so i keep getting this message that tells me to reformat my ext hard drive which sorta scares me ... i'm scared it might crash or i might just randomly loose all my stuff which is like 55 gigs of music which would crush me ...

what should i do ?

i was thinking of possibly just getting all of the stuff i really wanted and putting it in a zip. or a rar. file and maybe putting those files on a thumb drive if they can fit after being compressed ..... please help

that would work if you can get it on a usb drive. or you could burn the important files on a cd or dvd depending on how much memory is needed

You might want to transfer them to your computers hard drive(if space allows) then format your external then transfer back. I know i keep all my music/movies on an external just so its portable and keeps my computer free for other things.
Also, you could go to best buy or wahtever, ask about their return policy, im pretty sure its not bad there, buy a new external, transfer all yuor stuff to the new one, format your old one, transfer back to old one, return the new one "un used" sneaky sneaky.

Buy a 120gb usb 2 drive for $60, that's a cheap price to pay to make sure your music is safe.

yah either get a thumb drive, or for that price you could probably even get a whole new 500 gig external
but dont go compressing all your shit, it might fuck up the quality of all your music
also there are a lot of cheap and maybe even free services online that let you backup your stuff on remote servers

Well its an idea at least, maybe not the best of course. But obviously he is worried about money here otherwise he would just buy a new one. Thats why i said he would need to check the return policy. Just trying to help a guy out dude.

online remote storage, or just get a second external. storage is so cheap these days, its worth it.

If your computer can write dual layer dvd's you can burn 9 gig dvd's. It's a little bit of bitch to do but you can back up a bunch of shit pretty cheaply that way.

That's the way to go if you reAlly dont wanna lose anything.

Having another HD doesn't help you if they're both plugged in and theres a power surge. Just be sure to store them in a case out of heat and sunlight, DVDs can go bad too.

so for some god for saken reason everytime i try to copy my music folder to another ext hard drive some random error keeps coming up and not working ... fml

if i try to compress a 70G file will it work ? or should i try to split it up or something ?

sorry i'm shitty with technology
