im looking for places to live on craigslist. from what ive gathered i can live in south lake tahoe and ski heavenly and have a more touristy area with more bars in stuff. or i can live in truckee or tahoe city or something and ski alpine meadows and boreal. im kind of feeling the north side more, but there are alot more houses available in south lake tahoe.

i really want to ski as much powder and gnarly bc as i can. i would want the party scene of south lake but i would have to get a fake id because im only 20

any advice is much appreciated

also, does anyone kow of a good room that they could hook me up with?

Skiing is better around North lake for BC and pow. Alpine, Squaw and Sugarbowl are great for classic sierra Nevada skiing. Unless you live in south lake and are willing to drive an hour plus to get to kirkwood. Plus you have to give Truckee house parties credit, they can be far crazier then any bar. But I'm sure that probably goes for any mountain town. What are you doing for work? Working at a resort? Because that does play a major factor.

North shore is where the real skiers live. Ever heard of a pros from South lake? So many pros are from north lake, theres a reason.

Truckee's the place. South Lake doesn't compare for the skiing, and many skiers know that, therefore there are many skiers in their 20s in north lake. Truckee.

I would say south lake if you want nightlife and good riding. kirkwood is kinda far but only like 40mins..not hour+. only takes a lil over a hour to get to any northshore resorts in winter. northshore has some great resorts but not as much as some people claim. I've been here for 6+ years and i came from WAY steep resorts in WA. as far as Heavenly goes I would partly agree, Yes there is more tourists from time to time but not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I've been to other resorts like squaw, seirra and N* and been WAY worse, just depends on when you hit it and most of the tourists stay away from park chairs. On the + side of tourists is there WAY more night life in south lake, so or not stuck in a cabin doing nothing at night. but those other resorts are fun... we'll see how squaw is now that there 2 main park guys (manager and grooming super) are no longer there... Heavenly does have some good freeriding and some steep but not as much as others. its more of a well rounded resort in my eyes... like northstar is more of a park resorts, squaw more steeps, etc. just really depends on what you want in a resort and town. hope this helps-TPC

40 minutes if its clear and sunny. It WILL take over an hour, if not 2 plus if you drive there when you would actually want to ski at Kirkwood, in the snow!

yeah if your trying to beat the plows, ive been there a ton of times and has only taken 40-50mins with fresh snow for opening chairs. but yeah i could see if the roads are bad or not plowed yet taking that long. still worth it either way :)

Kind of depends on what you are looking for and what you like to ski. You can't really make a bad choice.

I grew up skiing heavenly and I will always love it there. so many places to go and explore, and despite what people say, there is some great steep stuff. the parks have really come a long way too... tons of variety! I personally don't care for the night life in south lake, its fun if you are with friends, but I always feel like there are a lot of creepy people out.

I would personally move to North lake. If you like big moutain stuff, ski squaw or alpine. Sugarbowl can be really fun too, smaller mountain, less crowds, pow stays untracked a little longer. If you like park, I recommend boreal and alpine.

I'd personally rather live in south lake, but ski in north lake... so its a pain in the ass dilemma.

There is definitely more job opportunity in south lake than north lake - way more businesses, that stay open later, lots more people, twice as much going on, and all. If you go there, you're going to find a job - unless you're a dimwit and dont know how to find one, or are just a stoner kid who shows up 20 minutes late to all of his interviews... Plus, heavenly is RIGHT freaking there, no matter where you really live... and Sierra and Kirkwood are not all that far away really. Sierra's pretty dang close, and no farther from South Lake than Squaw and Alpine are from Kings Beach (by Tahoe City) or Tahoe Donner (by Truckee) It's not super steep, but it gets legit snow amounts, has a pretty cool park setup, and has some gates for sidecountry. Theres some real fun trees and stuff too. Kirkwood on a pow day is also pretty epic because, you're going to get pow all day long, and they open everything at the same time for the most part - or at least by 10am. Squaw and Alpine can be a bit annoying in that they dont always open everything up at the same time, and you end up running around to lifts that aren't going to open and its all a big tease.

North lake? There are a few more resorts in north lake. Northstar. Homewood. Squaw, alpine, boreal, and sugar bowl. There are not quite as many jobs, but there are definitely more resort jobs if thats definitely what youre looking for. The people up there are definitely WAY more into skiing and snowboarding, although... you're still going to get good vibes from either side of the lake. There is still a lot of tourist trap things going on though, especially at Northstar. 89 and 267 can get mad clogged, as they are the only ways to get into Alpine and Squaw, or Northstar respectively, from either Truckee in the north, or Kings Beach, Tahoe City in the south. They are one lane, and can be kinda crappy from time to time, but i'd say they'll only fail you if you're not on them early enough I guess, so be up at 6am on those pow days, get to the resort, and get some food and warm up.

The other good thing about northlake, is that if you want to go have some nightlife, its not like reno's all that far... its half an hour away, and not as sketch as some people say it is (vegas has been way more scary to me haha). Plus, if you get too drunk there, then there are hotels in town that are sometimes stupid cheap... like 25 a night for a single bed if its like thursday or something... thats unbelievably cheaper than a cab ride home. (i've inturned some drunk friends down there once, and it was much better than having them risk driving, or paying for their cab driver or something to take them home lol) Reno also has the airport right there, so you can fuck off to some other place from time to time to shred other mountains, and not be an hour 1/2 from home in southlake.

Basically, if I were you, i'd figure out the best housing and job situation you can find, and hit up whichever part of the lake that works best for where you'll be. You honestly cant go that far wrong no matter what.

I'm gonna be going back to Tahoe (N Lake) this season, but wont be arriving till Dec 13th so really want to try have a house sorted for when i arrive. Don't like my chances of finding a place that late.

Is there anywhere I should be looking other than craigslist?
