So now we know what it's like to hurt your self, but what do you guys do when in the midst of an 'oh shit' situation?

Tuck and roll?

Cannonball?

Teleportaion?

So basically your about to fall - what do you do?

Cause my back is hurtin and i don't want to do anything else wrong to it...

Discuss!

(btw I did search 'fall' and couldn't find n-e-thing)

so like let lloose and rag doll?

lol im just gonna run around falling down and see what works ahha

Just say oh shit because there is no way you will be able to think worth a damn, practicing falling would work I guess but youre probably more likely to injure yourself than if you had never practiced at all~

there is a good way to fall.

try to land on your feet, but when you do so bend your knees and take the hit with your bottom and back and roll over.

sky divers are specialy trained on this and cuold surivive a free fall from what height ever.

becuase the down speed nevver go over 200 km/h.

you vill allwas hurt your self by falling and crash.

simlpy don't jump if your back hurts.

use backprotektion!

sorry for bad Eng.

you have to try to work with the momentum you have, so try to land on your feet, bend knees to absorb force, and then jump or roll out of it kind if in the same movement.

practicing falling will help you a ton, i dunno what your talking about. on the trampoline, i've had lots of practice falling. like when i'm amidst a backflip, somehow messup and stranded upside down, i try and turn my body sideways so i always end up landing on my back, rather then my neck. saved my neck countless times

tuck and roll.

it's what they use in parkour / freerunning when they jump from really high things. u don't do a full roll, instead u roll over one shoulder dissipating the impact over ur entire back, but not ur neck or spine and u also take the downward momentum and convert it to foward momentum.

i didnt make this tutorial but i think its good

but im pretty sure ur talkin bout skiing so it might not be useful.

you can tuck and roll

and i've heard trying to land on your thigh or somethin like that?

and yea the skydiver one works from experience, 60 footer 180, came up short and was like 'sssshhhiiiiitttt!!!'

haha

If you're going to land backseat, i know a kid who can do an immediate worm turn out of any crash and get right back on his feet. its the coolest way to fall.

other wise if you know youre going to totally can it, you can just go down with the ship, and not move at all.

agreed....... u relize how if you land on your back like that on snow you will prob break your spine, which could lead into paralysis/death. I know i was jumping on a trampoline slipped on ducktape in the middle and flew off and landed on my back like i normally would. Bad idea, fucked up my spine, luckly i just brusied it according to the docotr but its been week+ since its happend and i cant do anything athletic yet.

But back on topic; i asked a doctor whats the best way to fall. He said most people brace them self and that's actual not good. When you stiffen your muscles you have a much greater chance of hurting them, he told me why but i don't really remember. He said depending on how bad the fall is you wanna shield your hands arms/legs to prevent a break from just landing weird. But i mean if you overshoot 60ft by like 50 feet your best off just not landing on anything bad. He said if your gonna fall your best off landing on your side; like your thighs and arms. He said those bones/muscles are much stronger than lets say the core of your back.

When i fall skiing or longboarding everything kinda slows down and my mind really does process my options in a calm, slow, and analytical manner. For instance i went down long boarding and fell forward, as i was going down heres went on in my mind "ah shit..ok im going down, shit i shouldn't put my hand first it will get scraped up, i'll roll onto my shoulder so my hoodie takes the burn and not my skin". I think alota people have their brain enter that mode in a oh shit where they can process things quickly.

There was a really sick show on Discovery I saw about a week ago. Somehow when your body is put into that situation you're able to speed up the frames per second that your eyes see and it appears as though everything is in slow motion and your brain can make the decision it needs to. The way they tested it was they had first time bungee jumpers look at randomly flashing digital numbers before jumping. They couldn't determine any of the numbers. When on their first bungee jump they flashed the numbers again and the people were able to determine some of the numbers while in the free fall because the body took it as an emergency situation and sped up the eye's frame rate causing a slow motion sensation and they saw the numbers. So that's what happens when you fall.

