when i go to turn it on it shows a little picture of a filefolder with a exclamation mark beside it (!).

what the fahk does that mean?

i have tried reseting the thing countless times, deleted all the files from it and re-downloaded them to it.

anyone have any ideas?

heres the deal, and its NOT good

the os (program that runs ipods) cant find your hard drive inside the ipod.

this is caused by two things, broken file structure, or fucked hard drive

reformat the hd, plug it into the mac, if it shows up on the desktop, your cool

if it doesnt, send it back, your hd is dead

he says all i need to do is set it from a mac operating system to windows and it should work.

now i just need to figure out how to do that.

Theres nothing wrong with apple, their products are as rock solid as PC, they just aren't as interchangable...

Anyways, I don't own an iPod but from what I read on an old Slashdot post, it seems people were having problems with their iPods if they were a certain version number for use on Mac operating systems and they were used on the Windows operating system or vice versa. If I were you, I'd go to the iPod site and download the operating system upgrade and try that first.

This is where you get the OS upgrade

Other than that, its still an electronic gadget, just yank the batteries, let it sit for awhile, and put it back in, haha, always works for all my stupid gadgets :-)

i got it to work lastnight

it was just a matter of going to the apple site and downloading the pc operating update.

then you can just drag and drop mp3s from itunes.

works great.

oh ok Adamskinick... what needs upgrading on a harddrive. i never knew that i was constantly downloading upgrads for my home pc hard drive. oh wait, CUZ I NEVER HAVE, nor never will. harddrive dont need upgrades you fools. the only reason for upgrades is because hackers find ways to get into your system, so microsoft or whoever needs to put fixes out for their products. so just stop arguing with me cuz i am in the deployment, yes i deploy patches and updates to 7000 pc in my company, IT department... so i think i know what i am talking about when it comes to computer oriented stuff.

ok, heres the deal

firmware upgrades are CONSTANT across the board with pc/mac/sgi/my fucking etch-a-sketch. NO hardware ever comes out perfect the first time. If it did, it would never COME out because some monkey in a labcoat would be tooling with it forever

macs are not shitt, they are one of the most consistent/stable pieces of hardware/software available. OS 10 being built on the unix core makes for the most crash-proof system available. In two years ive only crashed my two macs with OS 10 once, and it was because I was tooling around in the terminal and got the kernel (compilation of code that makes unix run) all confused so it panicked (a real term) and crashed on me

pc's that are consumer models are 2nd rate. Gateway/dell/compaq/hp/insert name are built with useless junk hardware and propriatary system formats that makes upgrading outside their OWN products rather hard, wheteher its ON MOTHERBOARDS audio that cant be upgraded, or just shit hardware to start.

unless you a) custom build a machine b) buy alienware/falcon pc/any of the high end machines, you are getting shit hardware, let alone being tied to Billy Gates and his third reich company microsoft.

The new g5 processor is over 50% faster then a dual 3 gig xeon server Intel processor. Dual xeons cost a shitload compared to a dual g5. The top of the end g5 now sells for 2995, where a dual xeon system is well over that with proper hardware

Mac has broken the 4 gig barrier and allowed mac users to install up to 8 gigs of ram into our machines, we are constantly innovating new ideas, hell what company HASNT made their own i-pod ripoff, yet the ipod still reigns supreme

take Itunes, 25 million songs sold since its been opened. Microsoft/napster/everyone else is ripping these ideas off

your upgrading the hardware and software that the ipod runs on, not the hard drive....maybe you dunno how these things work, but the ipod is more then just a hard drive in a shiny little case. you upgrade/firmware the hardware and software that makes the hard drive function and the music play back

hell im a FILM man and i know this, what the fuck type if IT department do you work in? id imagine any real IT person would understand the simple concept of an upgrade/firmware/bios flash

and mac uses the 64 bit processor and utilizes the 8 gig max of ram, they put this into use faster/easier/more efficiently then AMD, whose 64 bit processor for consumers is trickeling into the market

and spyware on pc's has so many back doors to actually get onto your system, its not always human stupidity

D-loc, I think you should be fired. Do you have any idea what a driver is? What about a bios? The firmware that runs a piece of hardware is always being updated. Are you trying to say that updates only apply to software and operating systems when security issues are found? That's rediculous.

Just because you work in an IT department, doesn't mean you know everything about computers. I garuntee you there are people on this site who know a lot more about computers than you do.

