When the fuck did freestyle skiing become so 'gangster'?

oh alright sorry about that but to add onto what ^^ he said ^^ if some kid drives by and you hear country music coming out of his car he isn't automatically a wanna be cowboy? just because you like rap doesn't mean you want to be gangster or want to be black at all!

in other words to make it sound better, rap is music, you dont need to be black to appreciate it. Loads of people appreciate country and they're not rednecks or cowboys. Being gangsta is more of a hip hip lifestyle, its what your into.

Hell back in the day a gangster was an Italian, we they used to be the ones wearing the velour outfits, then the blacks stole that style a couple years ago.

i dont get why everyone complains bout this...i just happened to have read an article in a magazine and the guy writing it was bashing bandanas, baggy pants, and flashing so called "gang signs". this editor who wrote the article bashes all this gangster-ness so to say but yet he still wants tanner halls autograph. i dont think that wearing the typical 'black' appareal means you wanna be gangsta. its definately more of a style issue. i wear a bandana cuz its stylish and nice to have over my face when its snowing. i dress for style and to have fun...why not have fun while skiing?

i wear baggy pants and coat, not because i want to be "gangsta", but just because its way more comfortable and you can move around easier and stuff. Im not going to wear tight ass girl pants just because someone thinks i look gangster like

hell yea slopestyle drive-by

White kids love hip hop. The amount of skiers who embrace the hip hop lifestyle is equal to the amount in the suburbs. You can say what you want but hip hop's biggest selling point is it's ideas about money, women and fame. Almost every big rapper has a cocky attitude. Alpha male syndrome. Be the most succesful, and to show that you are, the rappers give homage to their beginings(not that every rapper came from the projects) by wearing baggy clothes(due to the lack of money, kids wore hand me downs that were sometimes too big.). Next you have the bling which just shows how succesful you are. I'm not saying rock doesn't have this behavior, nor is every rapper cocky. The general public wants to be like those who are hardcore, successful and have a shitload of hot women.

well...I can't say that I dress gangsta by any means, but I do wear xl outerwear. Have a few tall tees and will wear a bandana from time to time(only when my nose is cold).

For me, ever since I stopped wearing rear entry boots, which was when I was like 7? I wanted pants that would cover at least 3 of the 4 buckles on my boots. Dunno why but I always did.

So in that sense Ive been reppin my steeze for 13 + years. gangsta? nah, but I must say sometimes theres nothin like blastin some sick hip hop to get pumped up before sessioning.

The gangsta steeze is an ongoing fashion fad in the USA because it camouflages fat kids and most American kids are fat asses. I am not saying the skiers, skiers are sporty by default, but the general public who fuel such fads, they're fucking fat.

If you look at a coutry where the entire male youth population is athletic, like Italy, their designer suits fall around their bodies with so much style and class. They all dress like pimps. No baggy nonsense.

Its funny that all the "gangsta pros" are like 5'5 and like 150 pounds...maybe. Tanner would get fucking decked in the real world. I know these kids growing up in Tahoe think they are so hard but they really are a bunch of soft pussies. The large big mountain riders and racers are the only ones who should even try to talk shit or pretend they are ganster. Its an overral terrible direction the sport is headed, seems heavily influenced by snowboarding as well. Awesome thread, someone had to bring it up.

I hope you didn't reproduce.

You're taking shit way too seriously man.

I sport tall tees and way baggy XL shit and blah blah blah. But that is far from reflective of my true personality. Sure, I listen to a whole SHITLOAD of hip hop. Weather it be kidz in the hall or the GZA, all the way to Mistah F.A.B. and Mac Dre. I LOVE the music. But my true nature of dress is a fusion between san jose skate culture (krew jeans whatttttt) and skiing/snowboarding culture.

On top of that, I'm a designer that deals with clients through e-mail and in person, all the time. So I'm not sitting there acting a fool when it comes down to business. Schoolwise? I get a 3.7GPA. I don't constantly spit black dialogue nor do I have a lot of disrespect for others on the mountain.

But because of the way I choose to dress while riding..tons of older skiers give me a lot of shit and seem to treat me as if I were some teenage moron.

Put all those kids with there parents. Put them in an environment where they are forced to be less "gangster", and I'm sure you will see that all these kids are "normal" by your standards. They are all just having fun! Hip hop culture is damn sick, and you should just let people do what they like.

And as for white people in general. They are DAMN silly. Go to your mountain and look at every white guy thats over 30. All dressed up in the tight Helly suit they bought 14 years ago. I sit on my mountain, and almost feel ashamed. So many white people are so boring, plain, and typical. Glen Plake still finds a way to ride in style, why can't others?

I mean, hell, the other day, I sat on a lift chair with 3 white guys, all above the ages of 40. One started talking to me and made a comment that it was his first day on a chair with all skiers. He then proceeded to call snowboarders "Fucking morons" and "knuckle draggers". You tell me what kind of an attitude is that? Any person on the mountain can be an idiot. I've come across just as many stupid skiers as boarders. Strapping a board on your feet doesn't entitle you to losing 60 IQ points.

lastly. NATION OF JIBLAM LIKE WHAT HYPHY HYPHY YEEEEEEEEEEEE.

yay to the a. planet o' the baypes! stay slayin on emmm.

YARRRRRRRRRRAMEAN?

hahahaha

It's probably because one of few genres young people listen to is trap / hip hop, also because younger skiiers are influenced by the pros that had alot of that exaggerated baggy hip hop style, have that kind of music in all their edits, is gonna influence any young rider who thinks freestyle is cool (and presumably already likes that kind of music) I think it's alittle bit cringeworthy but it's all in good fun and people can dress how they want, you can dress like a street thug gangzta straight hustla or whatever just dont act like one.

I think it's more about breaking conformity like in the skate world. I didn't get into freeskiing until high school (I'm 20 now). I got into it by watching slvsh on youtube which is obviously a derivative of skate. In modern culture the gangsta hip hop thing is the most common way people "fight the system" as oppose to punk or something a generation ago

Skiing and rapping are very similar. Not because of cultural reasons or historical reasons, but because they both revolving around having a shit ton of swag

My 19-year-old self would tell you to go eat shit.

My 34-year-old self also tells you to go eat shit.

The bigger question here is why does one dig into a 15-year-old post, cherry-pick one comment, and then talk trash?
