Since we're on the subject of period symptoms some of you may want to look into magnesium supplements. My day to day life has gotten a lot better since I started taking magnesium (glisinate) particularly my period cramps, anxiety levels and sleep quality.
From Wikipedia: 57% of the US population does not meet the US RDA for dietary intake of magnesium.
Causes of magnesium deficiency include diet, alcohol abuse, chronic stress, poorly controlled diabetes, excessive or chronic vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include hyperexcitability, muscular symptoms (cramps, tremor, fasciculations, spasms, tetany, weakness), fatigue, loss of appetite, apathy, confusion, insomnia, irritability, poor memory, and reduced ability to learn. Moderate to severe magnesium deficiency can cause tingling or numbness, heart changes, rapid heartbeat, continued muscle contractions, nausea, vomiting, personality changes, delirium, hallucinations, low calcium levels, low serum potassium levels, retention of sodium, low circulating levels of parathyroid hormone. I was getting really bad muscle twitches in my eye as well as legs and arms, bad period cramps, poor sleep, apathy, fatigue, irritability, all of which have gotten a lot better now that I take magnesium. I also drink alcohol a fair amount, which depletes your magnesium even more. You may think your daily vitamin has got you covered but most daily's have magnesium oxide in them which is not easily absorbed. You need magnesium citrate, glisinate, malate or one of the other more bioavailable forms.
My doctor had told me before when I complained about period symptoms that I should take magnesium, but they didn't specify type, so I took oxide and didn't notice any improvements. Make sure you get the right kind that works for you, you may have to try a few.
Sorry for sounding like a commercial, I was not paid to write this, I swear.