Oh and if you are wondering why a piece of hardware requires updates sometimes, it can be from a multitude of things but typically its improvements to efficiency, compatibility issues with software, other drivers and other hardware, some programming mistakes in the firmware, increased ease of use, etc.

haha look at you all trying to use ur brains to function and process a result to this question. why the hell are upgrades nescessary if nothing else is being installed. thats the whole reason for upgrades. its cuz other programs conflict with the main os or bios. well since you can only put songs onto an ipod and are not going to be installing new software their would be no need for improvements.

if you go by what you were saying then why would the first ipod's still be working? what after 59 days does the OS crash, does the HD die and need new upgrades. nope they dont, simply why mac is shit. they didnt put out a finished product to begin with so you have to constantly be dl upgrades cuz they screwed up. i have an mp3 player and i never have to dl upgrades, HMM i wonder why. cuz some companies know how to do it right the first time. maybe mac should finish their product first and make it complete before they release a piece of junk. actually trouble shoot before they release to the public and find all the flaws. dont ship it out then find out that oh no theirs a problem so now we need an upgrade. when if mac would have just done it right the first time.

oh btw macs kickass i have the new swivel Imac and i must say it is amazing, whoever said everyone copied the ipod he is partly true, i remember about 4 years ago the first nomad jukebox came out and i was the size of a cd player very nice, then ipod later as well as other big ass mp3 players. then they all start making low end crap knock off ipods chargin 200$ cause they do hold same space but A.require batteries, B.have shit warranty/break easily apple is changing the way comps are made, look at Imovie/Shake/ipod/all these programs. yes pc's have their advantages but they dont compare to macs, they have no reliability, i mean what do u want a cheap ass skanky ski or an expensive nice one, of course the better one is more expensive no one wants a 300$ pc its just shit, the alienware stuff though is high end so get that if u can

I'm going to put this simple, hopefully you can get it the third time its explained.

The IPOD conflicts with certain versions and configurations of windows. This was realised after it was released. An update was released to rectify the problem.

Have you ever programmed software? If you truely are 'The smartest here when it comes to computer' then you must have. When you program, you must debug. There are 1,000,000's of test cases and debug teams/programmers cannot test them all. The more important ones are tested and the more common ones are tested. Things almost always slip through the cracks.

Please don't be presumptius. You say you are 19 and are working full time. How many programming languages do you know? I myself know 7, I have extensive hardware configuration knowledge, I know database managment and I can function in several operating systems. I know that there are others on here who have more knowledge then me in some of these fields. Don't be so presumptuous.

d-loc, making 30k/year at 19 is NOT any big deal. Especially living in Ohio where cost of living and height of salaries are higher than a lot of rural places. so, if you're making a salary position, you didn't go to college? my friend makes that and he works on the phone for computer tech support. that comes out to about $14/hr. That's not that good and it's definitely not respectable so you shouldn't brag about that.

in terms of your ipod hacking, the memo functionality and data recording functionality displaying to the lcd was out before apple released the ability to do that. on top of that, a lot of network hacks have been built into the ipod to run at boot to do things like log packet traffic.

2. my last mac, the last mac i have is an lc2, it's from 1989 and it still runs fine at a blazing 20 mhz. it's not my only one, my powerbook 5300 from around 1996 is still cranking. oh and my g3 from 1999...i'm typing on that right now.

3. last reboot on this machine was um...uptime command reads

19:06 up 156 days, 11 mins, 2 users, load averages: 0.80 0.93 0.70

cute b/c this does have all the mac security updates on it.

4. my last mac ran me 3 grand, which for the 4 1/2 years i've had it and it's ability to run everything at a nice speed, i'd say is pretty good.

5. yeah, i can, but i also can w/my wireless 4 button...big deal. people always complain about games, are they saying they have nothing better to do, except for play games all day?

6. an interface that even pc magazines (not like they're respectable) are praising??? yeah, i'd say the interface is dumb then

in terms of hard drive updates, you do need to update drivers for that periodically. it's minor details for fixing, but have you ever written a usb or firewire driver? i have, i do it for my job and it's not fun...it's not quite wireless mesh load balancing, but then again, what is. i'm the last person you probably would want to get into an argument w/. i don't have anything against the x86 platform, but when you code for winbloze everyday on the machine level (assembly, not c), you realize how dumb it is...sorta like most of the foreign gov'ts are doing and finally dumping windoze for an open source/won't break solution.

i'm not gonna respond to anything else unless you have a serious question and can talk like an adult...talking like you did above makes you sound like you have a total of 1 tooth.
