What's missing from our winter schedule this year?

Hi Everyone,

Grete here, member since 1999 and really into skiing. I have a question, as I am planning my winter, I am wondering what is missing from the ski industry right now? Do we need an Open again? A new movie company? A Parkasaurus? X Games? What is it that can bring us more together on snow? I would love to help create whatever this is. So just comment below... thanks : )

Maybe new competitions that isnt about fis points but more for fun

Parkasaurus comeback would be epic, we need a legit film company to start making yearly films again. The market is so over saturated with content I’ve lost interest in watching everyones yearly “short” that’s 3 minutes of skiing and 10 minutes of b-roll look at how creative I am with my cinematography bullshit. More contests with bigger prize money that are an open style format. It’s been 4 years since natural selection has started and skiing needs it’s own type of big mountain event that’s not the FWT. redbull cold rush or orage masters type events. A proper podcast would certainly help engagement in the community. Two planker pod is alright but I don’t really care to listen to a recorded FaceTime conversation or phone call. Skiing needs its own show like the bomb hole.

id like to see more crew/team things. some sort of event where its squads going head to head and each squad is like 2 dudes and 2 chicks. could be armada vs faction or red bull vs monster or the bunch vs. traveling circus, etc etc. i would just like to see things move away from the solo comp/social media realm and more into a camaraderie. less me, more we.

Isn’t this sort of the new format that X Games is moving toward? Not The Bunch vs. Traveling Circus but at least the Armada vs. Faction/Red Bull vs. Monster idea

yeah but x games is only semi core lol.

heres a brainstorm: would be cool to have 8 teams in a bracket and the first round each team gets 2 weeks to film a big mountain video maybe at a sponsored resort or something. then 2 weeks for fan voting. 4 teams go to the next round then get 2 weeks to film a street video. 2 weeks for voting and then the final 2 teams meet up for some sort of team style game of slvsh.

Relatable stuff always hits better for me. On that note heres my idea:

A series where a local ripper shows a pro their mountain, the hits that sort of thing. Easily repeatable, and I'm realizing writing this that Sage already has this with, 'Let's take a Lap' just up the number of episodes, I love every one of those

Open contests or jams with a gimmick. Non USASA slopestyle would fuck so hard and I would love a rail jam that was like one boxzilla instead 5 of the most vanilla park features ever (like red bull buttercup)

More 12 ft pipes

more rope tows

more crazy park shoots for pros to get wild on

All of these as well. Just more pipe in general, literally the coolest facet of skiing and apparently half the population of skiers don't have access to one and it bums me out

We need to get steepsteep commentating an event this year. Dudes got hella passion for the sport and his commentary adds value to whatever he’s watching

More public hike parks!

Barring that, more pirate hike parks! Set up a feature in the woods/on a hill/in a skatepark somewhere and let the homies know.

As mentioned in thread, more ropetows and hike parks. We need more events too. In particular, events of a more local nature where talented kids without ski sponsors can actually win $ or skis.

I thought there were a bunch of really dope videos last year. Yeah some were too heavy on the broll and were kinda boring to me, but generally I prefer the bigger budget videos less overall. Once you start throwing a bunch of money at a project there's more pressure to get a return for your investment. And then you gotta try to make it more appealing to more people, and then you get something like faction's abstract, which had good skiing and dogshit creative direction.

I don’t disagree there’s great content every year and it’s free so not really complaining. I’m not talking some large scale tgr type production company that’s completely out of touch with the majority of people skiing. Meathead films were some of my favorites growing up on the east coast because it was relatable. The faction movie was ass but the premise of a team movie I am all for like most action sports have always done and skiing has always been behind on. Oil & water and daycare were great team films. Brands would probably see more interest from those. ON3P really blew up when the first 4 team edits were dropping. Was just always nice having those annual films to look forward to.

Forre, magma, strictly, Oli, CL, and Harlaut all literally make annual films and they are the biggest crews in skiing rn, im really confused by what ur trying to say tbh

And I know oli is a person but he films a lot of the same people every year so I'm just counting him in that mix

Broadcasted amateur “rail jams” would be sick, like street style but it’s not the same pros winning every year and having somewhere to watch it live

I want a king of the road style competition with different teams doing skiing based challenges and dares while on a road trip, I fucking love that show

anything that resembles tell a friend tour is a good thing- the grassroots approach is it. would love to see more resorts/stops, more girls involved, maybe something like it in europe, and just more energy put into that sort of format for engaging the community. could scale it up by including more traditional rail jams as well in addition to the on hill engagement.

special setup for a pro/am event. everyone gets to ride, but you get to showcase the top talent. have a good film crew to recap the whole event

I love this idea Laura! Back when I was first on here, I remember seeing ski shops having local rail jams every fall. I am not sure how they figured it out, but every ski shop had a rail jam. And it was so much fun watching the content over NS.com We had a few events in Norway too like a big air in Oslo, random rail jams and even a water ramp thing into a shipping dock yard. So lots of great idea on this thread! Please, keep it coming.

