Whey Protein.

i've been taking it for the last week in rice milk shakes. I'm recovering from getting my tonsils out so i'm using it so i don't die.

It's pointless to take protein unless you don't get enough in your diet already. Your body can only use 70g of protein per day, sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. You get that in a normal day unless you starve yourself, extra protein just goes to waste, especially when you're taking a ridiculous amount like 26 grams.

Tell me i'm wrong if you want, but i'll trust someone with a degree in health and nutrition more then some kid on the internet.

Protein supplements are NOT useless; however, I will not go to further lengths to disprove you. Rather, I encourage you to educate yourself. Read up on nutritional science and the art of bodybuilding. As for the the thread creator... you can't go wrong with Gold Standard, 100% Optimum Whey Protein.

If you don't plan on disproving me, i don't give enough of a shit to go read up on nutritional science. I like arguing, either prove me wrong or get over it.

Do you realize that since you don't 'give enough of a shit to go read up on nutritional science' you've admitted that you know very little about the subject. Needless to say, if you don't understand the basics of protein synthesis, DON'T respond to the question with unfounded information.

Did you read my first post? I was told by a nutritionist, and i didn't admit to anything, I said that I didn't care enough to go read up on it more. And unfounded information...? Get off your high horse.

are you kidding me? Theres a reason your friend got a degree in nutrition and not something more competitive... I think what he told you was in regards to a normal resting human being. If you're working out and need to repair muscle cells, you need 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. In fact, within 30-45 minutes after a workout, the human body can digest about 37 grams of protein all in one serving.

Protein holds amino acids which are crucial to the recovery of the formation of new muscle cells. If you are a resting human being, not causing microtrauma to your muscles, you will not be needing those amino acids. Put another way, you don't need any extra protein to repair muscles that aren't damaged. But if you are damaging your muscles you obviously need more. The reason you need 70grams in the first place is because muscle tissue requires calories and protein to exist in and of itself.

ok, first thing i want to say about it is that Iit does not taste bad. i dont kno about any other flavors, but whenever i buy whey protein, i always get chocolate and mix it with water and it tastes fine.

it works alright if you just want to be getting more cut and lean muscle, and dont listen to anyone that says that shit gets you fat, because they either dont know what theyre talking about or they dont know how to work out. whey protein is supposed to get you cut and lean muscle. if you want something that will really get you bigger and help you gain more weight, you should be taking something with more calories, protein and carbs.

ive been taking whey protein for a while now and i honestly dont think it helps much, but it does help a little bit i guess. if you buy from GNC, all you need is one scoop(which is equivalent to 1 serving) for every 8 oz of water. it even says it on the jar.

if you really want to kno a lot more about supplements though i suggest you pm jay_dope on ns. he knows just about everything about supplements and lifting.

oh and to the thread creator, whey protein is just a supplemental source of protein in case you can't get 1-2 grams per lb of body weight. In fact, if you aren't looking to get too many calories, it would be beneficial to take whey cuz if you mix it with water, its relatively low in calories. Whey is the second best source of protein due to good digestibility. the best source is cassein which is found in eggs.

Protein is essential in muscle rebuilding if you are working out. if you aren't working out, theres no need to take it.

I suggest Optimum 100% whey gold standard.

Nobody cares what your uncle told you yesterday or what some nutritionist told you last week. I'm telling you that the information the nutritionist provided you with is wrong. You suffer from the armless waitress syndrome... you bring nothing to the table. If you can't offer the the thread some original thoughts, and in this case accuracy also applies, then don't post!

You obviously know a lot more then i do. It was actually a nutritionist i had for when i was lifting for soccer, so you're probably right because it was mostly leg and core training, and only about half an hour each session. It was also a few months ago.

And mogulman.... are you still talking?

Just straight up drinking protein shakes won't do anything. Your muscles require protein to build and maintain themselves. You have to actually excercise (excercise? what the fuck is that?!) in order to put all that protein you consume to use!

Whey protein is a great nutritional supplement. I use it to make smoothies, usually if I don't have the stomach or ability to eat a real meal. It keeps me full and healthy so I'm not so starved I resort to twinkies. As a body building tool, it works just dandy. I gain muscle really quickly though so I don't use it after workouts. Anyone who says protein doesn't work, doesn't work out.

i take it. double chocolate. its pretty tasty. although i started taking it as soon as i started working out so who knows how much of my muscle is result of it.

it def makes you less sore the next day after lifting. and it really doesnt taste that bad.

i work at a smoothie shop and we have this stuff and in some smoothies (like choclate vanilla those kind of flavors) its delish and in others(like fruit flavors) it tastes like shit, and i'm pretty sure its the vanilla flavored protein which i've tried

Protein/Creatine 101...

Protein, as mentioned, has amino acids that help repair muscles quicker. Ideally, if working out, you want to be taking one gram of protein per pound that you weight (for example, I weigh 180lbs., Ideally I want to be taking in about 160-180 grams of protein a day). DO NOT overdue it and take more than necessary as your are just going to overwork your kidneys and that will be no fun for the future. Whey protein is pretty natural and has no side effects, it jsut helps you balance your diet throughout the day. If you are NOT working out and taking whey protein, more than likely you will become fat (no joke).

Creatine will help you produce muscle mass. Simply put, if you want to get bigger, creatine will help. Do I recommend it, yes and no...Creatine, although helpful when you take it, doesn't help much in the long run. When I took creatine, it did help me get bigger, stronger, and cut but once I came off the creatine it was noticeable over a couple of weeks that the results weren't holding up. You will lose muscle size. A couple of things to know when taking creatine, do not try to take more than 5-10 grams a day, take 5 grams or so on off mornings, and make sure you eat or take plenty of carbs when you take creatine to help break it down. Like I said, it depends what you're looking for, but I personally don't take creatine anymore and have done perfectly fine on whey protein alone.

So finally, here are my recommendations...Whey protein is an amazing way to balance your diet. If you think it tastes gross, well then you just need to find the whey protein for you. There are TONS of manufacturers and flavors. I personally LOVE Muscle Milk...they have a wide abundance of flavors, my favorite being chocolate caramel swirl. Tastes great in water, even better with milk. If you are looking to take creatine, go to GNC and buy a tub of GNC brand Creatine Burst. It gives you the dose you need along with the necessary carbs.
