Whats the deal with no poles?

Yo i'm not here to hate on anyone, cause as long as your having fun then you have accomplished the goal of skiing. I'm just wondering why i keep seeing more and more kids without poles. is it cause people are trying to work on balance? I personally think it looks a little goofy, but i was wondering what other people thought.

who had the no poles, and head from a guy quote?

it's fun for a little while, but when you go to pole plant, and you aint got shittt...enjoy...

"Skiing with no poles is like getting head from a guy, it feels good at first, then you look down and realize, your gay" -Unknown

no poles can be fun it has nothing to do w/ balance, i enjoy taking a few no pole runs but dont think id actually start doing it each time i go up to the mountain

btw theres a shitload of threads on ns dedicated to ppl discussing no poles you're prolly not gonna get very many more helpful responses but if you're actually interested in it adn not trying to up your post count, search no poles on the small search bar at the top right of your screen

That quote originally applied to skiboarding but some kid changed it to no poles.

Riding without poles is just a different feeling that u've got to try. In my mind its not a style progression (so who cares what it looks like) but instead it opens up a new area of skiing leading towards progression.

I like to hike without poles, I find they're too anoying when sessioning something.

I also like to go no poles to learn some grabs etc. Because it's easier to grab w/o poles ( they tend to get in the way some times ).

It's also fun when your just fooling around with all your shinanigans and such ^^

Hehe, shinanigans...

because poles are mostly useless if your a good skier.  in the park they really have no use at all, i understand using them in powder so its easier to get around,  but even without poles in powder, we can still get around easier than snowboarders.   some people may use them so they are leaning more forward, but a good skier can do that without poles, and pole plants are pretty worthless.

but the biggest reason of all is how good if feels,  you are so much more free, you can do so much more with grabs and plants, and you dont have worhtless sticks flapping around in your hands.  its just a much more free feeling.

its all personal preference, almost everyone still skis with poles most of the time adn just drops them when they hike a rail or want to take a few park runs without them.

poles a dumb in park, who uses them besides 5 people in the world, do you pole plant off lips? hurt thumbs also suck, but its mostly a personal preference, plus you can grab with all your fingers

im not exactly sure why people go no poles but i prefer no poles in the park. for me its easier, cant tell u why...this year i think i might just get some small poles so when i need poles i have them and in the park they are small enough so it feels like no poles

its simple:No Poles = "i wanna be like Pep"Poles = I ski more than just park.. i like moguls as well"im sure someone will say something dumb to this. but really its just a new trend happening in skiing.

just because you dont use poles doesnt mee you're trying to be pep, or andy, or tom wallisch. I prettymuch always ski sans poles, especially in the park. pole plants? are you 70 years old and ski with your feet stuck together? pole plants are un-neccessary, unless your trying to have 'proper form'..and then, well you're on your own on that one. its all preference, if you dont like the no-poles style, ski with poles. you're not making some kind of statement by claiming you ski with poles, the same as your not when you say you ski without poles. i film in the park, i dont use poles when i film, so i started skiing without poles when i wasnt filming, i'm not trying to get on the bandwagon, it just feels better, and more free. and to whoever may say its gay, you're honestly trying to argue that holding two shafts in your hands all the time is less gay than holding nothing? think of the options, without poles, you can hold a pair of tits in your hands if you like. with poles, well your stuck with two shafts so even if you wanted to hold some tits, you couldn't.

yeah people dont go no poles just cause they wanna be like pep.  no poles skiing existed before them they just made it popular.  I didnt drop my poles till i saw like half the people in the park without them and i thought i was missing out.   so i tried it and from then on skiing got so much better.  everything feels just soooo much more free and loose.

no poles is fun when you're just messin around in the park or on groomers, but i find that thier a neccessity when doing big mountain

I broke my poles on my second run this weekend and skied the rest of the day without poles. skiing down a hill is bad but doing jumps is soo much funner i find

I have been asked a bunch by snowboarder why the fuck skiers need poles, and i didnt have that good of an answer for them.

i'm really tempted to try riding without poles but i feel like my hands would be totally lost as to wtf to do with themselves. but i do see the appeal of spins and grabs without metal rods in your way

You can get such legit grabs without them and less swing weight when ur spinning. I learned to do a 360 without poles.

they dont figure it out when you scoot past them on the flats and they are one boot out hopping along all akward and sideways?

you can just skate without poles--

I go up with boarders and they don't complain or say anything about poles for one reason:

I give them the poles to push themselves when they are on the flats and look like dmbasses..that's it

as to the issue with no poles--i agree feels much more free and better balance for me i think

yeah poles are nice for that stuff, but its no reason to sacrafice the feeling you get, if you like it.   like its a pain in the lift lines sometimes, but its worth it cause its that much more fun when im skiing.

yea, i fucked my thumb with poles so now its no poles for the whole season! and plus only noobs cant ski without poles because they need poles to keep their balance forward

i went for my first full day at louise on saturday

our whole entire group went with out poles

so much fun, wasnt as sketchy as i though it would be

but it was fun

check out my photos

grabs would be easier, but if you were taught for 5 years on how to use a pole, it would feel comfortable

i rock no poles well over half the time im skiing, i broke my thumb last year and it hurt crazy bad to hold poles so i skied like 3 months without them just cause it was so natural, and i like it for when im learning new stuff and getting my grabs on lock

word up thanks for all the replies, i don't go on these forums much so sorry if this thread was redundant. sounds like a lot of people support that shit. I feel like it would be weird for me for a bit, but i think i'm gonna have to try it now to see if i have what it takes. i don't really give a fuck what people do cause like i said, if you're having fun, then you have accomplished the goal of skiing. so everybody have fun doing yo thang.

much love to the skiing community.

poles are not worthless to all the people that say they are. My poles help counterbalance my body when im doing grabs and spinning, poles also help to gain more speed and control my upper body. I guess you can learn to use no poles, but i think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Well I go no poles only occassionally and it's if I wanna learn a new grab but I don't wanna have to deal with doing it with poles yet so I take a few runs work on the grab then use my poles again...

personally i think its good for your skiing to drop them for a little while, just to get better balance.... but after that i like to ski with poles if i'm actualy skiing, but if I'm rinding switch in pow or trying 180's into pow for some reason i find poles to be quite a hinderance...... but all in all i think people should just accept other people for whatever they are doing and appreciate it for what it is

I dont understand why it matters. I feel like I've gotten a ton of hate, like people say "oh he still goes no poles" but I never went no poles because I wanted to be cool, its fun sometimes. people need to relax. all there is is skiing, which is fun, that's all anyone needs to know. deep breath

skiing with no poles is a lot of fun, grabbing is way easier and for some reason spinning on jumps feels way different, but i still feel like it looks rediculous, its really hard for me to people without poles seriously.

i personally think no poles looks really goofy, and i can't take them serious. it always looks like they are just messing around. I think tricks look a lot sicker when the performer is holding poles. Thats is my sole opinion.

i think rails are easer with poles and jumps with poles. but if you were like at a camp hiking a lot i would not use poles.

haha thats pretty good, i'm just going to add one thing, tight clothes also look good on girls who arent models, the same way no poles looks good on skiers who arent pros, but you're right about the fat chicks thing, some skiers just cant work the no poles look and they sometimes ruin it for everyone...

if you think about it, having big sticks attatched to your hand that do absolutely nothing in the park really is very "gay".
