Whats sooo wrong with ski movies?

NOTHING!

thats what. Theyre fuckin great!

Every two seconds there is another thread about how much farther ahead snowboard films are. Im like.. what the fuck? I dont think so! I dont think that someone on a snowboard is thinking so far out of the box that if you took two crews (one of skiers, one of snowboarders) to a spot, that snowboarders would magically find crazy magical ways to make it look better.

I just watched the absinthe trailer for ready (or whatever its called) and ya... its super sick. But then I saw the thread and was like .... waaaaah? How is it any better than a big budget ski movie? Sick shots, and creative use of the landscape for sure, but we got it like that too!

Im going to probably go on record in saying right now, on NS, that ski movies are just as good as snowboard movies. NO more, NO less. They both get me harder than a spanish test to go shred, and I am equally impressed with all the generic boom and heli shots.

The only difference I see right now, for sure, is that Snowboarders have gone all gorrilla, not in steeze, but in approach to finding spots. Its all secretive and hush hush. Finding little spots right in front of everyone that no one has hit yet. Its like theyre in nam, and they gotta go behind enemy lines to get their buddies out, be all mysterious... like the wind.

Im super stoked on all the up and coming am movies that are pushing the envelope with little to no cash. Just guys out having fun, getting serious about the craft, and killing all shit! Im ever more stoked on what is going to come out this season from the heavy hitters. Regardless of format. Session vids? cool! docu vids? cool! crew vids? cool! whatever you can put on a hard drive and edit is cool to me.

So I say this... stop hating on these guys that work so hard to put out amazing products every year. If the guys riding for poorboyz, or level 1, or whoever didnt like the idea... I bet most of em wouldnt hang with those companies.

Im stoked, hate the haters! go shred!

Agreed, besides you cant really compare because at this point skiing and snowboarding are two compleatly different sports so its impossible to tell who is 'better" at making films

It depends on the person, personally, I hate were its going. But my style is different. This is what I like/dislike:

Like

Skiing looking fun, with people around in the shots.

Editing matching the skiing shots

Pencil steeze off axis

Hate

Shot after shot of gangster poses

Dumb rap music unsynchronized with footage

The same trick over and over again( truck drivers)

See some people love what I hate and hate what love. Movies arent make for everyone, accept that others wont be impressed about a movie

i agree i dont' think one is better than the other but half the ski movies do put me to sleep or bore me with there slow mo shots and editing

Hey you have to have personal style too right?

But dont generalize the issue. Not all movies are like that at all.

There is quite a bit of diversity from company to company I think.

agreed, more or less. but you gotta admit the big budget board companies, always seem a little more creative&artistically inclined than big budget ski movies. as far as angles, camera work, editting etc. no hate no homo.

what r u talking about. skiing and snowboarding aren't "two completely different sports" they only difference is they are riding on one thing and us on two. one sport has fun on the mountain the same way the other does.

i don't know.

but i think that water polo edits are alot more epic than field hockey edits

it's not like they are two completely different sports.

water polo will always be better.

I'm just sick of people saying that skiing needs to be more like snowboarding. If I wanted to be involved in a snowboard-like industry, I would snowboard, not ski.

ahhh, touche!

I forgot to mention that we can do some sick shit that snowboarders cant do, and vice versa, so its always nice to see all things snow related... remember when butters were in the olympics?

thats sort of true because a lot of the big budget snowboard companies have a bigger budget than most ski companies. like in travis rice's new movie, "thats it thats all", they received a discovery channel camera set up for their heli.

it looks something like this.

uhm...that's it, that's all (travis rice)....i'd say that film is going to be pretty innovational...budget from redbull and quick..ive heard rumor or a triple back late 180....

the diff is skiers are taking themselves way too seriously, its all about being whimsical in snowboarding and not giving a fuck. Skiers are still at the level where they have to prove themselves to the greater snowsports community that they are as legit as snowboarders(as witnessed by this thread).

Snowboarding is also still alot more diverse in terms of different styles and subsets within the sport- gangsters, heshers, gangster-heshers etc, along with more diverse riding techniques.

SKiing will get to that pt, but in a few years. We're just starting to balkanize into our own little groups (HUNTING YETI, hot lunch, 4bi9) similar to what snowboarding was doing in 2004.

Thats NS's doing bud...

I dont see that in the movies at all. What you wear has nothing to do with how you grease.

If you dont think it takes a ton of effort to get generalized, youre not paying attention.

+karma for saying whimsical though.
