Whistler to build the most insane gondi ever from Blackcomb to Whistler.

Ok, this is just insane...

A few people I know have sent this to some engineering dudes to see what this will take to actually happen.

SAM Magazine—Whistler, B.C., Oct. 26, 2005—In an effort to further cement its position as one of North America’s top resorts, Intrawest plans to construct a high-capacity gondola nearly three miles long, linking the peaks of Blackcomb and Whistler mountains, according to a report in Canada’s The Globe and Mail.

The C$50 million project will link the Rendezvous and Roundhouse complexes on Blackcomb and Whistler, respectively, at the 6,100-foot level, ferrying 4,000 people an hour (2,000 in each direction). To be built by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, the lift will be one of the most spectacular in the world. Its 26 cabins will each carry 30 passengers, at one point, riders will be 1,370 feet above the valley floor. The free span between the two peaks will stretch nearly two miles—longer than the length of most lifts.

There is just one catch. Intrawest is seeking a partner to share the cost. Assuming one can be found, the company hopes to have the lift in place for the 2007-08 season.

3 MILES. That would be such a long trip loaded into a box with 7 other sweat smelly people you don't know.

or

the worlds best opertunity to fuck in a gondi with your gal

with the typical silence that is known in gondolas, trying not to laugh when yer in it with ridiculous people. I dunno how id feel being 1,400 feet above the ground in that thing haha

U would think that it would have no towers and just be suspended. It would be very difficult to build 1300' high towers. If there are no supports though seems like it would sway a lot.

honestly if i was going across that almost 2 mile free span, which i believe to mean there is a gap of poles spanning the valley for 2 miles, over 1000 feet up, on a windy day, i think id puke.

well obviously it's that one. just explain to all the other folks that you'd like to have some dirty sex in the gondi, and i'm sure they'd be more than happy to catch the next one.

i think its a waste spend that money on some new terrain the two hills are connected at the base anyway by that excalibur thing

this is 1329 feet high.

and also the 5th tallest free standing tower in the world. so how are they going to make structural sound posts somewhere near that height to suspend the cables?

yea but wtf, what about wind? is this gondala going to have stabilizers on the outside and shapped like a sphere for a low wind/drag coeffcient???

ya but that doesnt matter its not for the winter its more for in the summer to get people buying lift tickets to go up the moutain so they can make lots of cash.

speeeeeeachless. hopefully it doesnt break down or somethin, which im sure it will, i would shit my pants

its pointless absolute waste of founds. its not even hard to go from one mountain to the other, right now. people are too lazy to even ski now.

didn't a plane take out some chairlift in austria or something and kill like 20 people? if that happened you'd have 2000 bodies in the whistler valley. maybe it's just me - i always look at the bad side of things i guess.

so its gonna be the worlds longest span, the worlds highest, and the first of its kind in the world...they ar spending $50 million on it. If they are gonna waste that much money, there better be some damn good skiing underneath...(which there isnt).

The height is also going to draw MSPs base jumpers...its the only thing worth putting it in for.