If you ever watch karate (I use it for piano lessons), you will see that when somebody breaks a block of wood, they quickly retreat their hand as soon as it touches. This is because more inertia is retained when an object "bounces" from its velocity inversion (by 200%) instead of continuing in its same path.

In short, if you tense up and resist the fall, the impact with be twice as bad. If you loosen up and relax, you increase your chances of being okay. This applies to bones, ligaments, muscles, etc. (pretty much anything within Earth's gravitational field.)

just get hammered drunk, this will loosen you up incase you bail. key is to be loose and not tense up.

i really wanna c how a skydiver falls from that high and lands so they could survive possibly that sounds amazing

generally when i fall it's because im out of control and there's nothing i can do to correct my rotation or w/e so im pretty sure if you're going to fall there's shit all you can do except take it like a man get off the landing

i like to drop my tails/tips depending on which is up hill(reg drop tails, switch drop tips) this will cause ur skis to flex and absorb part of the impact and then when my feet hit i immediately let my knees flex down and fall to my butt my side or onto my thighs or hamstrings, this seems to be pretty affective for me

Or end up with a destroyed shoulder...

Best advice if you know you're going down... Tuck up and roll. Try to keep your arms in. Not stiff, but in close to your body.

are you fucking kidding me, do you know how many pro athlete's in various sports are trained to fall a certain way. Look at skateboarding in the pipe, notice how 99.9% of the time they fall they slide out on their knee's. Thats because their trained to do this.

Like said they have done studies that prove your brain does analyze info quicker in these situations. Thats what give's you the slow motion effect when you eat shit.

Id say the best is to land on your side. Also how do you tuck and roll with your ski's on?? i know you can do it in the air( DUH) but when you fall wont your taisl get caught?

if your parachute doesn't open you're dead, this has nothing to do with the proper way to land. They're just taking safety measures for late openings, or faster than normal descents. Trust me when i say nobody survives a 20,000 foot fall, even if they land 'correctly'.

def go to your feet, then sorta collapse and roll over your shoulder/back. keep your elbows tucked in and stay loose.

teleportation obviously.

Ive had some gnarly falls, some of which could have trashed my knee or broke my leg but absorbing it right...only end up with a broken nose!!!!! (this being from taking a 55ft jump to about 100)

usually helps too that if you feel like you are gonna come off a rail to just slide off rather than struggle to stay on......and just end up falling harder.

oh and for people askin about the 'how to roll' it would be mainly if when in the crashing procedure your skis come off :\ since im a fatass they always do so rollin is an option :/

You could always go for the good ol' penguin method.

1) Try to get your skis off by pushing on rear piece. (if this does not work proceed to #2)

2)Put your hands in pockets

3) Stiffen out so you are in a straight line: /----o o= head and / =feet

4)Scream to make it look/sound more intense than it really was.

5)Once you landtry to see how far you slide

Helpful tips: Only attempt this on small jumps.

But honestly you should prob land on your feet and slide down the landing screaming "MY ANKLES ARE BROKEN!!11! I GOT BROKEN ANKLES! AHHHHHH!!!!111!!ONE!!

I don't wear poll straps because I get chronic skiers thumb and to stop it I wear thumb braces when I ski and when I fall I toss my poles away so my hand/thumb doesn't get banged or sprained by the pole handle.

My dad always told me that if you find yourself sititng down on your tips, don't try to stand back up because you can tear your acl extremely easily. He said that any time your are going to fall, just let it happen, don't try to stand up and fight it or you will hurt yourself more.

And railwise, when you fall just get yourself unto snow and out of the way of the rail.

And when you fall on a landing make sure you get up and get out of the way quickly so some dumb snowboarder doesn't plow into you.

word thats the other thing. you gotta know when to not fight to hold on and just go down. most of the times ive gotten hurt its cuz i tried to make something there was just no way to make.