I’ve said it before but I’ll repost it here: Anyone who works in the ski industry NEEDS to check out what Stab Magazine has been doing with their surf media properties. They are killing it, whenever they drop new content it’s all anyone in the lineup is talking about so I know it’s got reach. I think a lot of it would translate really easily to skiing.

1. Stab Highway (Thrasher King of the Road ripoff), get a bunch of up-and-comers and set them team challenges on a road trip through a particular ski region.

2. How Surfers Get Paid, has basically become part inside-baseball and part historical record of pro-surfing. Guests are current and former pros and industry execs.

3. Stab High, a surf contest where the only judging criteria is landing the biggest most consequential and committed air. Skiing could have a QP contest run similarly. There’s also fan voting in the finals now.

4. Stab in the Dark, a pro-surfer tests blank boards provided by top shapers in a double blind test to see what’s the best. Non-scientific but fun to watch. Also, the Electric Acid Test where shapers build the weirdest possible boards for the same format of test.

Media has changed a lot since 1999 when the NS movement started. Right now Stab has the best operation in action sports, by far. I’d love to see skiing have something similar with that kind of reach.

We need you to hit JOI jumps haha

But I’d say more opens and events like JOI/JOSS. I know Jossi was trying to do something similar for a bit with the JWI

Another vote to bring back Parkasaurus. Bring it back to its original format, unique jumps rails etc. Also a throwback to what the first ones were link in terms of tricks etc. I think a no doubles and no spins over 900 would be awesome to watch

I'm interested to see what happens with Shaun White's Snow League. Could this be a scalable format akin to Street League? Will athletes get paid well again?

I've said it before, I think a cool contest format would be a "Total Skier" tour. One stop is park, next stop is pipe, next stop is downhill or GS, next stop is big mountain, etc. You could even incorporate more niche things like ski-mo, nordic, or moguls. Discipline lineup could change year to year - maybe voted on by the completed season's top 100 qualifying athletes, etc..

Something like west coast sessions or just some form of meeting up. I have seen that there have been a lot more focus on ski movies and having events and small festivals around them. Would be sick to see something like west coast sessions pop up, i would be down to hop on a plane for something like that

It’d be rad if there was a hotdog skiing event where we literally cook a bunch of hotdogs out on the hill and have a meetup of fun loving skiers. Public day at WCS was kinda like this with a tent and BBQ right in the middle of the park at Timberline. Recently I tagged along to a downhill skateboard meetup with my fiancé and they had a tent and bbq’d 420 hotdogs on hill. Doesn’t necessarily have to be hot dogs but a tent or other rally spot with coffee or pizza or whatever is pretty much all that is needed to bring cohesion to a meetup free ride type event. I’m a monoskier and the Cinco de Mono event is a great little grass roots event where we designate a specific parking lot and a couple people get there early to set up a bbq spot and hang up a banner on their vehicles. We meet for breakfast then split off and go ride and then get together for a group photo at lunch. People go back to the rally spot in the lot to chill throughout the day. Fun way to meet people and just take some laps. For NS it would be ideal to get the ski area to let us set up in the park so people chilling can watch other skiers hit features

a comp where there are no doubles and no spins would be so sick. im only 17 so idk if this has existed before. also someone explain parkasaures to me.

my home mountain is Okemo and we used to have a sick rail jam every year. then they got rid of it during covid. then last year they brought it back and it was sick. so many riders showed up and a crazy amount of spectators, but this year they didn't do it.

it was basically a super park type event (back when that stuff happened all the time!) where riders would just session a bunch of cool features, and parkasaurus's gimmick was giant inflatable dinosaurs being around. not the best picture ever here but it gives you the idea

for better and for worse it was a big event and you'd see tons of shots from it in movies and magazines for a lot of riders. i can't remember who was the big sponsor behind it. freeze magazine i think?

Not the best video but this shows a few highlights from the first parkasaurus. Freeze magazine was amazing and put the event on.

ill age myself a bit here, the 2007 RTC was what spurred my love for park and street skiing. that was the first time I saw cohesive content about street skiing specifically. up until then, you’d see some random shots of people hitting handrails, but they were rare and lacked the storytelling/vibes that really capture some aspects of skiing. also, Ahmet Dadali was the coolest dude ever at that point lol.

[tag=123327]@Newschoolers[/tag] could easily put on something like the RTC, teams given a list with various sects of skiing involved. could have things like most kinked rail, most consecutive pillows, no poles at an FIS event. armada vs. faction or on3p vs. vishnu could work very well for a round 1, and if the list is doable during everyone’s normal season, why not?

MAKE skiing FUN again
