Whistler Summer 2k15

Soooo I heard that Whistler has no snow and might start cancelling camps. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not? I head out from Tahoe on Wednesday and I just want to be prepared for heart break.

Look up the Gaper Day videos, that'll give you a good idea what conditions were like 4 days ago. It's going to be a long summer for sure.

while we got less snow in total this year, we have more snow in the alpine than we did last year. below treeline it was warm and rainy most winter, but it stayed fairly good up top. the glacier was in worse shape last year and they still made it work. unless they changed their minds in the past two weeks since i left whist, camps are definitely a go this year.

i just hope COC doesn't have to farm all the snow off of the racer lane, and then force the racers to move to where the public/dave murray jumps go like last year.

follow @momentumcamps on instagram, they just posted a photo of them building huge jumps. that rumour you heard is definitely FALSE

coc just posted on facebook saying for anyone signed up for C and D to contact them asap.

There's heaps of snow up there. The bank details of everyone who paid via card for C and D have been compromised.

Im doing sesh 1 momentum and haven't received an e-mail saying its cancelled so I'm guessing its all ago. and vanular's post too

Yeah people were saying that financial data was stolen, but I saw that too. It doesn't look good.

I was referring to the fact that only two sessions are listed. Don't know anything about prices.

don't want anyone to now besides my friends i am going with but you should tell me how mhssc goes ?

What is your reasoning behind this? Just curious.

Hey Guys!

We just wanted to jump in here and set things straight before rumours start flying about camp this summer.

We can assure you that our camp will run all sessions as scheduled. The lanes where our park is located on the Horstman Glacier received a solid amount of snow this winter. Despite less than favourable conditions on the lower portion of the mountain during the winter, due to its elevation the glacier received a ton of snow - and actually has more than it did last summer.

Check our Instagram (@momentumcamps) to see a shot of the park build that's currently happening - we're excited for you to see what we're creating! Our all-star line-up of coaches are on their way and we can't wait for camp to get started on Friday. It's going to be yet another awesome summer up here at Momentum.

TL;DR: CAMP IS GOOD TO GO! Are you stoked? We're stoked.

TO CLARIFY:

Due to lack of snow, we have decided that our only option to keep a quality product that people will enjoy, is to cancel weeks C and D. It's the right decision for camp when it comes down to concerns of safety and quality. Camp of Champions will still have a quality park for Week A and B that all campers and pros will be stoked on.

Thanks for your support of Camp of Champions!

Why can Momentum stay open longer than you guys?

That decision is up to Momentum.

We just simply don't want to sell anyone a subpar park. We want to give campers what they pay for and what they deserve.

you saying Momentum is in the same situation as coc?

Not according to them at least. It'll be pretty interesting to see how things end up because Momentum are saying they have plenty of snow but COC doesn't think so

I am the head builder at Momentum Ski Camps, I believe in respect and honesty I think it is a pretty big low ball to imply that Momentum will be selling anyone on a subpar park. We are on a higher part of the glacier and have a solid snowpack to work with all summer. Our camp will be six lanes again this summer, twice the size of any other camp on the glacier. We also have a line up of new and creative features this summer and have been fabricating new rails with Arena Snow Parks. I can guarantee to anyone thinking about coming to whistler that my crew and I will be up on the glacier every day and night to make sure that Momentum is the best park it can be. As many people know last year my crew and I stepped up Momentum’s park, this summer it will be similar but with even better flow and a larger rail zone. If anyone has any questions about our terrain park or the glacier shoot me a message and I would love to fill you in with a respectful and truthful response.

ahh excellent so hopefully you guys won't have to rape the racer lane again...public jumps till closing this year?

or even better COC becomes public park?!?!? haha as if that would ever happen.

Yeah that is the exciting part. Even if they tear te park down there will be a lot more space up there for the public park to potentially expand.

I was up there all summer last year and I can see why COC is closing early, their lane just got murked so early in the summer to the point where you couldnt possibly ski out, you had to hike back up and around to get out of their lane. The way the glacier is laid out that never happened at momentum because of the valley that runs to the T-bar (that is the public park) fills with snow which keeps the ski out safe and skiable all summer. Also it just seems like momentum sits in a more favorable spot. Yes it may be a bit steeper, but it allows snow to blow in and fill up the bowl.

I think the 2 sessions COC runs will be fire (Fire emoji) but after that its hard to justify charging kids that much for a hike park, while keeping product quality high enough to not loose all your consumers, ya feel?

This. Thanks Colin!

We didn't mean to offend or imply anything. I can only speak for Camp of Champions, not for Momentum. Nothing personal, no hard feelings.

I remember this being talked about almost as if it was a joke when I was digging in like 2004. Can't believe its actually starting to come to fruition. Could be a total game changer!

Hood better start researching even if they arent a "glaicer".

- Glaciers melting due to climate change

- best use crazy amounts of energy to produce snow to negate melting

- what?

why not just air condition the entirety of Whistler

Whistler Blackcomb generates their own power with a run-of-the-river hydro project. Hydro may not be completely environmentally innocent but it's not producing CO2 and small projects like this have pretty minimal impact.

this is a live webcam of the horseman glacier and they have quite a bit of snow. Momentum is on the left with the large jumps obviously

they'd do better to put their extra hydro back in the grid to offset that amount of oil/gas/coal power.

Their solution really is a 'my house stays really cold in the winter so I'm just going to use the furnace more rather than insulate the house better' solution.

Incorrect. That is COC's lane.

What they are doing is attacking the problem on both fronts. They've got a department of sustainability and invested in the hydro project to do what they can to avoid global warming. But they are also acknowledging that this warming is out of their control and still happening so are doing what they can to minimize how it will effect them. So it's more like adding some insulation to the house but also lighting a fire in the fireplace when they are still freezing to death.

BC already is at 97% hydro/renewable power. Plus the time of year that Whistler is producing excess power to feed into the grid so are the rest of our sources so it often goes to complete waste.

Definitely COC's lane

That might look like a lot right now, but i can tell you from experience that it doesn't last. Do you see the spotiness under the t-bar?

Last week during session D, we closed half of our park and you had to ride over blue glacial ice to get from the COC lane, across the race lane to access the T-bar. Ultimately it is a good choice if the snow levels are really that low. but it sucks for me because I was going to work. and i already have a flight
