What's happenin?

I witnessed something today that will forever change my perspective on the progression of this sport. I'm not at liberty to discuss what I witnessed. But what happened has changed my perspective of skiing and what we risk every day on the hill.

I'm a little disturbed by the progression of this sport. Jumps are getting bigger, rails are getting more gnarley, and the consequences of this evolution have been prominent this year with all the injuries we've seen. I just want to know where it stops. When will people or will people ever realize that they've gone to far. Is it worth the risk? I don't know. I think yes and no for a million different reasons.

I think I'm just worried that our sport has turned into somewhat of a daredevil stunt show. Maybe that's why we get mocked and scoffed at by the general public. I don't know. I just hope that maybe we could put our priorities more into the progression of style and creativity and less into just plain sketchier sh*t.

I really don't want to see this many injuries again in one season. This has been a really creepy year. But I'm not sayin "be careful" or anything... cause you know I'm all about hittin that sh*t. just use your head.

nothin but love,

shidasha

unfortunately, sports are inherently dangerous. Extreme sports tend to be extremely dangerous. The trick is to take the necessary precautions when doing dangerous things. But it's a thin line...

ok for one YES IT IS WORTH IT. if it wasnt worth the risk why would we do it? having the possibility of getting owned makes it all more fun, its actually hard. its not like curling, you can actually get hurt skiing. hits will keep getting bigger no matter what, dont say its a bad thing cause it only makes the sport better

i feel the exact same way and it's really refreshing to hear someone else say it for once. this season has been sooo gnarly with all the accidents and shit. i've seen so many friends get broke off and recently one just passed away. i've had my share of injuries and it has changed my perspective on not just skiing, but life as well.

on the other hand, the risks of skiing make it challenging and unique so not everyone can get out there and do it. i'm not really sure where this sport is heading

"I just hope that maybe we could put our priorities more into the progression of style and creativity and less into just plain sketchier sh*t."

I couldnt agree more. There is a HUGE lack of creativity in this sport. Be an individual and do something different!

shidasha i couldn't agree more. certain people just don't get it though and it messes shit up for the riders.

how about you tell us what you saw, your basically implying you saw a bad crash, and if your actually trying to warn people from trying stupid shit nothing is better than a good example to show why you shouldnt be doing stupid shit, and i couldnt think of any reason not to share something that would help discourage people from doing dumb shit and killing themselves

agreed.... ^ if it is a gnarly crash and nothing more then please tell...obviously if its something really really bad then maybe dont broadcast it for your own reasons..

k skiing should have no limits, some in this thread sayed we need to put limits on it, and yet i heard many complaining on how there are limits on the comps now. Also tell us what you saw or dont start a controversial thread you idiot

nothing wrong with hitting bigger and bigger shit as long as its within the actual riders skill level. but i agree this sport could use way more originality

i agree. the sport should be pushed and would be a lot safer if people stayed within their skill level. it always scares me when i see people that can hardly ski go fast towards a jump because it just screams disaster.

i think that what you say has merit, but if never never step outside our comfort zone how will we ever improve

progressing outside your 'comfort zone' doesn't mean breaking yourself off on retarded jumps. skiing isn't going to go anywhere if everyone's got broken backs and blown out knees.

yes that is true to both of you who quoted my post, but for these guys who are pros, out side of there comfort zone is massave jumos, do they have to keep getting bigger, no they dont, will that yes

Skiing is like drugs, more we do it, the less feeling we get out of it. The only solution is to go to more highs to get the same thrill

or outside their comfort zone might be nollie lip or switchlip on a handrail.. doesnt need to be huge

you can get your head fucked just as easily , if not more, on rails.

