Whistler Glacier Troubles

Yeah, right now they are having meetings at whistler deciding if they will close the glacier early. We had a good snow year, but it wasnt good enough to make up for the dismal snow from last year, and the glacier very small. Right now it is ovious that the high north quarterpipe and table will not be as big, along with any other features that will require alot of snow. Chances are the glacier will stay open for the same time period, since it would be huge hassle to close it early - but it definitley wont be as good as last year.

they should come get some snow from hood.. theres still a grpload and its forcasted to snow this week.....

im so confused? skiing in the summer is on blackcomb? and what do u mean no snow? it's a fricken glacier? also what are u saying closing early?

well i hope its not global warming but i read about these indoor ski places with the slope that moves... kinda like trying to walk down an escelator that goes up... and it sounds like fun. but it will never beat the real thing

last summer at whistler at the bottom of the chair, they had this crappy little treadmill type thing where you strapped on snowblades and you made turns, but you never actually moved. It looked like it really sucked. There was some generic old man on it

Don't overreact man. I live in Whistler and there is still a bunch of snow up there. It definately doesn't look as good as some previous years but the officials are doing well in bringing you the best we have to offer. They may even be making snow up there, this would mean a great summer. So before you get all worried wait until you actually see it.

glaciers grow and get smaller all the time depending on various differnt things... its pretty weird.

yeah, i thought glaciers never melted, but maybe i was wrong......

it would definatly suck if it was shut down early, but i thought there had been skiing up there for years, the chances of one bad year shutting all that down would be very rare wouldnt it?

Just a gentle reminder: a glacier is ice, not snow. You ski on the snow that has accumulated, over the winter, on top of the Horstman and Blackcomb glaciers - which are seriously receeding right now.

Just a reminder, the glacier DOES rely on snow. With no snow, what would you make everything out of. This year there is less snow and that means less glacier. Im sorry if this sounded really bad, at the most it will only cut off last sessions guys. I got word of this from riding the chair with a bunch of people on the national freestyle team, as they are heavily involved with the glacier.

Yes, the glacier is shrinking and it sucks.Every summer there is more and more rock being exposed in the high alpine.....thats why there was no big pipe on whistler this spring......the drought is in full effect and if this weather continues .....severe water shortage in the future......I'm now getting sidetracked a bit, but soon wars will be fought over water ....it sucks

 
its all about accumulation...and thats what the glacier has been lacking apparently.

It's most definately due to CO2 emissions. I just wish there would be more national coverage about global warming even with that new movie out I don't think people are going to listen. People could see the ozone holes so that was proof. Proof with global warming would terrible snowpack, and shorter winters which would suck cause skiing would end. Hopefully if major car companies get into the hybrid thing, they will have to spend the money to sell their product and get the word out about global warming.

Hood has got snow the past two weekends and it may snow again this weekend too..there is still a whole bunch of snow up on palmer glacier. whoever is going to windells this year is going to have a blast

The ozone was caused by excess CFC's in aserol cans and stuff like that. It's different from global warming. Even though CFC's is one of th six greenhouse gases. Hybrid cars could cut the Co2 emmions drastically, but I really dont think people care about global warming.

 
Ozone holes can be repaired. Ozone is a gas (O3. When Clhorine (ie cfc's) interact with it, it breaks into O2 and plain oxygen which result in an 'ozone hole'. With sunlight the molecules bind back together forming O3. That is why the arctic has such big ozone holes because it is dark for 6 months of the year at the poles and the holes cannot heal. Anyway sorry for the rant, but for those who need to know there it is...
