While contemplating the speed of light...

I finally put all the pieces of years of physics together and... i think i finally understand why nothing can travel faster that the speed of light.

It would mess up the space-time continium because things cannot exist in places that they havent been existed in yet. IE: Person shoots you with a gun. Bullet travels 2x Speed of light. You get hit with the bullet before you even see the bullet shooting you.

Crazy shit, dunno if anyone else was confused, cuz ive been for years and now im clarified.

Just because you can't see something doesn't mean that it isn't there, it is just traveling faster than the light that it is emitting, similar to something that is traveling faster than the sound it is emiting. Most bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, you get hit by it before you even hear it. It is no different with light, except that it would hit you before you saw it. Light travel is theoretically possible, but it does affect some things, apparantly from what my astronomy prof told me, time would slow down by a little bit.

what i would really like to understand is the theory of black holes. anyone got any insight into this age old question?

^ It has been physically proven that time does slow down. They put an atomic clock on a 747 and flew around the world. Clock lost a few fractions of a sec. Not to mention your mass increases by 1000000s. Humans could not survive it. Only way it could really happen is if you got sucked in by a black hole and created enough velocity. Even then, you still wouldnt be faster than the speed of light. Sound waves yes, can arrive later, but theyre just that - waves. Were talking about actual atoms.

but time is a just relative term used on our planet. if say someone were traveling out in space, went through a black hole (skip the actual feasibility part) and the 'time' changed, how would that person age. slower, faster? i'm being brief, but i hope you understand what i am saying.

ok, and let me ask one more question that i have been puzzling over as of late.

can you imagine absolutely nothing? and by nothing i mean just that, nothing. there would be no planets, no time, no life, no atoms/quarks/particles whatever, and no color (not even the color black which we associate with 'space'). there would be no space, there would be no room for anything to exist.

can you imagine that? cause i have a really hard time.

I suck at physics. This could be completely wrong. It's just how I remember it.

1. Physical objects cannot travel at the speed of light because in order to do so they would have to become infinitely small in dimension and infinitely gross in mass.

2. Time travel is possible in the sense that time is relative. It's not a "relative term", it's actually relative. If you were to travel at high speeds (say, speed x) to a point a long way from the earth and return in what seemed to you to be 20 years, depending on the speed you were going the earth could have aged, say, 100 years to your 20 during your trip.

That might all be crap, I don't remember. But most of this thread is BS anyway, so...

JD is somewhat correct. Go watch Lost in space. Time slows down... so in the movie... the family travels at near the speed of light, so a few seconds to them is 100 years in earth terms. Thus, the people on earth had progressed more in that 100 years, than it took the family to come back to find the other spaceships. Rent the movie, itll make sense. "TIME" travel can exist, but only in relative terms.

Black holes really aren't hard to comprehend. There is no real mystery about them. They are extremely massive objects- some just a few times more massive than our sun, some more than 30 milliion times more massive than our sun- we know this becuase we can calculate the angular velocity of objects revovling around them and then solve for their mass. Basically, they are so massive that their gravitational pull is so strong that not even photons of light can escape. Becuase of this, we cannot see the black hole itself, but rather its "event horizon" which is the point where the gravity is just weak enough to let the light from objects falling in escape. Also, contrary to popular belief, black holes don't suck everything into them, only objects that are really close, other objects just revolve around them like the planets revovle around the sun. I think that is pretty much the basics of what I remember from my astronomy class. I'm sure that there is more...any questions?

Wavelengths longer than the visible spectrum are infared, and wavelengths shorter than the visible spectrum are ultraviolet. Further off to each side are x rays and gamma rays.

I've been doing some contemplating of my own and realized some crazy shit. Say you could be accelerated to the speed of light instantly. So if you were sitting at a stoplight and were suddenly moving at the speed of light, your surrounding would stay the same. Then if you travelled at faster than the speed of light, things would start moving backwards. Then you could go back to a certain moment and see it, but you couldnt interact with it because that's just the light travelling away from its source. So in my fucked up mind, you could theoretically go back in time if you could move faster than the speed of light and only see what happened, not change it. Damn.

