I spend a lot of time in upstate ny and always see whitewater kayakers in the rapids and it looks like tons of fun. How would I get started in whitewater kayaking? Do I have to take a class or can I just buy a cheap boat and go at it. +Karma for good answers.

I live really close to the US National Whitewater Center, and I recently took a lesson. I had a ton of fun, but there are things that i learned in that lesson that I never would have been able to learn on my own. ( rolling, for example) So, i would recommend taking some sort of a lesson. As for getting a boat, I would try it first and see if you like it before buying a boat.

Many of my friends in colorado that kayak took lessons at the local pool first to learn to role and stuff. but to be honest with you real men tube the rivers. the stuff me and my friends hit on inner tubes kayakers wouldn't even touch and its way cheaper way more safe and is alot more thug. but kayaking is cool but i'd def take a lesson

Talk to Chip123, I lived with him last year at school and he is really into whitewater. Hes a raft guide for a few companies and also is really into boating as well, been in a movie or two for it.

By the way, if by upstate NY you mean watertown/the black river, than you've probably saw the kid im talking about in the post above.
