Where will the gitmo bay detainees go?

so i read this article in the paper today...yes obama is closing down gitmo...awesome. but where are all the detainees gonna go? from what i read many of the countries involved want nothing to do with there old country men who have been deemed terrorists and detained they want none of them back in there country. what is the US gonna do? release them to cuba? send them to aussie land? force them to be held in there country? whats gonna happen!!!

i think it is a great start but in a year gitmo will be closed, cuba will have a million upon million upon million dollar prison and then all the prisoners...

my optimistic side says they should send them to the jail in the countries that they were caught in and tried in their courts. if there isn't enough evidence then i guess they have to let them go. how many are in gitmo? what are another few fish in big terrorist pond. they will most likely end up getting killed anyways when they rejoin their jihad.

my cynical side says...thing is gitmo has become a symbol more then a place. if they shut it down people will be happy, but then they will just send the terrorists to one of the many other secret prisons that the US has around the globe.

Hopefully they'll be put through our legal system, given a fair trial, be declared guilty or innocent, and be let free or do prison time, probably in the US. As for their release if found innocent, why not return them to the country of orgin?

Send give them each a small backpack full of crude survival gear, and dump them right in the middle of Antarctica. Let Darwin sort this out.

theres is only about 500 and some change but these guys are the bad of the most bad. it is crazy.

That will be cheap.

Let's be realistic. I'm all for due process, but when we are talking about some guy we know for a fact is a human version of Satan I would feel like an idiot sending him to trial in the US. And what country wants to let the US drop off a couple of hundred Guantanamo Bay detainees on their doorstep?

How do you know for a fact that these guys are who you say they are? Thats like the police coming over to you taking one lookand saying " i know for a fact you are a drug dealer because you're in this neighborhood with drugs, and you look like all the people i think are dealers. Therefore i'm throwing your ass in prison -- we can skip going to court or any of that expensive shit 'cause i just know."

There are people in there who said they were American sympathizers who hated the Taliban/Al Queada. There are teenagers in there who could have just had one of those wrong place at the wrong time kinda days. Now they're being tortured.

Even if we've got people we 'know' are dogs, we can't just decide they're a special case and disregard what our constitution says. And if theres a situation where we can't prosicute particular individuals because the evidence against them was obtained via water tourture or something like that-- the only person to blame is Bush for being so weak and letting this happen.

When our boys got waterborded over in Japan, we hanged the people resposible... Why aren't we going to see Bush go to the gallows?

how on earth do you KNOW they are the human version of satan. people have the right to a fair trial. period. regardless of who they are.

usually i stay out of these, simply because the majority of the people discussing these issues on this website have no comprehension of how the political system works.
first of all, the constitution applys to CITIZENS only. So i dont know why your even bringing it up.Furthermore, these are now POW's covered under the geneva convention. The US soldiers tortured in Japan were covered by this convention, thus the Japanese broke international law, and were able to be punished.
Bush broke no laws, as these terrorists are not part of a larger state sanctioned operation, have no set heirarchy or ranking system, are considered "Enemy Combatants" and are protected under no level of international treaty.

and just so I don't sound like a deuchebag I'm just completing a degree in Politics and Governance.
Bush did break in some people's eyes "ethical' boundarys. However he is no war criminal.
one more thing, You Americans all complain constantly about gitmo and how harsh you are on terrorists... but then get attacked, and blame your government for not doing all it could. I guess what im saying is torture justifys saftey, Bush's policies, however ethically flawed, did keep the USA safe from further terrorist attacks despite 4 other attacks happening globally during his stay in power.
something to think about

As a nation that prides itself on being fair and just, I dont think that cost should be the overriding factor of whether or not these men are given the same basic rights we afford to any other human. Sure, it would be easy to unfairly demonize them and execute the whole lot, but I just think our 'civilized' country can do better.

And as for their release, why not return them to their country of origin?