I think its stupid to try and legislate the limits that people can push themselves to. Most of the pro injuries (at least from what I know of them) this year were super-flukey, not a result of someone charging a 120 footer. And think of the JOI - biggest jump in a comp (claimed) and its the safest looking booter ever.

u are whats wrong with NS...... tasteless jokes on a serious thread..... i hope all the people that were killed in the park come back to haunt u

I agree,

I feel that everyone can do what they want and should do what they want. But, when it comes down to why you ski, the answer is hopefully "for fun" right? Sometimes I need to take a step back and make sure I'm not doing things for the wrong reasons, I'm doing them because it's fun. That being said, pushing your limits can be fun, just try not to let other peoples opinions sway your own.

all the girls that have answered have said that we need limits and all the guys have said that the sport is about pushing yourself. that's kinda how guys and girls ski. guys usually know the risks and are willing to push themselves even if they get hurt. almost all the girls i've skied with are the opposite. they get hurt trying something and just stop. skiing is all about pushing yourself and finding out what you can do on those two sticks you're attatched to. you know you could get hurt, but that just makes it that much better when you stomp something and ride away cleanly

Progression needs to change directions, but I honestly can not see this happening until a big name pro dies. It is a horrible thing to say but how else do you convince the entire skiing community to be more careful?

progression is progression. people will do what they want because that's what skiiing is all about.

i'm not saying i'm not willing to get hurt, that's what you ask for if you are going to ski and push yourself. i'm taking about what this thread was started about. stupidly built jumps that are supposedly 'pushing' the sport but they end up breaking people off, BIG TIME. the progression shouldn't stop, but don't ignore the style and technicality side of it either.

I think she's referencing the recent crash of Derek spong. And i agree with her. When is it gonna stop? i often wonder about progression.

this thread pisses me off so much. i hate it. it makes us all sound like a bunch of pussies. actually let me rephrase, it makes you all sound like a bunch of pussies

this sums it all up. nothing more you need to say. where the hell would freeskiing be now, if back in the 80's/90's when freeskiing was taking off, everyone was a bunch of pussys and didn't try anything new/different for fear of getting fucked up

Guys.... i might think deeper than everyone... but think about it? What is the purpose of sports in general? Sliding in a downard direction with sticks on your feet, riding across metal, and seeing how much air you can put between yourself, and the ground, while flipping and spinning???? Are you serious? When you actually think about it, it's absurd. You can have just as much fun on small features, rather than HUGE dangerous ones. the funnest sessions i've ever had are on little features. People are seriously getting worked. I love progression, but sometimes it's not worth it. Like when you see that weekend warrior at the top of the park, all huffing and puffing because he's about to try a backfip. Is that fun? That is a stunt, and not skill.

hahaha dude you went way too deep i hate you now. ok i can play that game too. think about it....walking?? seriously whats the point of it. putting 1 foot in front of the other just to get somewhere. i mean how overrated is walking. it can be dangerous, sometimes you trip and break your ankle. is it really worth the risks?

Dude....you got me all wrong. Haha, though i admire you for that, you got my point... It's just wierd, how much risk people go through just to nail that trick, or get the shot, or whatever they're doing. Walking, is a mode of transportation... skiing can be, but you sorta go nowhere. just up the hill on a silly crate/box thing that hangs hundreds of feet up..... and then you come back down. haha, me and my friends always joke about how wierd skiing is. i think one time he was just real stoned, and just analyzed the hell outta it.

Thats good. I am whats wrong with NS? Thats quite the statement. I am flattered. But to wish all the dead park skiers come back to haunt me? thats funny. Thats almost as funny as you being the fattest chick i've ever seen ski. You were also drugged. Thats funny too because your fat, ugly, and I don't see why people would ever want to do that other than the sheer fun of fucking with a fat chick.

it'll be interesting to see where this sport goes, but I totally agree with you. It is an extreme sport, and as the sport progresses, as the jumps get bigger, and as the tricks grow more dangerous and difficult, the more injuries are likely to occur. I've seen my share of injuries this year, and I even know of a friend of my friends who died recently. Yet we keep doing it...perhaps it is the very risk that draws us into skiing. The risk is what makes it exciting, what makes it so much fun. Skiers are adrenaline junkies, and we as a general population tend to love doing crazy and gnarly things regardless of the potential danger we put ourselves in.
