Where did park ski culture come from?

modern day hot dogging... always been a wild side to skiing.

Yea same here. I always love stopping at the hot dog stand and then eating them while I'm skiing. K+

Skating more than snowboarding.

Wonder why everybody has beanie underneath the helmet steeze? So as to look like more skaters imo. Skaters don't have earflaps on their helmets.

Some kid probably wanted to look different from some 'gapper'. He then probably realised his freestyle skiing was more similar to skating than the rich people skiing because it's a way to show status.

Urban/street/rails would have been inspired from skating.

Weed/drugs from skating. I skate myself, and yes I know not everybody smokes weed but there are those who do.

Aerials came before snowboarding if I'm not mistaken.

And trying to be a gangster. It has mellowed out with the past few years but get what I mean with all the rap.

I'm not critical of 'park' ski culture, just showing my interpretation.

All of that came from snowboarding more. Snowboarding took from skating obviously but all your reasons are more snowboarding.

I me urban street rails? How the fuck would that be from skateboarding over snowboarding where people are already building jumps out of snow and sliding rails in the winter.

And as far as smoking weed that's not really ski culture imo but if you want to count that and trace it's routes that goes back to surfing.

Because modern freesking has more in common with aerials than snowboarding.

Op, just got to youtube and watch x games big air clips in order from like 1999 up til recent... its cool to see how the subtle differences in each year got this sport to where it is now. X games definitely is nowhere near a perfect representation of the sport, but you get an idea of the progression and how steeze has morphed over time.

I agree with all of your points, but modern freeskiing was significantly influenced by moguls as well.

For sure. Johnny Mosely's dinner roll really helped move things away from the straight up gymnastic style and more into the off axis flow of today. Not that people weren't already getting corked in the park on skis then, but that helped the overall.

It used to be you watched moguls for ski freestyle, and pipe for snowboard freestyle. Cool to see how far the sports have come.

Correct that the early park culture came from mogul skiers going in the snowboard park (skiers weren't allowed in most parks). NCAF / 3 Phils / Tanner, were all mogul skiers.

Jonny Moseley's big contribution was 1998 Olympics with the 360 mute. That blew up park skiing.

Fuck. Was thinking the dinner roll was 98. Either way he crushed it at both nagano and salt lake. and totally on the skiers in snowboard parks. Jsed to get my pass pulled and or threatened by douche bag patrollers.

That said it felt could to cruise past the "snowboard only" signs as a kid. #breakingthelaw # childhoodrebellion #yolo

Well, yeah, park ski culture comes from different influences like others have mentioned.

But for grinds/slides that would have definitely been from skating through snowboarding. Snowboarders would have been inspired from

Skating/surfing influenced snowboarding + moguls & aerials= park ski culture

So without skating, park skiing wouldn't have happened as it was the catalyst for snowboarding, which then influenced skiing.

So yes, snowboarding was the sport that changed skiing but this whole change came from skat.., wait a minute. Surfing?

OP, your answer is Polynesians. They started surfing -> skating-> snowboarding -> park skiing

I probably read your post wrong, but anyway.

It has been influenced by everything that has ever happened in the world to this point.

Boom.
