University of utah biatch, sick school right in salt lake city. If you are a ski bum, you will prolly have no future, and will end up dyin poor, if you go to college, you can get a good job and make a ton of money and retire early, or you can get a half assed job, make enough to live, and ski alot. I don't really see a ski bum as an option

Short Skis Suck, Long Skis Truck

Go to college so you can have a good job to make good money to go sking at good places on good skis. Also, i made friends with ski shop employees and got the hook up on my gear. I love the magical world of Employee purchases. I just got married this last summer (summer before senior year) and the government picked up all my tuition. Now i'm going to squaw for my spring break, 8 days in a ski in ski out lodge. College is awsome. My ski club also gets 3000 a year for ski trips. So we are going to winter park and copper for a weekend.

College is awsome. Like high school, only with beer, parties, no parents and shitty apartments.

If you love skiing that much, take a year off before college, ski all you can, then join the rest of us non-pro skiers who need an education to eek out a quality life.

go to college if you have a desire to learn something. dont spend 5000 or 30000 dollars on an education you dont care about now. if it takes a few years of ski bumming for you to realize why you need a college education do that. i hate hearing the obligatory 'go to college so you can get a good job and retire happily'... theres more to life than that. and in my opinion skiing and school dont mesh well, they never have for me.

i took a year off after highschool and taught skiing. dont do that unless you like minimum wage and little kids. im in college now, but i will only take partial loads during all winters until i graduate.

--

Do both dude, I went to university and now I'm in college, worked teaching teh whole time, raecd for the school, now i have my own freeski program and am like semi-pro ... it's all doable man.

University of Nevada at Reno is like 45 minutes away from Tahoe.....thats were i go.

-------------------

Have you heard of Sierra Nevada University? It's in north shore of Lake Tahoe, and right on the lake. There are like 5 mountains that are 20-40 minutes away......everything there is totally based around skiing

being a student allows you more time to ski than pretty much anything else you could be doing. (aside from bum.) trust me, it's really easy to schedule your classes around skiing... take fridays or mondays off, or take night classes and ski all day. plus, you get like 5 weeks off during winter that you can ski everyday. plus spring break. plus 3 or 4 months off in the summer to earn money for ski passes / gear. its a sweet deal. your parents will be proud, and you'll be on the hill more than ever.

i didn't come here with pants, and i'm not leaving with pants

dude...the way i see it, the ski bum thng is cool and a lotta fun..but you need soemthing more at age 40 than a beat up VW and blown knees and a lotta great memories. Memories dont put food on the table and keep you warm in the winter. For me, I got sick of driving a car without heat all winter. School pays off eventually...and you can get a fun job that don't make you sit behind a desk, theres lots out there! I'm a paramedic, enjoy that almost as much as skiing. Plus i can drive a car with heat that actually works!!!

WE TAKE THESE RISKS NOT TO ESCAPE LIFE, BUT SO THAT LIFE DOES NOT ESCAPE US

dude check out the university of Utah. yea the party sceen aint that rad, but if you hang out with only skiers you will be fine. snowbird and alta are 22 miles from campus, brighton is like 25 miles, park city is a bit more but it is on the highway and only takes 35 - 40 minutes. Plus there is no traffic in utah, and the dorms was the athleate village during the olympics. ie they are tight dorms. and once you get an ID you can just hit up the bars. anyway you take 12 credits in the winters and ski all the time and you are so tired from skiing you won't want to party that hard.

Used to go to sierra nevada college. ya the location is sick as hell but the education, girls, and parties arnt. I go to the university of nevada reno now. It's still close to the mountains, you get a good education, and theres more chicks and parties.

Three Flow Through

i have an additional question.. im danish and moving to spauw next year to ski and work for a season, i have whats like a high school education - im 17.. after a yaer of skiing i'll need to either go home and study, or atay find some sort of education or career to start on - but i have no idea about my options???

ahahahahah, IceKey, i think you just proved you've never lived in a ski town in your life.

Don't listen to those guys, I went to university and am going to college now. It a wicked party (and you learn shit too). But i managed to ski three days a week every week and now I'm sponsored and have my own program at my hill. Do it up man, teaching is a great way to get fere passes and secure gas and booze money. So is hosting keggers at your chalet.

college is so much fun...you should go to school just take as few credits as possible or go part time. you can always take semesters off too. right now i'm at montana state university and it works out for me i only go to classes on tuesday and thursday and i ski every other day of ther week, that is my next semesters schedule. it can be done...if you aren't at school you'd have to have a job which would take up more time. trust me do school, it's fuckin awesome

........................................

I'm sitting gettin my brain examed like i'm a deranged man with the strangest plan......

Take a year off...

Then study...

And if youre really keen on skiing, ski in the vinter/autumn and study in the summer and fall.

Thats what Im doing, and what a whole lot of people I know aswell.

You can even bring your books to the mountains if you're planning on living there for the season.

PS: Danes are good skiers too!

Yeah, i go to U nevada reno as well, I never knew that many people on here go there. Definitely a decent school, LOTs of girls, and close to tahoe.

if you live realively close to a mountain or have a place to stay near a mountain then go with tuesday, thursday classes. you get your shit done and have plenty of time to ski

h3o films

this is a silly question.. future or skiing? Sure, we all love skiing... but you will need to somehow pay for it later.. So unless you go to college and get a decent job, your going to have an interesting time skiing your whole life.. Don't ruin your future by skipping school for skiiing. You can easily do both.. Find a school out west.

Find a school that has a good amount of courses offered in summer semester then go to school summer & fall ski bum during the spring.

Im going to Montana state, which has bridger bowl 17 min away and bigsky 45-1 hour away. I schedualed my classes on tues & thursday, which leaves me plenty of time to ski. Utah would also be another place to check out.

lots of great choices listed above...U of Utah, Nevada U, U of Montana in bozeman, all great, also look into Portland university, U of Washington, U of Puget Sound and if your looking for something exotic look at Simon and Frazier or the U of BC up in canada...

I got to UC Davis, study fuckin' engineering, bum rides with the gay racer team, and ski 3 days a week. Can't beat it. It's really all about money, but if you conserve summer money and always think about winter, once your pass and equipement is payed for, you're set. As far as going to school or not, it's all about finding a happy place in life no matter what that entails.

go to u of m in bozeman and go skiing at bridger bowl every weekend

oh yeah, i guess i was wrong, i dont know what i was thinking. you better drop 10 grand + on school or else you might not get your cubicle in middle management. two of the richest people i know didnt go to college. a university degree is a signal to the corporate world that you are a happy, productive little cog in the corporate wheel. go to school to learn, to truly educate yourself. there are infinite opportunities and going to straight to college isnt necessarily the best solution for you. please, everyone, think dont follow.

You really need to find a college that has skiing that is really close. That way you can at least ski half days, ect. I wouldnt go to Portland, hood is too far of a drive from the college. If you have any questions about Montana State University, just message me. Do you have any ideas on what you want to study? If you are fresh out of highschool, you should go be a ski bum for a year.
