Where to move

I currently live around the corner from West Mountain in NY, but take the extra drive up to Gore each weekend.

I want to move to either Vermont or New Hampshire after college (staying east coast 100%), and want to be fairly close to a city, nice sized yard, 2+ acres, but still be able to get to a decent sized hill in less than 30 mins.

I was thinking Londonderry area because 10 minutes to bromley, 4 minutes to Magic, and 45 to Okemo, but it might be a little far south for me. Anyone know some nice towns up near Sugarbush/ Mad River Glen /Stowe?
 
Live in Burlington and have access to smuggs, jay , Stowe, Bolton valley for night skiing, sugarbush and mrg. It's probably the best location ski wise other than North Conway nh. If want to be closer to the ski areas either Stowe or Waterbury, Stowe is a rich town Waterbury not as rich but has amazing food and beer. Depends what you do for work and if you want nightlife etc, in Burlington you have a city with better jobs, nightlife, and it sits on a humongous lake that will be great in the summer . The skiing out of Burlington is a lot better than North Conway .

North conway is honestly a really cool place... im forgetting the name of the mtn in the town but its a fun little place that you would be right next to, and if you wanted to go to a bigger mtn there are lots right around

North Conway is beautiful, the mountain is cranmore, not a big mountain at all and very little expert terrain if any. Great backcountry skiing the next peak over on peaked mountain but cranmore won't keep any good skier satisfied very long.

North Conway is a tourist town, not really any nightlife whatsoever besides a few decent bars that close by 11 pm. If you move there solo it's REALLY difficult to meet new friends. The local scene is very tight knit, lots of rednecks, bear hunters , deer hunters and 24/7 camo wearing types .

However the town is amazing in the summer, endless hiking, swimming holes , rivers , you name it .

As for skiing it's within an hour of Sunday river , wildcat, attitash, loon, cannon, Shawnee peak, black mountain, bretton woods , and obviously cranmore. So it's a good jump off to lots of ski areas , and it's right by mount Washington and tuckermans ravine , so backcountry skiing options are a plenty .

Listen to this guy he knows more than me Ive only been once for a day or two sounds like a place that could fit some people perfectly but I don't kno if your one of those people

I am assuming you are a young college graduate looking for a "real" job (not ski bumming job) so bear with me here.

Because you are going to be looking for a corporate (white collar) job, your best bet is look into the towns surrounding Burlington or Montpelier. This includes Winooski, Essex, Colchester, Jericho, Underhill, Charlotte, Hinesburg, St. George, Richmond, Bolton, etc. for Burlington, or Berlin, Barre, East Montpelier, Waitsfield, Warren, Duxbury, Moretown, Fayston, Northfield, or Roxbury for Montpelier.

These towns will not have great night life, but if you are close to Burlington you can take a taxi/uber in and out of the city relatively easily. I do not know what Montpelier is like at night, so I cannot comment on that.

One thing to keep in mind is that the closer you live to a resort, the higher taxes you are likely to pay. A VT resident may be able to explain why, but it has to do with taxes and public education funds (I believe).

If you live in one of those surrounding towns you are close to MRG, Stowe, Sugarbush, Smuggs, Bolton, and Middlebury Snowbowl.

If you do not need a corporate job, just pick a town north of Montpelier and south of St. Albans.
 
I think people on here addressed the problems with North Conway and Burlington. Neither would be bad. But you might as well find something close to the hill as possible and be a shorter drive you don't have to live IN those cities. THere will be tons of cheap spots inbetween one of those towns and whatever hill you want to ski at.
