Where do you get your news online?

Wondering which online sources everyone uses to get their news. I'm a bit of a news junkie, so here's my list. I'll often read stories on the same events from both left and right-leaning outlets, in order to try to gain a balanced perspective.

I often start off with news.google.com for a general overview of the day's highlights, although their sorting is frankly atrocious.

Nytimes.com and washingtonpost.com are go-tos, although their paywalls limit the number of free articles you can read per month, and lately WaPo articles are so obviously politically slanted (anti-Trump) as to make them more propaganda than news.

NPR.org has quality content, I often listen to their hourly news broadcast — as an American living abroad, it makes me feel a bit like being home. However, the liberal slant is a bit annoying over time.

Politico.com is really good for balanced political coverage.

For deeper, mostly objective reads, lately I've really been enjoying the website of The Atlantic. The New Yorker also has great writing, until the paywall hits.

Longform.org is also a great resource for those who like to read longer articles.

Quartz (qz.com) often provides unusual, interesting takes on less-covered events and trends. Hit-and-miss on relevance and topicality.

Slate.com is a good touchstone for general, if left-leaning, news. Thedailybeast.com falls into the same category. In the far-left corner, we've got MotherJones.com for environmental and political coverage.

For conservative viewpoints, NationalReview.com is the "classical conservative" go-to; and if you want to peer under the hood at the raw id of alt-right nationalism, there's always Breitbart.com. Fox News if I need a good laugh. Thedailycaller.com also delivers a raw look from the conservative side.

For international news, BBC.co.uk is a good starting point. I also like to get the central European perspective with Sueddeutsche Zeitung (sueddeutsche.de) and Neue Zürcher Zeitung (nzz.ch) (German-language).

At RT.com, you can get the perspective that the Russian government would like you to have on the world.

The Chicago Tribune and L.A. Times also often have very good pieces.

Prize for worst regional news outlet goes to OregonLive.com. How they could have screwed up The Oregonian so badly, I'll never know.

So what great news outlets am I missing out on?

Dailywire

Ben Sharipo has been my go to guy when I want the cold hard facts. His reporting is really dry and he talks fast. So I only check his station if there is a pressing issue that I need more info on.

Otherwise I enjoy things like Last Week Tonight. I sometimes check out reddit, NS can have stuff that relates to my interests. I have actually been browsing news articles on my iPad. The news app has all the mainstream corporations. You need a subscription to read the articles, but the headlines give me enough.

Of those that are mentioned, I like NPR and NYT. For 'conservative' views I prefer WSJ, if that counts. To add to the above, FiveThirtyEight for polling and elections news/analysis (plus the comments sections for feedback/criticism about their methods).

I don't like Ben Shapiro. I think the cult of personality around him is overstated and counterproductive (re videos like: "Ben Shapiro EVISCERATES liberals" - who cares?). This sums up my opinions pretty well:https://static.currentaffairs.org/2017/12/the-cool-kids-philosopher

That was a massive tl;dr. I skimmed and yeah he usually is aggressively attacking the left. Which is why I like it. The left is full of "you hurt my feelings I need a safe space" reporting and he can take apart the logic of their arguments. I think he can remove the emotion behind these issues so you can look at them in a more logical sense. Just like everybody else he has some openers that are meant to grab the audience for good or for bad.

Yeah, that Current Affairs article is way long, but the point is that he doesn't actually take apart logic or dabble in facts at all. I don't disagree that there's plenty of poorly aimed outrage these days, but Ben Shapiro is nothing more than a fast talker full of bullshit and hypocrisy.

Best source of news = NS

OP I agree Oregonlive is wack but not as bad as what happened to the Statesman Journal down here in the valley. Still check those out because not a lot of decent local reporting anymore.

I ended my Washington Post subscription after one day where every story on the front page was about Trump. Maybe I will come back when they start writing about something else, their student subscription is a hell of a deal.

