When is a ski to big?

not a rant about fat skis.

But a question: I'm 6'0'' and looking to get 189 hellbents, is that way to big for me?

a 189 would be too big for someone like 5'5.....if a ski is waaayyy over your head then its prob too big. i'm 6'2 and the only skis I have that are shorter than me are my AR5's and they come up to about eye level.

A ski is to big for you when you can't...ski it. They only way to tell if a ski is to big for you is to actually ride it, and you will probably be able to tell by how it is kicking your ass.

anything that is way over your head is too big, unless you are racing. but i like to keep my skis between just over my head to about nose level

I'm about 5' 8" and I like my skis to be about a 183. But it really varies by ski and what your personal preferences are. But I would say the 189's would be fine for you as long as you are a pretty strong skier.

your skis shouldnt be any longer than the hill you're skiing on :P

but seriously, i usually go with nose to forehead area. if you're heavier, go for a bit bigger. i think the hellbents would be good if youre an agressive skier.

when i raced i used 201's i was 5'5" and 100lbs soakin wet in ski gear. so yes a 189 pow ski is doable for a 6' guy, especially if they are centered or close to.

im 5'4" and 115lbs and ride 189 bents, so what you really should be asking is: is the 189 too small?

A ski is too big when the extra size starts becoming counter-productive. As long as you can comfortably ride them then you're ok--I like to err on the bigger side because short skis don't really have anything positive going for them.

I'm a bit older and slower than most of you, but have been advised that the 188cm Salomon 1080 Guns I just received are too long for me, by one experienced boot guy, myself being 6'5" and 220 lbs. But most of you guys are a bit shorter and going for even longer skis, so I guess there is quite a difference in opinion. I'm thinking of sending these back, but I'm not sure what to do.

You are a big dude. Those skis are fine for you unless you are beginner to intermediate. These are the Guns, and not the Gun labs?

they're the 1080's I think, 2008 light blue with a small bird to the left ski, camped on the tail of a raven on the right. i guess I'll keep 'em. at the very least they'll be good for powder, and if too big on bumps, i've go some older skis for that. the ones i demo'd at the bird last year were the most new ski experience i've had that i can remember. the comments on this thread have been helpful. thanks.

hell bents are sized really off the 179 is like a 186 i looked at the 189's and they're giants. really heavy and big you might wanna eye them inperson first.
