Met a dude today that doesn’t work and just skis full time on unemployment. (And he’s not very good)

f’ing pisses me off. Out here working my butt off, and my taxes are going to abled bodied morons who have no intention on getting a job because they’re making more off of unemployment than they would be working.

The leaches of society eh

A moron who makes more skiing than working a real job?

what a genius! an oxymoron honestly!

I have a few buddies who jugg unemployment and skate full time, idk why you’re mad at those people instead of companies not paying someone a decent living wage lol. Maybe the real leaches are shitty CEO’s gyping the working class so they can make a buck?

I can relate with you, sucks that people can get away with doing this but do you really blame the guy? If I could manage to make ends meet on unemployment and ski every day....... I would be all over it! Unfortunately it cant happen for myself.

My soap box is about people who litter and who dont use their turn signals. Why do some people not understand the simple concept of cleaning up after themselves?? The world will never know. Also, if you cant communicate while driving your car I am positive that your relationship with others sucks ass because you cant communicate. Off my soap box now.

Will always be semi truck drivers who take 4 miles to pass another truck, blocking both lanes. 'Professional driver' is a joke.

I almost got in a fistfight at my local state park last year cuz I watched some dudes litter. If you litter fuck you, thats the end all be all

People that drive like they were just shot out of a canon, don't get ever get pulled over or get tickets, but then other people get tickets for going 5MPH over the speed limit.

Unfortunately they havent figured out if they raised minimum wage so working was no longer a waste of time people would actually work.

They'll get cut off eventually, at this point its just people who worked for companies that shut down, utah is close to normal unemployment numbers, tons of places are hiring... this guys is just hurting himself not finding a new job.

I would agree with that statement I guess I was referring to people that have been doing it for long periods of time I'm not sure what minimum is in utah but.

min wage is 7.25 in utah so yeah your statement is partially true, but I think people who are unemployed at this point just need to move on and get a new job.

That definitely the vast majority with the way things have been and food places closing.

$7.25?! Does the cost of living reflect that at all or is Utah legislation just that out of touch??

idk what the laws regarding it are everywhere but I know dudes who have been doing it in Minneapolis for over a year now with no intent on stopping, to be fair they lost their jobs when covid hit and then realized they could ball on unemployment and just skate all day.

You've clearly never watched The Wild and Wonder Whites of West Virginia... But fr people abuse the welfare system all the time. There's ways to scam it for sure and it doesn't take a genius. It's not good pay tho

I believe 7.25 is that national minimum but its also fucking utah there's no major city like that of NYC, LA, Seattle, Boston etc. However I definitely believe that its way to low. Where I am in RI its 10.75 and is being raised to 12.25 this year I believe however we have a really high population density and are located in the NYC, Boston area.

You think that's bad? I used to work at a pharmacy and I can't tell you how many times I had people put the smart key to their brand new mercedes or bmw on the counter while looking for their medicaid card. The hasidic jews were particularly good for this since the wife is an "unmarried mother of seven" according to the state, but between leaving off a few zeros on their income tax reporting, zero tax housing facilities because they're "educational centers" and whatever else they did, they're loaded. And like, I know people who could totally use the medicaid funding they're wasting.

So yeah, at least in NJ your tax money was financing their kids adderall and 100k/year "culturally sensitive" occupational therapy because they raise some fucked up kids but can't see a normal therapist.

there's a reason why its called funemployment lol, sounds like you were skiing in the cottonwoods

i mean when you live in a state like UT with tons of job opportunities and room for career advancement on top of being able to ski more than the average joe, why the fuck would you sit on unemployment. this guy just sounds like a dipshit tbh.

Just out of date legislation paired with low cost of living, I think it hasn't changed because most businesses pay their employees more than that because otherwise nobody will work for them, I'm sure some people are making min wage but they're mostly under 18 I would think.

Lol I volunteered at a food bank in HS and will never forget watching this guy go through and get all his free groceries. Then proceeded to whip out his cell phone and tell someone he was meeting them for breakfast at Perkins and gets into his Cadillac. Definitely people in need but definitely people cheating the system.

"I MET A SKIER TODAY WHO GETS $600 A WEEK IN UNEMPLOYMENT! ITS COMPLETELY UNFAIR AND FUCK THOSE SCUMBAGS FOR FINDING LOOPHOLES IN THE SYSTEM!"

*parent company that owns resort gets $3 million in tax rebates while the executives who earn

ten figure salaries pay 1/8th the average tax rate through loopholes*

"THEY'RE JOB CREATORS AND GAMING THE SYSTEM TO AVOID TAXES ISN'T A GIFT! ITS YOUR MONEY!!!!"

Talk about fucked up priorities. Jesus.

If you are making more unemployed than you could at a minimum wage job, that is an excellent argument for a living wage.

In the inevitably imperfect system, it's better to have a few slackers take it easy on unemployment than have people lose their job and everything else with it because there's no unemployment income available to them.

More of the taxes you pay are going towards blowing stuff up in other countries than to funding Employment insurance.

Doesn't everybody have EI premiums deducted from their paycheck rather than it being tax funded, or is that not how it works in the states?

Also what does the fact he's not very good at skiing have to do with anything?

Nothing lol, it’s just the cherry on top of her jealousy fueled rant.

