What's on your mind - Ladies edition

For the past month I've eaten between 800 and 1200 calories a day, worked out 1-2 hours 5 times a week, and have been walking to and from school every day(about 2 miles each way) and somehow I've still gained weight. What the actual fuck...

Ugh, my job these days. I work in a pediatrician's office, and recently to make more money, they've started taking appts after the scheduled work day. Which means the ENTIRE staff now has to stay late on days that they book extras. I understand emergency appts, but I'm not going to stay late cause some kid has a runny nose.

800 calories is wayy too low girl! You've got to get it up it to even more than 1200 probably. It all depends on your height and metabolic rate but if your body isn't getting enough calories it will go into starvation mode which means it won't burn any fat or any of your calories, boom weight gain. It's alot about what you're putting into your body, too. It's so much eating low calorie foods that will make you lose weight, they'll just make you feel hungrier faster. It's leafy greens, full proteins, whole grains, and fats! Don't skip the fats! And alcohol really screws it up especially alcohol in excess.

What's worked best for me is a few things. (I've lost 30 pounds)

1) I workout my muscles. I'm less cardio more High intensity reps of pushups, squats, abs everything. I do a program by Kayla Itsines and she kind of rules my world and kicks my ass.

2) When I really want to feel lean I cut out all alcohol and focus on my diet. Abs are made in the kitchen and you can't out work a bad diet. I make sure I get enough of each food group everyday, carbs everything ( i don't believe in cutting out bread because as soon as you eat it again....you bloat) Everything in moderation.

3)Positive attitude. No shit, the happier I am and more positive I am about my body, the better i feel, the leaner I think I look. I gained those 30 pounds when I was 18 because of an extremely unhealthy relationship with a boy, and it took me a long time to get over it and lose what I had gained.

4) It doesn't happen overnight. That I still struggle with. It's all about consistency and eventually the rest will come.

At my most fit moment this spring when I was really focusing on everything, I was eating over 2,000 calories a day, when you work hard your body needs all that! Just don't starve yourself girl :) it will all happen!

That was super winded sorry, I just kinda passionate about it!

WOAH you need to be eating more. Your body isn't liking all that exercise and little food.

It seems I have taken some pretty shitty advice from someone who clearly doesn't know what they were talking about. God damn, lol. My roommate is a nutrition major and she was like the only way to lose weight is to have a net loss in calories and she told me 800-1200 was ideal... clearly she is an idiot ha. Wow this all makes so much sense!

I also just came back to college and have been drinking a little more than i'd like to admit. Kinda over the back-to-school parties and wanna focus more on school so hopefully cutting back on that helps. It's also nice because I can buy my own groceries so it's easier to eat better.

I will definitely need to adjust a little bit more. But i've heard in the past if you make it more into a lifestyle change it way easier to stick to than "i need to do this this and this until i get here." Cause there's not really an endpoint its a perpetual kind of thing.

Thanks for the advice! I definitely gotta change a few things!

Yeah she's right about the deficit but if you dip below 1200 that's the min your body can function normally and there's a bunch of ways to lose weight! The more muscle you have, the quicker you burn fat! Drink lots of water too. You should be drinking(in ounces) your body weight everyday. When you're dehydrated your body suffers. Good luck girl! Stick to it!

Just my 2 cents.. Your body needs 1200 calories to function with your metabolism.. That's like lying in your bed asleep for 24 hours. Never mind exercising.. Walking to and from school.. Etc. etc. coming from a NUTR minor and d1 athlete (for one more month!) would love to help you meal/ workout plan feel free to message me!!!

All true, especially the water part. When I first started firefighting I thought the harder I worked and the less I ate, I'd lose more weight. It turned out what I ate, and feeding my body to do the work it needs to do was more important. If i'm out working my chainsaw and hiking for an entire day in 100 degrees, I need WAY more than 2000 calories a day to do my work well, some wildland firefighters say closer to 5000. If I'm driving around in the engine doing nothing, I can function on about 1400 or less, especially if it's good stuff. I still have a terrible vice for craft beer, but everything in moderation right?

