Whistler - Westside?

I've got a job in Whistler sorted out for the upcoming season, working at the base of Blackcomb. I've been offered staff housing in Westside though, which the website says is "Located a couple of kilometres south of Whistler Creekside". Am I right in thinking that this is a while away from any lifts and literally miles from the Village? The apartments described sound pretty sweet but I don't know if it's worth it if it's that far from work, lifts and good bars. It says there's a bus stop right outside but do the buses run all night?

yeah the bus service where you are is pretty good...it runs by your house from 5am to 3am probably about every 15 or 20 minutes. 10 min ride to the vill, 2 minutes to the creekside gondy.

Sometimes its actually quicker to go creekside gondola and ski to the village then it is to take the bus in town, put your shit on and go...

westside has the nicer homes but i'm not a big fan of the location. i'd rather live it up dirtball style in glacier ghetto housing. whistler isn't the same anymore though. i remember when there would be floor parties at glacier staff and we'd tag the walls before kicking them in... the good ol days are gone... you can't even enjoy smoking a fatty in your room without worrying about getting evicted and shit. i miss lot 8 kegs parties... westside ain't so bad though. but you should just tent it anyways

Well I've been emailing the housing department and in terms of staff housing they say my only option is Westside. I'm from Scotland and got my job in interviews in London and they've put everyone recruited through that program in one block which is bullshit. The apartments sound nice from the descriptions though: "spacious living rooms, dining areas and balconies" - sounds nicer than what a friend of mine told me Blackcomb staff was like. A 10 minute bus ride to work and home at night could become a pain in the ass though. If they run til 3.00am it might not be a huge deal though - what time do bars/clubs close in Whistler?

Nordic? Where abouts in the valley is that? I saw $500 + bills in another one of you guys' threads. Westside staff will cost me $420/$480 all-inclusive, but I've got plans of setting up a waxing buisness in my room and charging all the idiots in the block $10 a time, which could end up bringing in quite a bit of extra cash.

Definitely give me some more information on the house/room/location you guys are offering though - I'd much rather stay with decent guys who know what's going on rather than a load of English and Aussie assholes. Is it for the whole season or what? I saw McKeeman say in a thread it was just a couple of months. My job starts November 13th so I'd be looking for a place for November to April, possibly longer if I've got cash at the end of the season.

 
west side isnt worth it.. you will become lazy and not want to commute in the mornings.

i used to live there was the first people in out rooms though when it opened like 3 yrs ago so dunno if its changed much now

but i liekd it it was sweet place cheap rent but if u can find a good house for around same price doo it

What did you think about the convenience of the location Tosh?

If I want to secure a place in staff housing I need to pay a $215 deposit by the end of August. If I check in, that goes towards my first two weeks' rent. If I don't check in, I lose it. I've got some friends who are heading to Whistler before the job fair in October and they're goign to try to find a house then for us all. I think I'll pay the staff deposit anyway though incase they don't find somewhere immediately, then I know I've got somewhere cheap to stay at least. Westside staff is $420 or $480 including utilities - I doubt we'll find anything that cheap but I'm willing to pay up to about $600 will utilities for somewhere decent with my friends, my own room, proper kitchen, internet, etc. What do you guys think the chances of that are, if my friends are going to start looking for a place in September?

 
dude you can stay in our crawl space. its as big as a room but only 4 feet tall. $100 a month. and bring your gumboots theres lots of sheep here.

every house in whistler has an aussie closet.. i just turned mine into a grow op.

bambam.. dont bother living in staff accom.. you can find better and cooler places.. its alot easier now. but since you arent in town yet. you may have to pay a few months rent to keep the room..

but if those guys are offering a place in nordic. thats the place to live in whistler. really close to town and if the place is nice. then thats really hard to find. do it up.

Thanks man. I got a message back from MCKeeman - their rooms are filled. I really don't like the sound of the Westside location now, so looking for other options. My friends are heading into town before the recruitment fair (late September) to look for places that can accommodate me too, most likely in Creekside. So yeah, I'll have to pay about 6 weeks rent for the room being held for me before I arrive because I'm probably going to be staying at home working til the start of November.

I've been told by the guys I got my job through to pay the $215 staff housing deposit now anyway, in case my friends don't find a place. I'm pretty certain they'll find somewhere before I arrive if they start looking in September, right? Does anyone have an idea how much rent we'd be paying on a 4/5 bedroom place in Creekside?

 
dude get your hosue right now. when all those dirty aussies and brits come there are no houses left. get it now and it will pay itself off before the end of the year. for a 4 bedroom house your looking at $2000 and up. seriously get it now. piquemagazine.com or somethign like that. check the listings. do it

I don't think so. I really can't afford to start paying rent now on a place I'm not mocing into for three months. I'll talk to the other guys though and see what they think. When do most season workers arrive in town and start snapping up places?

 
foreigners come in mid spetember early october. shit all is left after that. were getting a place for 1600 durign the fall and summer/1800 during the winter. for ten months that will cost me like 3300. if you were to get a place for november you would be looking at 2200 for the same quality and size. (you are looking for a house with 1 more room so take that into account). if you start renting in november you probably wont get the fall/summer unless you sign a year lease, but you already missed the fall. your looking at 3500 to stay til june. you are paying roughly the same, or more, and you will get shittier choice in a house. especially if you wait till november. you may as well shove a pineapple in your poop shoot

west side is a ways away but its way nicer than the ghetto on blackcomb..... its got nicer rooms, ncer kitchens everything for a little more than ud be payin in the ghetto.... i lived there my first year in whistler and its pretty cool... chill ppl and its only 10 min ride from the vill....

 
Thanks everyone for the help. I'm definitely going to get a house now. Westside staff hound decent, but the location sucks from what everyone says, plus it's all shared rooms and $480 a month. I've got friends heading into town early-mid September who are going to hook up somewhere in time for the rest of us arriving early November. See you guys on the hill.

Yeah, the staff housing their offering me is a joke. $420 or $480 depending if it's an apartment with one shared room or two, in a shit location. And that's the only choice I have in terms of staff housing so fuck that.

My job starts on November 13th so I'm staying at home (free) until about the start of November and working to save up cash. One of the guys who was going to get into town early and find a house for us all now has a place in a Red Bull rail comp in London on November 20th so we might be leaving house hunting to one or two guys from our group. It'll all work out though I'm sure.

I'm going to get into town about the start of November so I can chill for a couple of weeks before things kick off. Any good Halloween partys happening that are worth arriving a bit earlier for?

 
yeah there always is...but why dont you move out early, set up a job ahead of time and kick it in whis...the longhorn will hire you on the spot when you get to town...they are in dire need of staff right now...call 604-932-5999 and ask for steve jackman...he will almost guarantee you a job the day you get to town if you wnat to come out now.

Yeah, that would be cool to chill in town for a while before the season gets going but I'm living at my parents' house just now so my living costs are zero. The only thing I spend money on just now is alcohol, seriously. I'm making the equivalent of about C$360 a week just now too. How much does this place pay and what kind of work is it?

 
Actually, I'm seriously considering this now...

I found that other thread mentioning the Longhorn - you work there Line69? And you stay in McKeeman's house? So it's kitchen work, yeah? If you give me an idea of wages and hours, this might be on. I've still got a few things to arrange, most importantly insurance and flights. I doubt I'll be able to make it out for the start of September, but this is sounding good. Like I said, give me an idea about hours, pay and job details at the Longhorn and this might happen. I'll phone the dudes I got my job through tomorrow- they've been helping me with things so far - I'll see what they think to it all.

The more I'm writing and thinking, the more this makes sense actually. It would give me somewhere cheap to stay while looking for my own place for the season. So yeah, I'm very[/i] interested now guys.