I don't think a black hole leads to anywhere. I think that at the center of it is basically just a chunk of almost infinite mass. So if you go into a black hole, you get crushed really tiny and basically just become part of the black hole.

i read a book about Einstien and Hawkings theories kind of compiled, it talked about the big bang, and they think that our universe is spinning on the axis of a massive black hole that is the size of an atom, but it is really strong, like, if you were going into it head first, you would rip in halves over and over again untill the atoms that make up your body would split, because its strength increases that extremely in that little of increments, it was kinda hard to understand, i was in like 8th grade at the time so that might not all be correct, thats the big bang theory too, is that that black hole "sucked up" everything in the universe, then exploded and sent everything trillions of miles everywhere, and then it started grouping up and forming planets and what not (the dust)

Ok here it is. Youve got four dimensions. The 3 spacial dimensions(up and down, left and right, forward and back) and the dimension of time. You cannot travel faster than the speed of light in these 4 dimensions, not just the 3 spacial ones.

If you travel fast in the spacial dimensions your overall speed cannot exceed the speed of light so you slow down in the time dimension. Making time travel slower.

You cant go backwards in time because if you travel at the speed of light in space you would theoretically stand still in time. You would never go backwards.

There is a problem with travalling at the speed of light in space in that the nearer you get to the speed of light the greater youre mass becomes. Your mass tends towars infinity as you get nearer the speed of light so it becomes impossible for you to actually reach it.

no matter what the speed of an object... it will exist in time and space

therefore, even if its traveling at 2x the speed of light, it still exists, even tho it cannot be seen

and things do travel faster than light. Solar wind gust are over 400,000 feet per second

thats kindof the same as the sound barrier: if you travel at exactly the speed of sound, then drag would then be infinite, but if you only spend a few seconds at exactly that speed, all you get is the sonic boom.

my personal theory is that there are things that travel faster than light but we just cant see it and thus havnt discovered how to measure it

well if something traveled faster than light youd see it sometime....like lets say your at a traffic light then when it turns green a car goes faster than the speed of light. at the speed of light later you would see the cars trail and shit show up or something but jsut frames....i relaly dont know. prollyo you wouldnt see anything thing at all but it would make sense that you would see it some time later

Mass has nothing to do with size. Theoretically, u could have something the size of a golf ball that actually has more mass than the sun(or something else really big). Hence what a black hole is. An extremely large mass in an extremely tiny space.

^ some scientists argure there are something like 8 dementions. and a while back i watched some movie on Hawkings and he basicacally said that our universe started from a black hole and gradually expanded, but after it gets to a point when the center of the universe(a black hole) can no longer expand it will start to contract and one day the universe will be the size of a pin-head, and that process will repeat.

First off, if you have no Quantum physics experience you shouldn't post here because you don't know the physics of the atom nor light.

There is no physical way to travel faster then the speed of light for this reason:

As you approach the speed of light, electrons become excited and jump through their energy levels in the atoms and begin to break apart after they gather enough energy from photons and are able to break free of the atom itself. AS YOU APPROACH THE SPEED OF LIGHT MATTER BEGINS TO BREAK DOWN INTO IT'S SIMPLEST FORMS. Light is simply an elecric field oscillating within a magnetic field and anything traveling the speed of light inherently becomes light and can not reform. Take quantum mechanics classes and it will all make sense.

but do you have to see something for it to happen. if there is absolutely no light and you can see things does that make them not happen. it seems like your theory is based on it not being possible becuase you dont see then bullet, but i sont think that matters

i think i've come up with wat black holes are by reading some of the posts. Black holes in lamens terms are just really big planets with really big gravitational pull that even pull in light so thats why you cant see it. You only see where the light is pulled in which is like a hole in a piece of paper

When you get close to the speed of light, atoms begin to break into the simplest form, and electrons begin jumping valence shells. If you (as a person, or any solid object for that matter) were to reach the speed of light, you would have to be pure energy, or plasma, and therefore you couldn't exist in human form