I've seen more of a difference from strength training than pure cardio as well. Both are important, but don't neglect those muscles girl. I really have come to like P90x, it keeps things interesting and varied. We do those at the station with hikes and running thrown in throughout the week and I feel pretty damn good from it.

I have a friend named Cody and my friend and I call him Cody Boppers. I dont know why we do. But sometimes out of no where I will think of "Cody Boppers" and feel the need to post "Cody Boppers" on his facebook wall for lawls. I dont know why I get so much enjoyment from it. It just has a nice ring to it

Alright, I just need to get this off my chest.

I'm considering giving up ski racing and becoming the dirtiest, smelliest, park rat ever. My whole life I've been stuck in that tight ass fucking speed suit so it's time for a goddamn change. Fuck it. Maybe I'll even start snowboarding. Then I can get dreadlocks and live in the woods. Haha jk. Maybe... Anyway. After this season my racing days are more than likely over. Yeah, I'm bawling like a lil bitch right now but I couldn't be happier with this realization.

Buy some baggy pants, burn your poles, and never look back

I fell so hard for a boy who is a pro BMXer. He's cool, we get along super well and have soooo much fun. But it sucks when when he's constantly traveling to train and stuff. Especially since there isn't much for him here during the winter he goes down south a lot. FUCK. Such is life though. Not sure if I should wait or just be friends. I suck at relationships lol.

Awesome!! I'm the traveling one in a 3 year long relationship, I promise it's doable. Give him a shot and don't worry so much about "sucking at relationships", just go with it. Cheers sister, here's to the best of luck.

Thanks!! He's awesome so we'll see what happens. I hope it works out but he also is out living his dream, I definitely don't want to come between that. But we will see(: So far so good, eh? haha

It's doable for sure. And at first it sucks, a lot. Getting use to someone always leaving early in a relationship is hard, but it gets easier. And if you like each other enough and have enough trust then it's easy-peasy. Most of the time I don't even really think about it now. Those times apart gives you time to enjoy your alone time and passions too! I always find a new task for me to do when Andy leaves for a long time, or I just dive into school. I hope it goes somewhere for you girl! Relationships can be so exciting :)

Ugh yeah it's been way too warm here in Minnesota this month. Only seen morning frost once. I'm getting reeeal antsy for winter. I've almost worn my winter jacket a couple times, with the hope that maybe sheer willpower will persuade winter to come. Normally preseason at my home hill would start halloween weekend but I'm worried it'll be too warm for them to make snow

I offered my dad a discounted trip to Whistler with us in January. I think he wants to go and I'm being really shitty about it.

I love skiing with my dad but it's Whistler and I'm gonna be partying a lot. I would feel awful ditching my dad in a foreign country for my friends. but I dont want my dad to see me drunk. I don't know what to do. I also plan to do my own thing and meet up with NS'ers. I would feel bad leaving my dad behind on a Mountain like Whistler. UGH. But I love skiing with my dad): I dont know what to do.

I feel like a shitty person for not wanting him to go

Take your Dad.

He already knows you drink and whatnot-parents aren't stupid so go have a beer or 9 with him and enjoy it. Don't ditch him. You never know what tomorrow could bring and you may not think that way now but when you get older (fuck, I hate saying this shit) you'll wish you could do more with your Dad.

Mine is still around but we've lived so far apart from each other for the past 10 years or so. I'm lucky if I see him once a year so you can imagine how excited I am to see him in a few weeks when he comes up on a random work trip.

I'd give anything to be able to go skiing with him again, like when I was younger but he just doesnt do it anymore. So, now we all get together, have a huge ass ridiculously over priced dinner with a shit ton of booze and then head out to the bars and get even more hammered. Enjoy it.

True. You're right. He waiting up for my little ass for years when I was learning and always made it a point to go every weekend when I was little. He took me to Breck 3 years ago too. It's the least I could do. Maybe we can bring my uncle or something. I think he would like that and I wouldn't need to worry if I wanted to go off for a little on my own. We will see.(:
