What's going on at sugarloaf?

Ski Patrollers rock, from what i heard and saw today the Sugarloaf crew did a great job of helping the injured and getting everone down. You guys deserve a big thank you.

Ha. Apparently a chair fell off on the rickety ass double chair that goes to the top of the mountian at the local hill here a few days ago... Luckily it was blowing 60, and the lift was closed, but the chair just lost grip on the cable and dropped like a sack of bricks, 46 feet to the snow below. Weird stuff.

Either way... the fact that they had to belay people from 30-40 feet or so is nothing like what happened when the squaw cable car had an accident in the 80's...

^that's a 10" thick cable slicing the cabin in half... at ultra high tension. The lift is a 3 cable design, and the main cable just dropped in the wind. That cabin had to be hundreds of feet up above the ground... which would have either been a massive death cliff, or extremely rugged, rocky terrain.
Ever since this accident, squaw has been ULTRA tentative to run their lifts with high winds... Doesnt help that most of their non-high speed lifts are still old Yans...

im kinda confused as to how the life derailed, all the lifts i know look attached to the cable at the top? but anyways thats super freaky and hope everyone's okay. props to alll the patrollers!

^the chair didnt come off the cable, the cable fell off the wheels at one of the towers. at least from what i understand.
I couldnt even imagine that, especially if you have the bar down and the chair hitting the ground, you would just get mangled

I assume they have it for just such instances. Or if they need to shuttle things to/from elsewhere on the hill during days when they can't run or disturb the lifts. Always a convenient thing to have around.

there's a restaurant mid mountain that does fancy dinners at night, and they use the cat to bring people up there

crazy stuff...i was there trying to figure out why the hell the upper mountain lifts were closed until i heard the cable derailed

just glad i was lapping the 20 inches of pow off the super quad when it happened

also, just listened to the fox news cast...and F*CK THAT FIRST NEWSCASTER!!!!

so much bs in her segment. my fave quote "now the lifts were about 15 feet off the ground, and when you add in the chair lift its like another 15 feet that people would have to fall"
if the chair lift is 15ft off the ground, and your feet sit 2 feet below the lift (+ the weight of riders sagging the lines a bit) wouldnt you be a little bit closer to the ground...and NOT 15 ft. higher???

kinda amazing how much shit people can make up and how much of it we actually listen to simply b/c we dont know facts and they exploit people on that aspect
