's nice.

the colorado river grand canyon stretch is rated 1 thru 10. to give ppl a better idea of what each rapid is like. the biggest is lava falls. it's sweet ass sweet. horn creek isn't a big rapid but it looks real mean and scary.

Does anyone have a conversion thing between the grades 1 to 11 and classes 1 to 6?? Thems confuse me. I haven't even heard of this 1 to 11 thing before, weirdness. haha, ah well.

New Zealand has some mad sick kayaking. I'll get some more pics up sometime. Rivers like the Buller, Wairoa, Waikato, Moto, Mohaka, all pretty savage stuff. Then the famous Huka falls that's such an insanely big waterfall that if you mess up you're dead for sure. The surgeback is just so intense that you pretty much have no chance. Scary stuff huh. I'm pretty happy playing in a grade 3 or 4 hole trying to do cartwheels, haha.

i'm guessing that 11 is like 6 and 1 is like 1....just sorta fill in the blanks...it's kinda 2 of the 11 points for every 1 of the 6...just more detailed
