When Did NS Go Bad?

I mean, seriously.

I come on to post some skis in Buy/Sell (187 Klint Kryptos) and I half ass expect them to not gain much attention since they are "big kid skis" that aren't designed for fast swaps or getting booter crunk (half of NS won't even get that joke...)

But B/S is literally a Saga/Jibberish/FD thrift shop. Every FS thread title reads like "Blow Out Going To College Buy My Stuff So I Can Afford Rubbers To Keep the Clap Off My Ding Dong FREE STICKERS!!"

And inside the threads? "How tall is it?" "Whats the zipper length?" "Dope sale bro! Free bump! +K me brah!"

When was the last time you asked how waterproof a piece was, or if the garment had been treated with Nikwax to revive the DWR? How many of you know what DWR is?

Really guys? I thought I lost touch with the "Newschool" when I got a real job and couldn't get on the hill more than 20 days a year.

Turns out "newschool" just went full retard fashion show. Wow.

What kind of shithole colleges are these kids going to? Go to your health services at your college and they give you condoms for free

there's still good sales going on in the BST...it's just a way higher volume of stuff than it used to be, so you have to bump your threads way more often. the big problem with it is how the average age of the site has dropped from 4 years ago (or we got older), and mostly that there's just way more people on here. you still see decent threads in cults, regionals and occasionally the main forums, but the BST is just more work than it used to be. if you selling some big sticks i'd try tgr, there's more people looking to fill out their pow quiver and it never hurts to broaden your field of prospective buyers (be warned, people on tgr are much harsher on new users, or jongs, than NS)

I don't often agree with OP, but when i do it's because he is right.

I used to get some good things off Buy/Sell... now the good stuff is hard to find! Unless you want a hoodie or some saga stuff.

Oh and to the BrOP, go to TGR already!

how'd you not see this coming? skiing (relatively speaking) is fucking huge now. skiers are sponsored by target, pop tarts and verizon wireless. newschoolers isnt the same couple hundred something active members it was years ago. there are a ton more outerwear companies and a ton more kids involved in the sport. at park city, skiers vastly outnumber snowboarders. you shouldn't be too surprised

You're not getting premium condoms at health services. You're getting some piece of shit that will chafe the fuck outa your girl.

They are all on the pill anyway. Pop an amoxicillin and go in raw.

Meh, people usually state what the waterproofing on an item is, and if not you can just google the product and find it yourself.

With regards to the nikwax, most people who know about that, will be able/willing to do it themselves.

I reckon most people will be aware of the term DWR, although if you're after people with this kind of knowledge I think TGR is the forum for you, possibly epicski(don't know/frequent it, but I get the gist it's of a similar nature)

my school had Durex Ribbed, and Rough Riders XL studded (for the thug in all of us)

Pretttty decent condoms, and they are free in the health center along with all dorm lobbys

skiing has always been a fashion show. there was even a ski movie out some years ago called "fashion show". besides i would doubt anyone would wtb your klint skis. if its not bigname brand it wont sell as fast, and while skis are easy to buy at any snow store, tall tees are more elusive.

Everyone is saying NS went to shit, the newer members wont get that joke. Well no fucking way really? Youd expect someone whos just getting into freeskiing to have seen a relatively old movie in terms of their lifespan. Rather than mock them why not teach them?

It'd be like making fun of middle school kids now who havent seen Ren & Stimpy or Ahh Real Monsters. You really expect them to have??

I think if older NS wants to complain about where NS is going, then they should make it so the roots of the sport and the vibe of how the site used to be known. I dont feel at fault for joining in 2009 and not knowing the history/dictonary of freeskiing, right away. Even when i joined back then it still took me a solid couple of years before i knew a good amount on what there is to know.

But seriously if you hate the way NS is now, then okay? Go ahead and make an effort, contribute some ideas to the staff on how things can be improved. Teach the kids who clearly don't know any better. Outside of the computer most of you older members would be people the littler kids in the park look up to and would want to be guided from. On here most of you seem to have just shunned them away. Take the mentor role on, who else is going to teach the new gen??

You can't honestly come onto NS and bitch because it doesnt cater to 30 year olds...

you've never been "young" on NS, you dont know what its like, you're not the same as all these kids you hate. So why are you judging them? gtfo

Evan, it's easy to defend something when it's cutting you a check.

Go back and read the press release from when Source acquired Grind. I specifically calls out "providing content" that is relevant to its core audience of "18-35". If that's still true, try are doing a terrible job.

First of all, you have no idea what my professional relationship with NS is, I make videos I don't work for NS.

That being said, if that did say 18-35 then (what 2009?) its definitely NOT the same now.

Which content do you mean? Go into more detail, I'm very curious.

If I said 18-35 I think I was off - our core audience is 13-25 - though there is actually almost as many 25-44 year old people on here as there are 13-17.

We're trying to give more customizability with the homepage, and that is where the slightly older and less frequent user can experience only the good stuff.

Doug, I'm just quoting the press release / article Shmuck wrote wen Source bought Grind. I don't know who the quoted individual was. Google "source acquires grind newschoolers" and it will pop up.

The content I am talking about is articles, news, and other relevant stuff a skier would be interested in. Take a look at Unofficial. That's a pretty great model (aside from the lack of a forum). If NS took that concept of using social media to link to its own site, I am sure there would be a much higher ratio of older folks there. I'd be able to see what I was going to get before I clicked it.

Again, I didn't leave newschoolers because I stopped caring about skiing. I left because I felt like the site moved in a direction that was more focused on providing a dynamic homepage with stuff all over the place. I liked being able to look at "news" or whatever all on one organized page. Maybe I can do that now, but I have to customize it? Eh. It was fine before.

In regards to the other stuff. There is no reason the thread titles in Buy/Sell should be tolerated. It's awful, an not because of the format. "FS: L Saga Lobster Jacket - Lightly Used". That's all there should be. Not "CRAZY DOPE SALE! SAGA WITH FREE STICKERS - 9/10 SUPER TALL!"

You're being a bit dramatic about the B/S section...

That being said, NS is changing every day and using social media. I think NS is doing a great job and Jason has been taking the reigns and hes been killing it.

You can't complain about B/S/T because NS itself has next to nothing to do with that. It's as free a market as you'll find. If the people want huge jackets and tall tees that come with free stickers...someone will sell it to them. It moves with the demands and supply of the users.

and for technical specs or info...google it, and within .005 seconds you'll have 500,000 pages of info. About anything.

Pretty soon this goes one of two ways:

"Man, back in the old days when Mr.Bishop ran newschoolers this place was so much better. Now its all just stupid kids bitching."

"Oh Hi NS staff member I'm meeting at a movie premier. You say your name is Doug Bishop... do you work for Jason Mousseau?"

Ns caters to what the community wants and changes with the community. Because there is a demand for content that you don't like, that is what gets posted. If everybody changed what they wanted out of this site, the site would cater to a different demographic

Also you've said that you like unofficial networks more, so spend more time there, or at tgr. There are a variety of skiing resources available that cater to different crowds, so maybe ns isn't the place that best fits your interests
