Whistler living

Hey everybody! I'll be moving into town September 10th from Montreal to live, work and ski. I don't have anything set up accommodations-wise and am starting the hunt. Anyone looking for a roommate or got a room to rent? Or anyone have a couch I could crash on for a couple days while I find a place?

Also, if you know anyone who fits any of those descriptions, any information helps.

Shoot me a PM if any of that sounds cool and we can discuss ...

If you think this would do better in NSG also let me know.

Take it easy all

Matt

id potentially be interested staying in a place from december - april, cant come any earlier though unfortunately.

thread moved to SG to help OP get a few more views and maybe a sick living situation. bump!

Check Craigslist. Usually find a room or something on there.

Its the dead season so lots of places in hostels. Try the UBC hostel. Super cheap, 16-20 $$ a night.

hope dis helped!

Do not live in staff housing and do not get a job with WB.

If you do either and fuck up (which happens a lot in whistler) you will lose your job house and pass.

Get a job at a restaurant and work at nice to ski all day. Earls, Keg, Mongoli Grill etc.

Good luck!

THIS THIS THIS,

Its just a bad idea, buy your own pass, find your own place, do not count on WB for anything because ive seen people loose or quit their jobs, and they were passless mid season. Wash dishes, live in creekside, Nordic represent.

Have some in pemby and creekside, not sure if they are looking for a roomate but i'll call them.

And like people said, don't work for WB, you won't ski as much as you want. One of my roomate in Revy was workimg for Rmr and I got like 40 more days then him plus like another 5 days more at rogers.

Or just dont be a retard and don't fuck up and a enjoy a free pass, 50% off food on the mountain, 25% off retail, ultra cheap accom options and tons of other incentives... Working for WB is fucking awesome.

This. Working for the hill just makes sense for all the benefits you get. Get a job in a rentle shop and you will also get pro deals and split shifts so you can ride loads.

Meh, not really. WB offered me $8.50 an hour in a rental shop, so I did the math and even if I bought my pass outright it was way better to take a job in an independent shop at $11.00 starting wage (6 months of 35 hour weeks = $2100 extra, even more if I included the pay rise halfway in). I got my pass at 33% off I think, and half of that was refunded by my shop ontop of my paycheck. One free ski setup, another ski/binding/boot deal for $500 straight from Dynastar. I skied 4 full days and two half days every week that winter. And staff housing? No thanks.

Or maybe things have changed since 2005.

^ yeah it's changed a bit. Starting wage is more like 10-11 bucks but I was soon up to 15 before commission. So although some jobs may pay a little more it does not really work out as much better. I never lived in staff was not really down with that but the food discounts are a big thing. Being able to eat hot meals cheap is a big thing when your tired and hungry.

There are certainly good and bad points for mountain versus non mountain but I think the benigits outweigh the bad. I had friends who worked at independent shops and generally they earned less, got less free stuff and had to buy a pass.

So yeah I would still recommend starting by working for the mountain and if you stay decide from there if you want to change.

Very true. All season passes got half price food in 05/06, I think it was outside of 11-2pm at peak season though.

Yeah you get half price on the mountain with a pass, but not in the village, so if your working its very helpful to have a pass.

Started this thread hoping to maybe hook up a sweet living situation with a like minded shredder/s, but all this advice is much appreciated.

Cheers everyone.

Also staff housing is awesome. So many people talk shit about it, I have lived at glacier for the last 3 winters and its awesome, 30 second ski to the village, 2 minute walk to the top of magic chair and staff dinners which are $7.

Sure its small and not exactly luxury living, but for fucks sake, you are a ski bum making $11 an hour! deal with it!!

I just have a question for Whistler residents. Does the "early Bird glacier pass" start working when you buy it? or not till glacier skiing begins (which isn't till mid June or so i think)? Is there a spring pass otherwise? Thanks

Staff housing is never worth anything ever. Don't listen to anyone that says otherwise.

If you like living with people checking your room for "contraband' and not being able to play music after 9pm, for sure go live in staff.

I appreciate the enthusiasm and diversity of opinion displayed in my thread, but I will not be staying in staff housing.

Keep on with the advice and don't hesitate to PM me with updates on any good NS living situations.

good call, ill have a room opening in october, but that doesn't help you. if i were you id try to find a place in white gold, whitstler cay, or blueberry. i'm in white gold now and its awesome for skiing since the wizard lift is right there, which is the fastest way to upload either mountain. your minutes by foot away from the vil at any of those places, so you wouldn't need to fuck with bus passes or anything like that to get to work. they're definitely some of the pricier areas to live, but there are deals out there...apart from staff housing i live closer to the lifts that i ever have, and have my own room in a sizeable house for 475 a month.

Lol you obviously were not very good at hiding what you were doing, foolish child.

What did u do? rock up and in the first week u were there walk around the corridors smoking bongs? Have 4 parties in the first week til 3am? Or were you just a massive cock?

I have lived there for 3 winters and in 1 season i got a fine for smoking indoors which was 100% my own fault and stupidity, but was not enough for me to leave, the place is still dope to live.

Stop being butthurt, you punched a hole in the wall, what did you expect? ;)

Staff was fun! Lived two doors down from those guys^, never had anyone come check on us, so close to the vill, so close to lifts, gondola runs at night so you can do groceries and take the free way home. All in all I could totally live in staff again!

sorry misunderstoood. no 50% with season pass. 50% if your working and take you kids outside the lunch hour or whatever.