I really think we should build a nice big jail right in downtown Hollywood, or right across the street from Rossie O'Donnell's house I doubt she'd mind, at least they would be getting a fair trial right?

you know what is so conveniently left off the history books and pushed to the backs of people's minds..

answer me this, what did Roosevelt do to people of Asian decent living in the US?.... you aint got shit on bush. sending AMERICAN citizens to, for all means and purposes PRISON camps... but no, he's one of our best presidents in history, god forbid you say anything about that kind old soul.

how would you feel if those kindly old souls known as TERRORISTS were sent to a prison near you?

how about we talk about who dropped the Atomic bomb on Hiroshima... lets send that man to the gallows before we sent bush to the gallows for what is it again, water boarding?

bush asked for them to be re located here i think because our government was stuck up bush's arse and we have a fair amount of afghans coming over here, but our new government told bush to fuck off and it wasn't our problem but i think if obama asks we will think about it again because we want to get in tight with the new U.S goverment.

very very true.

If we bring them here to the U.S (which we will because nobody else wants to take them, and i don't blame them), we should but them right in the middle of all these people that want them to have rights, right in the middle of the liberal capital, right in the middle of all these people running their mouth trying to convince the world that we are evil. if you have not figured it out yet im talking about San Francisco.

the problem with the insane left is that it makes them feel good to close Gitmo. we dont know where we are going to put them but it makes them feel good that we are doing something about it. they never pose a solution, only bitch about what they perceive is going on.

here is my solution.

re-build Alcatraz and put all the prisoners on the island. that way they will not be thrown into the our general prison population and in all probability killed.

Give them nothing, no TV, no gym, no mats to pray on, now Koran to read, no 4 or 5 square meals a day. however, if we must, give them a fair trial while they are their (all tho i dont believe they should get any).

lets put them at the front of Nancy Polski's playing field and then we will see what the left are rambling about.

just to be an ass.... does this mean your penis is incredibly small?

the constitution doesnt apply to the detainees at gitmo. like an above poster said, it only applies to citizens. i say, send them to brazil, prick all their fingers so they are bleeding a little, and then drop them into pirahna infested waters.

Ok. so to all you people saying let them die, kill them, etc.

There is absolutely no possible way to know that anyone we are holding is guilty. period.

now, i am aware that since they are not citizens our legal system does not apply to them. HOWEVER, what is the RIGHT thing to do?

We are supposed to be a fair, free country. Nothing says fair and free like throwing people into prison indefinitely, or executing them, regardless of whether they have had a fair trial or not.

Are we necessarily required to? not really. but its the right thing to do.

The supreme court acutally decided that enemy combatants are subject to protections under the geneva conventions. The Geneva convention also has a no torture clause, and water boarding is clearly torture. So maybe international law was broken.

here you go again trying to soften one persons actions by comparing them to far worse

but lets talk about what hangs on his shoulders

1. torture -- forgivable by your standards, i'll accept it

2. spying on everyone -- maybe you don't care but at least it is something that happened to you

3. And if he really fabricated why we went to war in Iraq he bears responsibility for every US soldier dead -- that you can't forgive him for.

I appreciate the clarity on why 'enemy combatants' are a loop hole, but it doesn't seem to be a strong argument for at least two reasons; 1. Anyone can be declared a enemy combatant thanks to the PA -- thus everyone is subject to torture 2. http://www.un.org/documents/ga/res/39/a39r046.htm

Have any of you put yourselves in the shoes of any other nation, and the perception they have of us?

o please, it was that bastard bush who "spyed" on us. try adding 98 senators to that list also. o wait, the dumb hillbilly bush was somehow the mastermind behind it all.

Americans play to win at all times. I wouldn't give

a hoot and hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans

have never lost nor ever lose a war.

George S. Patton

No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

George S. Patton

isnt it scary where we were at one point, to where we have come to now... ^^^

o and 77 senators voted YES on the iraq war resolution... along with 296 reps...