CBC, globe and mail, and Toronto Star for the left.

National Post for right. I don’t even pick up the Sun....they are all opinion and just pander to the uninformed.

Also I pick up on the Al Jazeera English for some Middle East info, and BBC world service.

I try as hard as I can to keep it as balaenced as possible but to be honest the only right wing service worth talking about is the national post. I’m so tired of populists just manipulating people from both sides. How in the age of unlimited information do we still have to deal with misinformation?

Also...shitty baby boomers. Honestly the amount of times I have to correct my mom, and she gets her news from Facebook. These people are also the voting majority....brutal.

But he supports all of his opinions with facts so I dont understand how you have came to that conclusion.

He often supports his pre-existing opinions by either misrepresenting, misquoting, or cherry-picking facts that support his position rather than opening his perspective to see a bigger picture. He does not demonstrate a nuanced understanding about anything. His treatment of "hard facts" is far too cavalier for someone claiming to be an intellectual.

USA TODAY. Their app is free and good for the most part if you know how to navigate through promoted stories and click bait videos. They have breaking news alerts which is nice too.

Fox news. I like to get my politica fair and balanced.i used to check cnn but can't stand the liberal agenda. Infowars brings up a lot of good points to. When I don't have time to click and read articles I just go by facebook memes. If it's got enough likes and comments on facebook it's a pretty safe bet that it's factual.

I prefer NYTimes and BBC, when it comes to official news and in general I wanna know what's happening in the world. However, when I have time to rest, I appreciate reading some articles about motivating personalities. The last personality I've read about was LaWanda Page on https://news.amomama.com/189849-lawanda-pages-life-eventual-death-playin.html. I decided to check info about this woman owing to the fact that I had remembered Sanford and Son(television hit series). She was known as Aunt Esther- my favorite character from this tv series. This article was like remembering childhood and reminiscing on those times when I was reckless and cared for, lol. I just loved this article. If you were a fan of this tv series, you need to see that!

I've been hitting up Drudge Report most of the time recently. I like that they post stuff from any and every news outlet out there (Imo that's the only way to get a well rounded view of a subject, read about it everywhere and from both side).

And say what you want about Matt Drudge, but he doesn't write the articles that the site agrigates.

If you are only getting your news from one source you're doing it wrong.

at the risk of sounding selfish/ignorant

I get my news from the people directly around me and my local government cause I don't give a shit about the rest of the world.

is my town on fire? will it be later this summer? when are the tourists coming back? is it safe? when can I go camping? where can I camp? what do you mean they are closing my street all summer so people can walk around? WILL THE DRIVETHRU-LESS MCDONALDS ACROSS THE STREET OPEN SOON?

mine collapse in a 3rd world country? american government drone bombing civilians again? guy shoots 5 people in a mall for no reason?

all important news, but if it doesn't affect me directly I filter it out. I payed attention to world wide news for 2 weeks at the start of this pandemic, but when we "closed" officially as a province and the park I live in, it's all about me again babeyyyy

if I want to feel sad I will just drink and listen to music thanks. and when people bring "news" up in a bar or something, the less you know the better because that guy is probably just looking to start an argument.

Reuters and Politico are easy to get the actual news from, and I like to read Wall Street Journal as well. I read NY Times and listen to The Daily by them to try to get a more liberal slant, but since Covid-19 took over their material has been more frustrating.

For the most part, these last few years I've been listening to liberal outlets turn literally any story into an anti-Trump campaign and conservative outlets pretend like Trump has never made a mistake. It's fucking exhausting reading the news anymore, people like Ben Shapiro can literally make a living correcting poor reporting and agendas under the guise of news.

NS demo political logic makes so much sense now

I like the daily wire. My dad watches fox on cable when I go to my parents but I honestly can’t watch it because it’s mostly just yelling.

CBC is a good trustworthy source. Global News is a good alternative. My local paper is always worth a read. I enjoy VOX, but they have a leftist take on events.
