What's going on in BST?

yeah, we banned 41 accounts for spamming BST in the last day/today

bots suck, and we're working on ips & such

Seriously it's everywhere this is so lame .

P.s. I know it's not your fault mods, just never understood spam like this and it rustles my jimmies

Yeah sorry, we're under a big spam attack. We're fighting with them right now trying to figure out how they're creating the accounts. Hopefully our solutions today mean that this won't happen again.

Worst case scenario it will take us a few days to figure out how they're exploiting registrations and things will go back to normal for a few years.

Every few years we get a really over-enthusiastic spammer who sneaks through our defenses.

I mean, it's a computer. I don't know everything about it, but from what I've gathered they probably hunt around forums with easy registration systems, not the basic forum setups etc and then attack whatever they can get into. As Doug said, this happens every couple years to NS when tech changes or some sort of software is created, whatever it is, and they can get back in and spam hard.

The entire reason behind it escapes me, but this shit happens everywhere. Maybe it's some random dude in india getting paid $x for every post he makes with that info? Which to me was obviously code or something, again it's completely out of my realm of thought, maybe someone on here has more intel about why spammers do what they do.

from what i know (quite little), what you said is pretty accurate.

it's hard to imagine but the fact that spam still exists on a large scale i believe proves that it's successful enough to be making some people money and therefore to continue

mostly bots, im sure, which means it's not as big a time/money investment as you might initially think

they prob have better luck on sites with older demographics tho, people our age can spot 99% of spam from a mile away. not so with older folks

We tend to get spared from spam issues most of the time because NS is on a custom platform. Spammers make money from volume. It takes *LOTS* of spam for them to make any money. So they need to cast as big a net as possible. That usually means developing spam tools for popular software like WordPress, vBulletin, etc.. The bigger the install base, the more spam their tool can potentially spew.

Since NS is on a custom platform, somebody has to configure a spambot specifically for us. Whenver it happens I feel special, like we were worth somebody's attention. :) Luckily, tweaking registration or forum posting a big will break their tools, and it's often not worth fixing since we are just one site. Until somebody else comes along...

They've been nuked. Sorry, we've added new tools which has slowed it down, but it hasn't stopped it completely. I've got a few more ideas for how to slow them down further.

Damnnnnnnnn they're back at it again with the spam

out of curiosity, how sure are we that malware can't be embedded in posts any more?

since there's 100% a reason for it. Maybe there's an exploit they're trying to take advantage of that might make it possible to infect certain computers running certain browsers with malware. The more they post the more chance they get the right people clicking on the threads.
