Where would you rather work? Ferrari or Aston Martin?

I am a mechanic and have been extended a formal job offer from Aston Martin but also have a spoken job offer from Ferrari. Both require me to move from my city which is fine. The Ferrari manager has been away in Italy for LaFerrari training so I have not been able to get a hold of him for the last 2 weeks or so but in that time Aston Martin has pretty much said I am exactly what they are looking for and want me to start ASAP. Would you wait it out a bit longer to talk to Ferrari or would you just accept the job from Aston Martin.

The thing is both of the dealerships have pro's and con's that come with them. I have had job interviews with both dealers and both of the managers seem like very stand up guys and both seem to really like me. The major downfalls with Ferrari are the lack of support as they have no foremen to deal with issues on cars that you cannot resolve which is OK for me since I have worked the last 5 years without a foreman at VW/Porsche. Ferrari is also a much smaller shop with less job security due to lack of work. Aston Martin's group of guys seem like a good bunch, I had a chance to meet with all of them after my interview and they all were quite receptive to me being there which is rare for a "new guy" in a shop.

I also work for a guy locally who has a 997 GT3 cup car that he races out of California, PNW, and Utah which is very important for me to keep since it is beyond difficult to get your foot in the door with a motorsports team so the experience from my friend is worth its weight in gold. Aston Martin loved the idea of me having motorsports on my resume as well where as Ferrari seemed a bit more hesitant because he warned it gets "busy" in the summer which might not allow me time away to travel with my friend and race with his gt3.

Honestly this is the mother of first world problems but what would you do? Take the Aston job and run? Keep in mind both jobs pay roughly the same but are less than what I am making now. You take a bit of a pay cut to work on supercars which is slightly bizarre but they have no problems filling the positions. These jobs hardly ever open up to public application, it is more of who do you know and who can you poach from other shops/ dealerships.

That's a strange problem to have. It sounds like I would take the Aston job, but I really don't know the industry well enough to make a fair assessment of the pros and cons.

So what's the con of the Aston Martin job? It seems better across the board to me, unless you just prefer working on Ferraris or think that it would place you better for later career advancement.

Ferrari factory training is the holy grail of mechanics. That little bit of information on a resume can open many doors for a mechanic.

The cons of Aston Martin is that it is not Ferrari. They do service off warranty Ferrari though, so you can get experience but no factory training.

Aston Martin is no slouch either, having factory training from Aston on a resume will really prop it up.

Is more of my taste. I have my foot in the door for sports car racing and that is my passion. Fixing road variant versions of the cars is just a perk to pay bills for now.

Sports car racing pays next to nothing so you have to have back up plans, haha.

Based on the first line, I'd go with ferrari( if it were me). Since you have a whole career ahead of you, an attractive job title like ferrari mechanic could really send you places. Not to say Aston Martin wouldnt either

Personally I would go with ferarri, just seems like it would be more impressive on a resume in the long run, and come on you get to work on new ferarris all day, that would be dope as fuck

Thanks for all the input so far. I am going to meet with my friend who owns the gt3 cup car for lunch and he is going to chat with me about everything as well. It is hard to decide between the two since in a normal circumstance you would never have to make a choice between the two, haha.

The thing with Ferrari techs, there is likely less than 30 in all of Canada so the job does not come available very often. Aston Martin is roughly around 40 tech across the country so it is very similar to the Ferrari numbers as well.

I just dont want to step on Aston Martins toes since they have formally sent all the paper work and such for me to sign on with them. It was just unfortunate that the manager of Ferrari was away at the time this all went down. In the end, working at Aston will help secure a job at Ferrari in the future if they become available in the future.

The bonus of Aston Martin is that they recently dumped a bunch of money into their sports car racing programs and have upped their support for private teams as well. This bodes well for me to go to England in the future to work for a team based out of the UK since Canadians do not need a work visa to work in England for 2 years.

Either route I go down will be a win-win, it is almost silly to sit here and pine over possibly not working at one of the 2 super car companies. I am beyond ecstatic to have any chance at either of the brands.

Ha ahhh the difficulty of an embarrassment of riches.

If I were you, I think I'd still go with Aston Martin. I understand the Ferrari factory training being a big draw, but it sounds to me that your real passion is sports car racing. It sounds like working for Aston Martin is more likely to let you continue doing that (and possibly moving forward with it).

It might be different if you were working at Joe's Auto on Corner Street over taking Ferrari factory training, but Aston Martin is a big deal as well (you can judge better than me how they're weighted in your industry). If you can get a very good job that lets you continue with your passion, I'd probably take it over a slightly more professionally beneficial job that is more likely to get you off track with what you love.

Aston Martins are the sickest Cars and are totally on the rise man! If this was the 80's or 90's i would totally say Ferrari but trust me, anyone who can afford it these days are getting the Aston Martins

id go with the aston martin job personally. sounds like they really like you and what you bring to the table, and have been much more responsive.

You should also let Aston Martin know of your situation, let them know you have a possible offer from ferrari. Odds are they might offer you some better benefits in hopes that you stay.

Aston Martin. Don't they make aviation engines as well?

how much dough are you making? i'm curious

My dad has a ferrari never been or driven an austin but really not a huge fan of the cars. Very expensive, performance isnt really close, and they are much more of an upscale touring car vs a serious sports car.

The ferrari dealerships are absolutely unreal. Top notch service and the one we go to opens up the entire dealer including the mechanic area to check out and see what is going on. The ferrari mechanics have all been there for like 20 + years and love their jobs. The equipment they use is insane and they get to drive cars all the time.

Up to you man but for a slight pay cut and a little less freet ime to race your gt3 you have a top notch employer on your resume in your field. Cant really beat that. A little sacafice now for a whole lot of opportunities down the road

My dad has all the ferraris, my dad also owns two boats and 2 planes, my dad owns the Dallas cowboys, my dad owns your dad.

Ferrari bc it's the holy grail of cars. Ferrari will look better on a resume compared to Aston (although it would look great also).

Go for the Aston Martin job. I'm biased because I'm a big Aston Martin fan.

Either way, congratulations on getting these stellar offers!

f430....cars insane to drive so dam fast and the paddle shifters are so quick pretty nice not to have to shift old school though it always is kinda weird considering I grew up driving a vw with a stick shift.

update: I signed a contract to work for Aston Martin. They offered to pay me a signing bonus to pay for moving expenses and a little extra for my troubles.

Overall very excited to be part of their team.

Congrats dude! From one car enthusiast to the next, I gotta say you're living the dream. Enjoy the experience

Great work buddy. I'm actually torn between a v12 vantage and an F car right now... Hit me up and we'll talk. Would love to know your thoughts mechanically. Both would be 2011 models or later.

I live in the richest country and in the world and let me tell you 'anyone who can afford it' is buying Ferrari, not Aston. Ferrari's are notably more popular amongst the super rich than Aston Martin's. Not to say Aston's aren't wonderful and popular cars, but you're talking BS if you think Ferrari is falling out of favour.

To the OP, congrats man!! You must have one of the coolest jobs of everyone on NS! Enjoy..!

Congrats, if you really want to be in motorsports then you did the right thing picking a company that will be cooperative with you working on that GT3 car, just curious are you just doing mechanicing?

I creeped on your profile and I gotta say you have good taste in cars. C63 is a beast of a machine, best sounding v8 out of Germany Imo.

ha - that's my old one. I have a 2012 P31 C63 coupe right now... i love them. Go through tires mind!