She probably found out he makes more skimming unemployment and skiing everyday than she does with her full time job. “Not being very good” is just her internally trying to justify why he doesn’t deserve the sweet life he has going on so she can feel better about herself for working full time just to get out and ski a couple days a week- I’d actually bet he’s not a bad skier since you know... he’s skiing every day .

Both of these things make me insane!

It’s run by the state so I imagine it’s a little different depending on where you live, but yeah in WA the premium just comes out of

your check. So I mean, to an extent you are just getting your own money back out of the pool but in order for the system to function you need the like 95 percent of working stiffs to never use it or it would bankrupt the program.

I think the way it works in most cases is the people who run the EI program have a team of investment professionals who invest the $ from the premiums, and they try to run the program just by paying out EI from the interest while growing the principle.

Alright while we’re bitching about the government and shitty people I’ll go next.

My wife and I had kids kind of at the same time as one her friends, but they never got married because she had an off the books dog walking and boarding business that she ran out of her home, so once they had kids she started raking in the welfare checks as a poor single mother. Her baby daddy is from some big time old money family and never amounted to anything professionally because why bother to try in his shoes anyway.

I live in Maine and we’ve got a 12 dollar minimum wage I think.

But yeah op, ive heard it from both racists and from non racists that the whole “quit ur job bc welfare will pay you more” thing is total horse shit.

If you incentivize ppl to have jobs by paying them better there will be alot more work done and alot more efficiency.

welfare in society is basically like cancer in a human body.

every normal cell in a human body has a job and works for the greater good of the whole body.

but cancer just sits there and feeds off the work of normal cells.

yes some ppl need welfare bc they are disabled or whatever. But if you can work a job you should. More work done will benefit society as a whole, and youll be proud of not being a cancer of society.

Whats makes EI so powerful is that its on a federal level. Everyone contributes, but a piece of it is yours and the government returns it at tax time if you dont use it. Seasonal employees is a requirement. So I go on unemployment for 4 months. Its 1000$ every 2 weeks and its capped there. You can have a million dollar income and still only get 2 thousand a month.

I have an existentialist hatred towards trust fund babies. Never worked a day in their lives and they dont have any intention either while they leach off generations of hard work. Then they are floored and completly unable to comprehend why my generation cant own anything.

Yeah in Canada it's federal, but in the US it operates on the state level. In both cases, the premiums go into a principle sum from which investments are made, and as often as possible the dividends are what is paid out, same as CPP. For instance at one point, CPP owned something like 40% of Skype.

So in a theoretical incidence of mass unemployment, the EI funds wouldn't be used up immediately because the $ being paid in are constantly making dividends/interest.

The leaches of society eh

So I felt the same way. Until I realized I can make more money from unemployment + $400/week than I can make at the old $15/hr seasonal landscaping job I had working 40 hours. Why the fuck would I work? My current winter job pays well enough I can make the $6-800/week from unemployment last all summer until the next winter.

don’t hate the player; hate the system. There are high schoolers who got laid off last spring due to Covid and were able to collect unemployment and get $600/week extra (almost $300 total more than I made working 40 hours at $15/hr after taxes).

if Covid is good for nothing else, it’s sure shown me that this country could easily solve our homeless, food, and healthcare problems in a second if they decided to spend a whole stimulus bill on the population, but we care more about foreign aid/military vehicles than our own people.

Heyyyyyy budddddyyyyyyyy. You doing alright today? You seem like you might have woke up on the wrong side of the bed...

smoke a bowl, go ski (if you ski; if not, get on that bike) and have a little bit of fun. I know I will, on your tax paying dime, when I go back on funemployment again :)

i fuckin hate it when people don’t wear seatbelts ITS NOT THAT HARD

i gotta constantly bitch at my friends to put one on i hate it. why do people not wear seat salts? you’re voluntarily giving your life away from even a simple crash. I escoeially don’t like it when the conditions are ass and i gotta remind those mfs to buckle up.

If you're getting passed in the slow lane, by multiple people, move the fuck over.

Left lane-itis is all too common these days.

It be like that sometimes. If you got it, make the most of it. All I did was fly fish and stack cash when I was on it last spring, loved life. Now I’m working my ass off and have skied maybe 5 times this year.

life’s weird man

Here's the way I look at all of this. Every profession needs people but nobody wants to work if you don't make money so somehow there needs to be incentives for people to continue working in non stem dominated areas. everyone want bread but nobody wants to be a baker is the way I would put it. In this case in order to balance out the value different professions have in society one has to figure out a way to ensure everyone can prosper because without people working in all areas society will eventually crumble as we all try to compete for the same type of jobs.

My soapbox is getting f’n tired hearing people call BTC and crypto one big scam when they know dick about it. Huge reason I got in (besides loving the idea of BTC as a hedge to fiat devaluation) was because you can’t learn if you don’t get down and dirty with it. And after 4 years of studying the space—it’s just so fucking hard and cringey hearing how stupid the “buttcoin” people are. Willful ignorance. I’ve made my conclusions studying the space for 4 years, you: your parents or Rush Limbaugh/Dave Ramsey said it’s a scam so you just conclude: yes.

Not financial advice, i still hedge with gold and silver too. I trust nothing 100% but I’ve definitely felt you’re taking a bigger risk financially by *not owning* bitcoin than you do by allocating 5-10% of your net worth into it
